[QUOTE=FistFck]listen to the tales and romanticize,
how we follow the path of the hero
boast about the day when the rivers overun
how we'LL RISE to the height of our halo

listen to the tales as we all rationalize
our way into the arms of a savior,
FAILING all the trials and the tribulations,
none of us have actually been there,
not like you,

ignorant fibbers/(FLAGRANTS?) in the congregation,
gather around spewing sympathy,
spare me,
none of them can even hold a candle up to you
blinded by choices hippocrites wont seek,

but enough about the COLLECTIVE JUDAS,
who could deny you were the one WHO ILLUMINATED YOUR LITTLE PIECE
OF THE DIVINE

this little light of mine, it gives your past unto me,
ill let it shine,
to guide you safely on your way,
your way home

ohh, what are they going to do when the lights go down
without you guide them home to zion

what are they going to do when the rivers overrun
other than tremble incessantly,

HIGH IS THE WAY BUT OUR EYES ARE UPON THE GROUND

YOU ARE THE LIGHT AND THE WAY THEY'LL ONLY READ ABOUT

i only pray HEAVEN knows when to lift you out?

10000 days in the fire is long enough, your going home.

your the only one who can hold your head up high,
shake your fist at the gates saying,
"i have come home now,
fetch me the spirit, the son, and the father
tell them their pillar of faith has ascended. its time now, my time now,
give me my, give me my, wings"

give me my x5
give me my wings

heyyyyyyyyyhooooooooooooooooooooo
You are the light and the way, they'll only read about

SET AS I AM IN MY WAYS AND MY ARROGANCE,
BURDEN OF PROOF TOSSED UPON NON-BELIEVERS

you were my witness,
my eyes, my evidence,
judith marie, unconditional one

daylight dims, leaving cold flouresence, difficult to see you in this light,
please forgive this, bold suggestion, should you see your maker's face tonight,
look em in the eye, look em in the eye, and tell them, i never lived a lie, never took a life, but surely saved one, hallelujah, its time for you to bring me home.

i think that clears up a few lines

Such an amazing and intense song. As long as we're still discussing lyrics, this is what I get when I listen to it. Just a few minor tweaks here and there to add to what most of you already have:

Listen to the tales and romanticize
How we follow the path of the hero.
Boast about the day when the rivers overrun,
How we rise to the height of our halo.
Listen to the tales as we all rationalize
Our way into the arms of the savior,
Feigning all the trials and the tribulations.
None of us have actually been there--
Not like you.

Ignorant fibbers in the congregation,
Gather around spewing sympathy.
Spare me.
None of them can even hold a candle up to you.
Blinded by choices, hypocrites won't see.

But enough about the collect of Judas.
Who could deny you were the one who illuminated
Your little piece of the divine?
This little light of mine, the gift you passed on to me;
I'll let it shine to guide you safely on your way,
Your way home...

Oh, what are they going to do when the lights go down
Without you to guide them all to Zion?
What are they going to do when the rivers overrun
Other than tremble incessantly?
High as a wave, but I'll rise on up off the ground.
You are the light and the way they'll only read about.
I only pray God knows when to lift you out.
Ten thousand days in the fire is long enough, you're going home.

You're the only one who can hold your head up high,
Shake your fists at the gates saying:
"I have come home now!
Fetch me the spirit, the son, and the father
Tell them their pillar of faith has ascended.
It's time now, my time now
Give me my, give me my wings!"

Give me my, give me my wings!

You are the light and way that they will only read about.

Set as I am in my ways and my arrogance,
Burden of proof tossed upon the believers.
You were my witness, my eyes, my evidence,
Judith Marie, unconditional one.

Daylight dims leaving cold fluorescence.
Difficult to see you in this light.
Please forgive this bold suggestion:
Should you see your Maker's face tonight,
Look Him in the eye, look Him in the eye, and tell Him:
"I never lived a lie, never took a life, but surely saved one.
Hallelujah, it's time for you to bring me home."

