I've wanted to post this for a while. Blend's thread kind of motivated me to finally do it...
I am going on the assumption that most of us (that are not participating) are growing tired of users holding multiple accounts. I have a solution that could be a nuisance for some, but could also prove to be an effective deterrent for such trollish behavior...
My husband's Tribes forum has it set up to where you have to be a member for 3 months to post anything in a forum that is not Tribes related...Maybe we could use this as an example...block newer users from posting in any of the 'socializing' forums, allowing them only to post in Spirituality and Philosophy or Tool related topics...I think it could work...
Wow! You expect that any new users want to participate into this forum? I mean, I have a better solution: STOP BEING SUCH A FUCKING DUMBASSSES! If people aren´t mature enough to obey some basic internet etiquette then don´t fucking bother.

If only it were that simple...
I was in no way suggesting that new users could not participate in relevant/enlightening discussion.
We've toyed with the idea of paying a small premium to participate in order to weed out stuff like that.
Something nominal, like $5 for life.
Adds some value to the memership and lessens your likihood to do anything that would get you banned. Your money would go toward vB licensing and server costs.

I love that idea! It would do much good for the forum I think. This has already been kinda said but if you guys started a fee, maybe allow people to read all the forums, but only post in the bin or only the bin and specific tool related areas. And if you haven't paid, you don't get an avatar or signature until you put down the cash.
PS Tribes ruled, long ago.

An asshole tax sounds like a good idea...I'd be down...maybe do like PBS and have different levels of membership. Except instead of crappy self help CDs you could get custom titles or somethin'...
BUT - I think new membership would suffer...If I were seeking out new forums and found that I had to pay to post I think I would take my insight elsewhere...besides the fact that even trolls hold jobs and could probably afford $5 a throw for screen names...Sure, the TDN treasury would be set, but we would still have the annoyance...and will have paid to have it at that…

p.s. I think all those Tribes boys are playing poker these days...I think TV might have been anti-climactic...
You'd lose a lot of people here if you put a charge on posting, and new registration would drop to zero. Probably a bad idea. You'd kill the forum.
I like grrrl's idea. Open only the Tool related forums to newly registered people, and only let certain people who have been with the boards for a while and have a decent amount of posts participate in the socialize section. That'd weed out most of the trolls and aliases.
Of course, then you'd end up with newbs flooding the Tool related sections with their own brand of 'socializing', which would make those places more irritating for the mods to have to clean up.
Maybe getting a few more mods on here would help out, or something. No offense or anything, but theres a only a couple of you who seem to ever really do anything productive for the board. I've seen plenty of people who have many known aliases stick around for weeks before getting banned, while others of us are put on probation for double posting and bullshit like that. Seems kind of lame.

This is pretty far from fact, honestly. A lot of the people who are here just to waste time would probably split, but the signal/noise ratio would go way up.

No it wouldn't. It would just force them to flood their trash into the sections they have access to.

We're working on that, actually. Any suggestions?

To be fair, "known" aliases are rarely known to me and, I suspect, to Dan. If any of you stumble upon a known alias that needs to be dealt with, say something. Don't expect us to be able to read minds.

Yeah, I don't really know what people would do. Personally, I don't know if I'd stick around. Not like anybody here would mind that. A lot of people would be really pissed off at you for a while, though. You'd get flamed to hell and back...

Yeah, I said this too.

What if you condence TDN down a lot? Theres are entire parts of the forums (like Videos) that nobody ever posts in. The only active sections seem to be Interact and the FARM, with a little bit of stuff happening in Creativity. Maybe you could put them all together more, making it easier for you guys to keep tabs on whats going on.
Either that or make some more people mods. I have a feeling that that'd end badly, though...

I've seen some mod or other actually say to someone (I think it was Pills) something like "You don't seem to be causing any trouble, so you can stick around." But yeah, I didn't really think you all would keep up with that.
Maybe we should work on deleting the internet. That'd fix it.
I'm sorry that I'm even posting this. I just now realized that you were only correcting the spelling. I thought you were saying, "well duh! it's masturbation! of course we have threads about it!".
Ummm anyways, I'm sure we will never have a pay to post method here. What would be ideal would just be, like other people have said, more mods. Just having a couple more around to clean up the trash would be great. But, most importantly, they really need to be fair.

Start charging and watch what will happen to this place. It will collapse. What will the money go towards anyway? server costs etc are next to nothing these days and to be honest I would not trust whoevers hands this money falls into. Most of the posters here are kids anyway who don't have access to credit cards, besides... we are in the navy, not the army.

Seriously though, Brightwell... think about adding a few more mods. Theres some of us who have absolutely no lives who are on pretty much every day for hours on end. If they had moderator powers they'd be able to clean up the crap you guys miss... so long as you can trust them to actually do it.
The more I think about charging, the more I think it's a bad idea. I would be happy to pay, but I am a long standing member. I think new membership would suffer too much.
We should assign a mod to each album, as well as the upcoming and unreleased section...

Does anybody really even care about the album section? And wouldn't that be making way too many new mods, especially considering how often people post in the album sections (aside from the FARM). Maybe one mod for the entire section, or something... but who would even want to mod it? I sure the hell wouldn't.
I think it'd work having two mods for each section of Interact (except maybe the drugs section; it doesn't get that much traffic), and two people for the Albums, Videos, and Creativity sections (since they get almost no activity).
I remember when I was still just a lurker here there was a poll with all the people who wanted to be mods (and had been accepted as candidates by the admins) where everyone could vote on who they wanted. Perhaps we should do something like that again.

I think that the album section is one of the easiest sections to mod actually. All you have to do is to watch that people dont fuck up a thread or something. It's quite easy b'cse the album section is the less used section of all at the moment.
When the new album comes out there will be alot of new Threads in that section, but that's quite easy to mod. 1) because most people are smart enough to share opinions about a song in 1 Thread. 2) After 6 months no one will actually care about it anymore.

Hah, I second that.

That has happened several times and it worked pretty well so far. Good idea.

If that is the only place new members can post, then it will become far more active...I would also like to re-reiterate the importance of leaving the S&P section open as well...
I really don't think blocking off "interact" from newbies will help anything. All the banned people on aliases and all the ignorant new people will just fuck it up. Its not really solving the problem, its just moving it.
Windir, what I meant when I said "Who would even want to mod the albums section" was who would want to because its so boring? I never check it, at all... and I highly doubt many of you do either. Aside from the FARM of course. Which is a shithole that needs about 5 mods of its own.
So, what would happen with the voting thing? A thread gets made to nominate people, and the ones the mods approve of end up in a poll?
What do the other mods and admins have to say about this whole thing, anyway? Brightwell's the only one whos responded so far...

Not a bad idea, but will stir a bunch of unneccesary outrage among some people.
How about this:
Instead of just letting people register with any old e-mail address, have people fill out an application of sorts to join up. Ask them how long they've been 'lurking', what their favorite forums and sub-forums are, what their favorite/least favorite Tool songs are(like in the profile). Wouldn't have to be anything lengthy, but enough effort and questions to make it more time consuming to register here. That way, maybe some of the people making aliases will either get sick of filling out a questionare/application, or just not get some percentage of their aliases approved for membership on the grounds that they gave short non-caring answers.
How's that? A combo of ideas from all different people could probably tune this idea up a little bit.
