Amazing show, loved EBA and The Patient. Also what was that begging to Stinkfist? I thought I heard a good jam before the beginning of Rosetta Stoned, which ended up turning into Stinkfist. Correct me if I'm wrong here as my memory is a little shady..

was a good show not as great as the '07 shows I seen sommin missing but it occurs that way...part of it felt "lets just get through this.." all & all good show 5 glasses of wine 3 at the restaurant attached to the venue 2 during show. Was a nice relaxing evening. Acustics were good not the best but good. The opener deleck was fine not bad but not what you would thonk would open for'em very short set too. Just felt short the whole show for some reason maybe just wanted more someone said almost 2 hours....felt shorter....my first real experiance with ticket master will remember to just tell'em what I want in tickets if not go back to stubhub at least you can tell'em what you want & they get it for you.

wings for mary would have been nice & reflection.

kept me wanting more at the end totally tweeeking....

Wow, I'm really disappointed in my fellow Winnipeggers for these posts. JAL pretty much got the setlist right, but I didn't hear (-) Ions, I heard about thirty seconds of Lost Keys. Lateralus had a guest appearance from Dalek.

Place was pretty full - about 10,000 I'd say... and pretty well-behaved. Security caught a guy taking a picture in front of us and he was escorted from the building. Be warned! lol

Maynard was not very vocal last night, and I was hoping for something special since it was July 4 AND since Tool hadn't been to Winnipeg in 16 years. He said his typical intro, passed wine to the guys in Dalek, and high-fived the band at the end. He had some good energy for the last two songs but wasn't even rocking back and forth much.

The other guys were really on point tonight. One small technical difficulty when Danny's kit but otherwise I didn't catch anything musically off.

Having been at the last Winnipeg show in 1994, and at their B-Stage show at Lollapalooza in 93, and at an LA gig in 07, I'd say this ranked as #3 of 4. It was still unbelievably awesome, and much more complete and respectful than their last Winnipeg show. For those of you who don't know, they played three songs here in 1994 at a shitty little venue with a bunch of crowd-surfing loogans. Then Maynard said "fuck this" and they didn't come back for 16 years.

I totally get the "Maynard in the background" stuff, and the other musicians are truly amazing (I thought Danny and Adam were particularly into it at this show), but I hope post-new-album they give each of the four a little more equal spotlight time. Don't have to put the singer out front, just give him a spotlight once or twice in the gig.

Aenima was a standout for me, as was an up-tempo bit in Schism and the re-worked Intolerance. There were some noisy intro things that surely must find their way into a new album. Kind of a hint at the next album's sound - maybe a bit cleaner sounding and high-tech? Hmm.

Anybody know about the "California Republic Ghost Bear" artwork on the t-shirt? Never seen that before, so of course I had to get it.

Anyway a total feast for the senses and I can't wait for the next show!

It was at Le Rendezvous ... probably about 500 people there and it was at the height of grunge, so a lot of rowdiness. I think somebody jumped off a balcony, it was all mosh pit and I think maybe even a stage dive or two. Everything was awful about that show!

It was a fantastic show, and my first Tool experience. Being row 2 I was able to see Maynard the whole show and hear some of the things he was saying through his megaphone. Since probably no one else could hear him, he was talking about all kinds of unrelated things and was seen in the background playing with a few choice props a few times in the show. Maynard was definatly into the show last night. The other 3 played great and rarely missed a note, especially Justin who played his heart out and really interacted with the audience. I wish they had played a few different songs, like rosetta stoned, right in two, parabola, reflection, but it was a solid setlist that covered a lot of ground.

oh st. boniface area, wasn't that a more rap/hip-hop/dance-kinda social venue back then dunno though never really did the bar/club thing unless working.

surprizing they could of filled a bigger venue total blow show prolly...ya their not SNFU er sommin...I expect that at a punk show maybe a bit at a rock but off a balcony....dont wanna even feel responsible for what may have happen if show went on....kinda be the grown ups by that point "were out.." I seen stuff simialer at a mad season shows & their music also does not go hand & hand with that behaveier.....honestly a waste of a show for the person but to each their own.

Next time I want your seats. Could you see what technical problem Danny was having with his drums?