"ignorant siblings in the congregation"

I haven't had the opportunity to read through this thread, so forgive me if it has been mentioned, but with regards to the line "But surely saved one," both in Wings pt.1 and 2.

I always heard it as "Would surely save one." that is, I never lived a lie, never took a life, and I would surely save one. To me this makes more sense, and seems to fit more than the "but surely save one" that I keep seeing.

I'm pretty sure it's not

Set as I am in my ways and my arrogance
Burning all through, tossed upon the believers
You were my witness, my eyes, my evidence,
Judith Marie, unconditional one

but rather,

Set as I am in my ways and my arrogance
Burden of proof tossed upon the believers
You were my witness, my eyes, my evidence,
Judith Marie, unconditional one

As in, "I don't believe in God because there's no proof, but you were close enough to divinity for me."

The first version doesn't really make any sense, and he pretty clearly articulates a /p/ in that line. At least in my ears.

just a joke, my friend. :)

i've just noticed that non-american people always seem to come up with the weirdest transcriptions of the lyrics.. i attribute it to different accents, which cause people to think of words in different ways.. of course i think everyone's entitled to their interpretations, but some of the ones people from other countries come up with do make me laugh..

btw sorry if this post is a bit incoherent.. i've been drinking glenfiddich and guinness tonight.. an aussie friend of mine warned me not to combine the irish and scottish, lest i recreate australia in my stomach.. ^_^

It works, but I just cant hear it. I had actually thought about this originally, but I just cant hear 2 syllables. I have also considered "Mum" (or Mom for your Yanks) but it doesnt work for me either.

Either way, I dont think anyone will ever agree on any of this stuff. The lyrics should probably pulled down and this thread deleted...it is going nowhere. We have most of them, but I think the rest we will all have to agree to disagree about, and wait till we find out from the man himself, who doesnt want this stuff taken literally anyway.

tossed upon non-believers

Maynard is an atheist and is referring to the fact that he always had to justify his views to others.

Maynard's an atheist? I thought he was just agnostic. Anyhoo, either way, traditionally speaking, the burden of proof lies with those making the claim. So whether you're claiming God exists, or claiming he doesn't - either way the burden of proof lies with you, so it could go either way.

That's logically speaking.

Audibly speaking, it could go either way too :)

EDIT: Come to think of it, logically it would have to be the believers. Whether you believe God exists, or believe he doesn't, it's those who 'believe' with whom the burden of proof lies. People who don't believe don't have to prove anything.

Does anybody else think Maynard says "Unconditional love"? I think it's certainly a possibility. It kind of sounds like he says that.

I'm hearing:

Feeding on the trials and the tribulations

Rather than "fading/failing." I think he's referring to the congregation relating stories of her pain and struggle for their own catharsis.

Yeah, I guess we're getting overly picky now. The bulk of it is right, anyways.

daylight dims, leaving cold flouresence, difficult to see you in this light,
please forgive this, bold suggestion, should you see your maker's face tonight,
look em in the eye, look em in the eye, and tell them, i never lived a lie, never took a life, but surely saved one, hallelujah, its time for you to bring me home.

Definitely one of the most moving passages in the whole album

So speechless.

I think these lines

[would have made it, / illuminated]
You'll have a piece of the divine.

are actually:

[enabled me to]
your little piece of the divine

That's what I've always heard anyway, maybe I'm crazy.

as beautiful as this song is, i stay totally 100% involved and connected...up until he says her name. I think it's honestly only because i never knew the woman, i'm sure she was wonderful i just wish it didn't pull me out. I'm not sure if that's just me though...if it is um...sorry for wasting space?

"Ignorant flippants in the congregation gather 'round spewing sympathy"

flippant defined as showing inappropriate levity

levity defined as an inappropriate lack of seriousness

I figured this one was a no-brainer

High as a wave, but I'll rise on up off the ground.
You [are / were] the light and the way, they'll only read about.
I only pray, [Heaven / God] knows when to lift you out.

I think it goes
High is the way, but our eyes are upon the ground
You are the light and the way they'll only read about
I only pray heaven knows when to lift you out

That's logically speaking.

