Capsule review, Madame Butterfly, Santa Fe Opera June 28, 2010 (full dress rehearsal)

The singing, acting, set design and costumes all honored this great work of art. I felt a real sense of the cultural imperialism, exploitation and misunderstanding at the heart of the work. The show closed on a powerful, horrifying image: the child of Butterfly and Pinkerson holding the knife she killed herself with and and American flag as Pinkerson bursts into the room. SFO is always great, but this may have been a cut above normal.

I'm leaning towards a different setlist... Someone very close to the band told me a few days ago they were practising to change it up a bit.

I'm thinking one change as well. They sound checked Intension in its entirety followed by Right in Two. These would be a welcome swap for Vicarious and its intro.

Maynard sang his balls of on Intolerance. The best performance I have ever heard from him with Tool, APC or Puscifer. I was thoroughly impressed. I don't see that going anywhere. Ditto to Third Eye. Fucking owned. Probably not moving...which is great.

To me, Vicarious has worn its welcome and I don't see it in that set forever. It doesn't fit and isn't performed well in an otherwise pretty solid fucking set. Not that I'm complaining. Give me the summer 2010 set every day forever over summer 2009.

Heard that too but some of us waiting in line thought it might be a CD. Usually Maynard doesn't do the entire vocals for a sound check. I did hear Adam (or a guitar tech) riffing the into to RIT for a while but then the entire song played and it just seemed like the sound guys were f'in with us...

I'll be satisfied with one track different from last night. Two or more will be an absolute success! What a sick show last night though, barely made it in (Ticketmaster sent me 4 tix for the 6/29 show when i had bought them for the 6/28 show, so i considered it a miracle to trade those 4 tix straight up for 3 6/28 tickets at the very last minute), puffed with a dude from one of my favorite TV shows, and had a heavily tatted & pierced couple try to fight me for smoking next to their 10 year old kid. Why would you bring your kid to a TOOL show and why would you expect anyone to not smoke next to you?? Do you take him to the strip club and try to fight the strippers when they start taking their clothes off?? Luckily all that happened before they started playing

I could have left happy just hearing Third Eye and Intolerance.
