Re: General Tool tour questions / discussion (merged)
Ha! I couldn't imagine an entire arena being GA, but if that was the case, that'd be NUTS! Definitely funny to watch a video of it filling up in fast-motion.
As for variation in the setlists, my advice: Don't go to their show with ANY sort of expectation. I mean, expect it to be decent enough to wanna buy a ticket in the first place. Beyond that, however, just try to take in as much of it as possible and enjoy yourself. I'm normally a huge proponent of mixing up sets. In the last say, ten years or more, Pearl Jam (in those few hundred shows) has NEVER played the same set twice. The closest they'll come in a 72 show tour is having a mere two sets where the first 13 songs (out of 26) were the same, and in the same order. I just happen to be a fan of Tool's more 'latter' material (har har), so what they're doing doesn't really bother me. I'd still enjoy it if they mixed it up more. Their shows have nearly become "cookie cutter" in a way, but unlike a band like U2 (where they play almost the same show for entire tour, and where Bono has to involve a woman in the front row in the performance of "One" each and every time - same moves, same bullshit), Tool's shows are like this spiritual journey. That's how I see it anyway. I think the current order is actually very clever (FAR more poignant than say the end result of rearranging the tracks of Lateralus). At Tool shows I'll see people too busy drinking beers and talking about the band (well, usually just Maynard), and how they'd love to hear 4 Degrees, instead of just opening their minds to what is going on right before them. I realize it's all subjective, and some folks are just not gonna be into what their doing now. Personally I believe their newer stuff is simply more complex, takes more time or patience or energy or brain power, to really delve into. I for one feel I have been somehow rewarded for learning to appreciate their newer art. Sorry, totally babbling on here. What I'm saying here: I love Sweat and Opiate and Swamp Song and so on, but I'd STILL rather see - for the 6th time - them play Jambi again, for instance, as that song kicks SO MUCH ass in my book. Not to mention that spontaneity still remains within that same setlist, believe it or not. There are different things they do with a lot of parts of the songs, a bit differently each time. There's plenty of subtle shit each of 'em puts into all of the fills and transistions and preludes and breakdowns and bridges, etc.

Man, I'm presently listening to a recording of the Kelowna show. I feel really bad for the majority of the people who went there to enjoy some awesome music. It sounds like the rest, the mob, really got the best of... well, the mob. Apparently the drunk tank was FULL that night... 44 people were arrested. I'm sure a lot of that was pretty arbitrary too... those were probably the few that the cops were able to catch. Pretty distracting for the band too, trying to do their thing whilst people are literally getting crushed by the Pit Of Insanity. So much incessant indiscriminate screaming too.
And to think that people feel that ganja is somehow a problem.
I'm just glad I went to Saskatoon, where everyone was chill.

Time for more Tool!
Are you gonna give a play-by-play?

Nah, enjoy the show, man. The set list will be the same today. I hope you are going to San Fran though as there are some relatively credible rumors of a set list change-up.

Wish I could've made SF. Oh well- wil definitely be there for the last Vegas show.
Trans Am is on now. Not terrible and I have always been a sucker for fuzz bass.
Re: General Tool tour questions / discussion (merged)
sonnyboy! Wish I could join you again at the Pearl, man what a venue. You should've hauled your ass up here for the SF show, I almost got veikley to fly his lazy ass out here for it.

Hey brutha! Yes, SF would have been epic! Just got out of LA show so go check my review in the 'reviews' section.
No Vegas for you or Veikley this time? Damn! Still, good to hear from you and have fun tomorrow night!
Re: General Tool tour questions / discussion (merged)
just out of curiousity, for those of you who have attended both shows on this "mini tour" and shows this summer (any of em) how do they compare? Are the new shows better? Worse? The same (by looking at the set lists they seem to be all the same as the shows this summer) or what? band in better spirits atleast?

Fuck you know I would have gone to Vegas, but school got in the way. Though if the show had been exactly 1 month later it would have landed exactly on my 21st birthday...mm what a present.
I know you sand every word to the songs, can't hide the truth old man; even caught you in vegas doing that. Must be a teenage girl inside.

LAS VEGAS POSTERS:
Go to www.gigposters.com and type in Tool and you'll see both Las Vegas posters that were created by printmafia. They look awesome. One is JESUS and the other is MARY. These will look great in frames on the concert wall.
Re: General Tool tour questions / discussion (merged)
To anyone going to the Las Vegas shows...we are meeting at The Island Bar in The Palms. Some people from Toolarmy are going to The Lounge but last time Tool played The Pearl the party was at The Island Bar.
Re: General Tool tour questions / discussion (merged)
Since someone thought it wise to close the "Dec 05 Portland, OR Memorial Coliseum" thread, I will post here and maybe a mod will move this post there.
I'm surprised no one has mentioned when the drummer from TU left the stage it was a bit unexpected. ( I didn't watch TU's bassist leave, but he was already gone when I saw the drummer leave)
Danny literally stopped drumming in the middle of the solo for about 1/2 second, stood up and looked like he had to restrain himself from running to see why he took off. But he quickly sat back down and didn't miss a beat.
The Maynard said something along the lines of "Was it something I said?", or "Is someone upset"?. (It was hard to hear Maynard)
I know when Maynard introduced them, he only mentioned King Crimson.
But then after the song Maynard said they were members of TU and the "ongoing" project King Crimson.