Audibly speaking, it could go either way too :)

burden of proof tossed upon non-believers
you were my witness, my eyes, my evidence

the burden of proof lies with maynard, as a non-believer, to prove god doesn't exist, his mother is his evidence, that answer is in the lyrics to APC's Judith

You're such an inspiration for the ways that I will never ever choose to be
Oh so many ways for me to show you how your savior has abandoned you
FUCK YOUR "GOD", your "lord", your "christ"
HE DID THIS took all you had and
LEFT YOU THIS WAY still you pray, never stray
NEVER TASTE OF THE FRUIT never thought to question why

It's not like you killed someone
it's not like you drove the hateful spear into his side
Praise for one who left you broken down and paralyzed
He did it all for YOU

So the premise of the song is.. if God exists, then Judith Marie better be sporting some wings right now

Wings For Marie (Pt 1)
10,000 Days (Wings Pt 2)

I dunno, maybe it's you, are you familiar with APC's "Judith"? Makes this song even more powerful when you can hear his passion come full circle on this subject. Kinda adds more to Vicarious as a lead-off track, as if in his admittal that he needs to "watch things die", a song later he let's us all into his life vicariously. Worked for me anyway.. I get choked up over it, and now moreso when I hear Judith

I suppose you could rename it "Wings For [enter name of personal connection that recently passed away] (Pt 1) if you are too detatched or are feeling left out.

hey everybody. please indulge me, if you will. I appreciate all the hard work everyone has put in, trying to figure out the lyrics to all these songs. Personally, myself - I wouldn't even attempt at touching "Rosetta Stoned" w/a 10.5 ft. pole. Anyhoo a very critical lyric, in mine eyes is:
"10,000 days in the fire is long enough, you're going home".
I beg you all to listen to the song again preferably w/headphones.
The lyric is actually:
"10,000 days and the fire has woken up, you're going home" This to me, makes more sense and compliments the song "Intension" very well. Of course Maynard could post the official lyrics and all of us would look like dumbasses when we find out the lyric is:
"10,000 days and the fire has melted my ice cream, your going to get me another cone"
There are alot of factors to consider when discifering Tool lyrics:
1) Maynard has a tendancy to mutter some of his words and the way he sings makes it hard sometimes(think along the lines of how Tori Amos can make one word sound like 7)
2) There are multiple layered vocal tracks
3) Maynards lyrics are beautiful, unconventional and he uses big words(sometimes). To stupid people this is more confusing and easier words will be chosen in place of these multi-syllabled words.
4) one word: echo
Even Maynard has a limited vocabulary....I can think of at least 4 different songs that have some form of "compromise" in them, Tool/APC. "vampire" comes up a few times. There are some other discrepencies I keep seeing in this song like "Ignorant fibbers in the congregation"
-does anyone realize that "fibbers" is not a word, correct me if I'm wrong here. Now
"Ignorant(ce) fills within the congregation" makes a little more sense. The "10,000 days" line is like a zit waiting to be popped for me, this set of lyrics. This set of lyrics is what made me appreciate the song so much more. I've even seen myspace names changed to this "10,000 days in the fire is long enough" lyric. So i ask of you all to use good judgement when trying to figure lyrics out. Look at the context of the song. Songs like "The Pot" and "Rosetta Stoned" are highly irregular so I can see the conflagarations. thanks for reading this.

- peace

- peace

and your interpretation of the 10000 days line is laughable. the current (and otherwise undisputed) interpretation makes total sense in the context of THIS song.. changing the lyrics so they make sense in the context of another song is just willfully dim-witted.

Agreed on all counts, this is what I hear when I listen to this song. And it makes the most sense this way.

I think we have it accept for one line and that is "ignorant ? within the congregation." I've read flippant, fibbers (so goddamn wrong), flip, flit, siblings. I agree with tyrith. There is definitely a "within" in there. I keep thinking it might be fled as in people who were not so close to her mingling in the crowd away from Maynard and family because they don't know what to say. I'm good with every line but this one. Anyone sure of this line?