Had Maynard had such a dislike for Winnipeg i don't think he would have played here twice with APC since then. Apparently the same type of deal was rumored to have happened regarding RUSH and thank god they finally came back. I guess you can't blame them though. Seems like every show i go to now everyone seems to be more into the booze than the show and then you have jerk offs who annoy everyone else around them by getting up and leaving every two fucking seconds. What did you come to the show for!? Drunk fools.

I think a lot of bands refused to play the old barn (Winnipeg Arena) because of its acoustics and there was no economic motivation to do so, either. Now that we have the #5 venue in North America, we're seeing the bands we deserve to see and arrogant folks like Kanaduh will soon realize Winnipeg is a legit city. In fact, I was shocked at how few drunken/crazy/high idiots there were. I've seen worse. LA was much, much worse.

I heard that part of Lost Keys as well. I honestly thought one of the intro's was going to be new material they were going to debut....and then they moved into another song. But you could be right...maybe it was a little teaser of what's to come...

I think people should be used to Maynard not being in the spotlight at the shows. He prefers to do his thing in the dark shadows but he still grooves quite a bit. I've always liked his stance/posture and how he dances at times when he's singing or rockin out. I'd like to see him in the spotlight a little bit too, (i think everyone does) but i also understand that's not really his thing and not part of what he trying to portray. Justin probably shows the most energy on stage...he's always rockin out.

Agreed, i also can't wait for the next show. Hopefully the next show doesn't require that i have to head out to Minneapolis to see them though, but it's been done before...

Official attendance was 8500. That's pretty damn good i must say. At least they know they have the fans here...

Here's a link to a review by the Winnipeg Free Press which was given 5/5....

Maybe it's just where i happened to be sitting because i was sitting in the uppers (which turned out to be decent seats). There were only a few rowdies but like i mentioned...through the whole show there was always people getting up and leaving and coming back 10 minutes later and multiple times. I just don't understand why people pay to go to a show which you can basically consider a once in a lifetime opportunity at the rate Tool plays here and miss half the show to go for booze, smoke, or god knows what else.... we have no concert problems at the mts centre thats for sure...The albert and garrick still rocks too, as well as the burt...anyways......Amazing show, the sounds they create with only two guitarists is amazing. A few times Maynard was a little off on the lyrics but thats what makes a live show so great. Wish they would have played the Bill hicks intro for third eye but it was still great...The stinkfist bass line is the best you'll ever hear, lateralus was amazing, love that outro.....intolerance crazy good......aenema splendid..., i must say however the only way that a tool concert could be perfect is if they played prison sex and sober, maybe again one day!!! Cant wait for a new record, hopefully Puscifer comes to town too..
Amen

Yea, I hear you there. I was at Red Rocks night 2 and these dumbasses right in front of us let 4 of their buddies come stand with them. They clearly had no tickets for the section, and they spent the whole show talking like a couple of "hip gangster wanna be's". Leaving and coming back every couple of minutes, and too busy talking about what they had going on in their lives. It really pissed me off but I wasn't going to let it ruin the show. Idiots....

Ok I tried to post last night but it didn't work so here is my review:

First off the positives: The visuals were amazing, it is clear that Adam took extensive time to produce such amazing art and the lasers were spectacular.
- Danny, Justin and Adam sounded amazing, I have probably never herd a more heavy and powerful sound at the MTS and I've seen allot of shows there.
- the electronic jam in Lateralus was the highlight for me!

Now a little note on Maynard.... I have reached the conclusion, both from what I've herd in interviews and last nights shows that unfortunately the man has burned out. I don't know if it has been the continuous emotional toll which belting out the songs from Aenima, and Undertow through the mid 90's has taken or the whole wings for Marie thing.. but this was NOT the Maynard of the 90's or even the Lateralus tour. Gone was the energy, and most sadly the voice. He basically stood there... did not get into the music at all except for his drunken little arm movements which I really think were just the conceded antics of someone who knows that fans will love just seeing them show up and thinks that they can get away with putting in 50%…. As for the voice… the power is gone. If you don’t believe me just compare videos form this tour to past ones. I am really starting to think that Tool ( due to Maynard) is beginning to burn out and I say this with great sadness… maybe that’s why they are trying to cash in on $45 T shirts and $120 signed posters….but that’s another story.