48 HOURS UNTIL THE PEARL!!!
So what's the deal with getting these posters? They were sold out instantly last night. How do you get one?
Also, what the hell do you do with it to keep it safe and flat during the concert?
Re: General Tool tour questions / discussion (merged)
Spoke to the Pearl on Monday. They said there will be no opening act. And I am guessing if doors open at 8, they will go on around 845 or 9pm. The LA, SF, and Vegas posters look awesome!!!

From the LA show reviews:

The live show is becoming a contradiction to the essence of the live Tool experience. With so many rigid technical factors in place, the live show has evolved into a mechanical handicap to the ultra-expressive quality of Tool’s art. This video needs to play here. This laser needs to shine there, at this moment. The fog needs to start here, and end here. The purple lights need to play on this song. And so on. It’s all computerized, meticulously rehearsed, and, well, sorta canned.
----
I would’ve liked to see Tool take a page from their own book and put it to use. Apply it to 2007. If the lasers and videos and fog machines are making things a little too creatively limiting, THEN THEY’VE OFFICIALLY BECOME A PROBLEM. It’s gotten to the point where the icing is controlling the cake. Time to lose the lasers and the video footage and fog machines. At least for a while. Try turning ‘em off for thirty minutes in the middle of the set, light some candles, and just fucking JAM. See what happens.
I'm going to have to disagree with most of the conclusions in this assessment.
I've stated it before, and will put it back out there again: the setlist is in no way dictated by the production aspects (lights, video, lasers).
The band are free to play any songs in any order, but are currently choosing to play these songs in this order. For whatever reason, they seem to like the flow of this setlist.
There is nothing rigid about "this needs to happen here and this is going to happen now", but as long as they play the same setlist, those things will happen in the same order.
The only "rigid" production aspect, as was decided early in the "10,000 Days" tour, is that there would be a progression to the production, building from kinda ordinary at the start to a visual assault at the end. That's it. Whatever songs they play, even if in the reverse order, it's going to start small and end big.
If the setlist changes, then lighting, video, and lasers will change. GLADLY.
Things are going to happen at certain moments in songs. There's no point in having random laser moments or video clips that don't go with a song. Anyone can do that.
The lighting, video, and lasers are all performed by humans every night just as the music is. The option is there to make changes and even mistakes, but once you find something that works well you don't just change it unless you think of something new that is better.
As for "meticulously rehearsed", I don't know when this massive rehearsal took place, but I wasn't there and neither was anyone on the tour. More thought was put into this tour than any other Tool tour, but not by that big of a margin, and it certainly wouldn't qualify as "meticulously rehearsed".
I think very few people would be satisfied with Tool lighting some candles and jamming for a half hour. That's just not what they are about.
Re: General Tool tour questions / discussion (merged)
im happy with anything they do, they are obviously doing the show for a reason the way they are. i think its all in the way they want us to take the experiance home, they always said use them as a stepping stone or whatever, certain songs have certain messages and the overall show has a message, take what you will out of it but the songs are powerfull.
the lighting and lasers i think are a cool addition to the experiance, its all well thought out planned to a T, they are perfectionists* in there work.
they are just stepping up there game like they have been every album and every tour. what more can you ask for but for them to keep pushing and doing the best they can to make it a killer show.
Re: General Tool tour questions / discussion (merged)
@junior:
I can't disagree that lighting some candles and jamming, say, Triad, would stoke only a few of us. But last I heard, Tool wasn't about appealing to the masses. Besides, I'd think you'd love it. And to be clear, jamming isn't necessarily directionless and without structure. It's about exploring the spontaneous, where the artists democratically find their way together into something that works beautifully. A jam is a celebration of the present moment, not a phoned in recital of something preconceived. Nothing makes you feel more alive than being present during a good jam. Part of it becomes yours, and you take it home with you. And that is indeed what Tool is about.
We live in an information age. YouTube and this site are good examples of that. When I go to a Tool show and everybody knows what the next song is gonna be, I find it uneventful and anticlimactic. Boring. Completely void of surprise, which the device that makes any live experience interesting. In both art and life itself.
It's hard to imagine the band not getting bored up there after months of the same shiz. And, thinking back to Monday night, they looked it.