Just one more rant, since most people probably think that I am a total dick already….
I know that Dalik wasn’t the best, but come on!!!! The first song into it I was hearing ignorant jock/ cock rock/ metalheads booing and saying “get him off the stage” and “what is this???”. It is morons like you that make artists like Tool look bad. Isn’t Tools main message one of being open to new experiences and exploring possibilities?, I mean I know it might not be your type of music ( and in fact it isn’t mine either) but you don’t have to be suck a disrespectful asshole just because you came to hear Sober, and The pot.

Regarding the whole Maynard thing....

While you are entitled to your opinion, i think you'll find yourself in the minority on that thought. If he was truly burnt out i don't think he would be actively involved in so many projects such as a new Tool album, new material for APC, Puscifer, plus his wine business. The guy is a workhorse, much like Trent Reznor.

I didn't show up for Dalek as i already knew i wouldn't be into them. Personally, i didn't think they added much to Lateralus and i would have preferred to hear Danny do his thing alone. This isn't really a major tour so i wasn't really expecting a great supporting act. Would have been nice to see ISIS play with them again as they are good friends of the band but just wrapped up their farewell tour.

I agree with you fully. I was there and I felt Maynard was well into the music. Just because he stays back for a good portion of the show doesn't mean he isn't into it. Best show I have ever seen and I will go and see them again.....

That's just a TOOL thing. He soaks up quite a bit of spotlight during the Puscifer shows. Just my 2 cents.....

I was at the show on Sunday. This was my second time seeing the band (the first being a few years prior in Calgary).

Regarding the whole Maynard thing. . well, I felt he was much more into the show towards the end (especially during Lateralus and Aenema) than he was at the beginning. I did notice that during the first few songs he was singing with the use of some device (which he had used when I saw Tool in Calgary as well) and that he was more or less just going through the motions of singing. He was very unanimated and actually sat down behind a speaker for an extended period of time while the guys played. He did not sing a good portion of Vicarious - and instead made hand movements that suggested he wanted the audience to sing it (which I found hilarious as you could barely see him, let alone these hand gestures). . I hate when musicians do that. I did think - like someone else suggested - that he must be burnt out from touring with Puscifer and that the band was doing a cash type of tour this summer.

But during the last songs he did get back into it and he did sing with a lot more conviction (at least I thought), so that was nice to see.

Despite the singing "problems (Maynard is still amazing, no matter what)", I thought the rest of the band was awesome. It was still a great show! I will definitely go see them again.

Oh! I also ended up with one of the tour posters (unsigned - I couldn't bare to part with the $120 asking price for the singed version); I am going to get it framed. Very cool.

*edited to add* I wanted to mention that after Aenema, Maynard literally left the stage and drove (was driven) away. . while the other guys were still on stage. I thought it was the strangest thing; does he always do this?? I couldn't believe it. Some guy behind me was screaming for another encore and I just had to laugh.

I flew in from Toronto for this show. I had the same impression about Maynard leaving the stage early before his bandmates -- very weird. But still kind of cool, right?

For me, what made it worth the price of admission was the music. I saw them last year at Toronto outdoor concert and this show sounded much better musically. I sat near Adam and soaked in every note.

Question: Are there in background vocals during the live shows? I thought I detected some during Schism.

As before, I left the show wanting more. They will never be able to satify a TOOL fan unless they extend their set to about 4 hours. ;-)

Maynard uses a pedal with a background vocal sample for a few different songs where there are vocal harmonies, like Jambi (dim my eyes, dim my eyes) & I think Schism (cold silence has...) too.

Since Maynard used to move around like most singers do, it would be great to find out why he now chooses to be at the back of the stage. One possible reason is so he is not a focal point of the performance but leaves that to the music and visuals.

I thought the show was fantastic and it was nice to not have to travel to see them. Has anyone else noticed that Maynard seems to be talking and screaming less and less during the shows? Seems to me when I saw him years back on the Aenima tour he really belted out the louder sections of Sober, Stinkfist, etc. now he doesn't seem to be doing that as much. In fact, the screaming portion of Vicarious was completely omitted in the Winnipeg show. I know they like to do things differently and that's cool but I kind of miss the contrast between his softer, more melodic areas and the times when he really belts it out.

Seems to me Tool is more of a brand name these days. The boys just trying to make as much money as they can before their time is up. The way she goes!
