I love the fact that he has taken advantage of a fretless bass and mastered it perfectly.
I myself am an avid tool fan and guitarist, and I too enjoy trying to play the bass lines of their songs(42 & 6,Schism,Reflection...etc) but as to these bass-lines....God-Damn!
It will take me a good few months before i have nailed the guitar, let alone justin's bass work. Long live TOOL!!

Yes. I've been playing bass in and out of bands for over a decade, and have been a "fan" of the instrument for a long time. My favorite players are Steve Harris of Iron Maiden, Joe Lally of Fugazi, and Cliff Burton of Metallica (R.I.P.) To me, Justin has joined this group of creative, original and phenomenal bass players.
He blows me away with his choice of bass lines, his tones, and his ability to create sounds beyond the normal spectrum of the instrument.
I think with 10K, he has grown and improved by leaps and bounds. He is now matched with any of the greats in rock and beyond.
Without Justin, this album would have a hard time sounding good.

after more and more listens i have to say that justins bass playing on 10kd he is tearing up and throwing down some of the most badass riffs to date for him imo. his whole style and approach is show cased on this one. the riffs hes laying down with use of more effects and solo stuff for him is just amazing me everytime i listen. if there's anything lacking on this album and there is, but it isn't any of what justin has done.

I´m definately with you on this. He´s a really, really good bass player. And his sound is magnificently good also. I got to check out those Wal basses sometime ;)

Seems we are all in unison on this one - Justin is the fucking MAN on this album. I always thought he was good but fuck me if he hasn't lifted his game. The others have always been brilliant in my eyes and stay pretty much on a level for this album but Justin has risen to being the best bassist that I can remember, he kicks ass. And yeah, awesome live - I would kill to talk to him about what effects he uses to get that sound. At Download my chest cavity felt like it was going to implode. He rocks. I want so much to learn to play these basslines but don't think I'll come anywhere close until I seriously improve my technique. The guy's a bass legend and has taken over previous favourites in my eyes.

Justin and TOOL actually use the bass as an instrument, not just an afterthought to buttress the drums. Justin's style stands out as much as Danny's does. He's an amazing artist, and a key component to the TOOL sound. I love his work on Intension, among many, many others. This guy is just great.

i agree, this is definitely justin's best bass effort to date. i can't wait to hear what he comes up with on the next cd since so far he's made pretty major leaps and bounds between albums.

Ive played some live tool cover's a few times and something that makes the bass sound like tool, is turning off all the mids on your amp and bass and boosting the treble and low end as high as they will go on the amp and bass.
It gives it that muddy yet punchy sound that makes the bass stand out so much.

When he kicks in at the start of the Pot it makes me grin so big. Yeah, his riff towards the end of 10,000 days, ah fuck it all of it. Cheers for the bass advice Zarathustra, gonna try that out in my next rehearsal! God I love Justin. Those Wal basses he plays are beautiful too.

I think one of my all time favorite bass moments in this album is around 8 minutes into 10K days, when he starts spewing out that crazy riff in 5/4 with Danny while Maynard and Adam play in 4/4.
Oh and all of The Pot. And Jambi. And the whole album.

I love pretty much everything Justin has done. As others have said, it's amazing when a band uses the bass as an actual instrument, and not just a punch to the guitar line. Bass can be amazingly versitile if used to it's capabilities.
The things that stand out most to me on 10k Days though would be:
- The dual-layered part in jambi is fantastic.
- His tone in the beginning of Wings for Marie gives me shivers.
- The 10K Days once the bass really kicks in.
- The Pot naturally
- Though it's in the background a lot, he has some amazing work in Rosetta Stoned
- Intension is pretty spectacular
- Right in Two there are multiple points where he shines.

God no. Turning off your Mids makes you sound like Fieldy from KoRn x_x
If anything I've turned my mids up when playing Tool. I suppose it may depend on your bass of choice, but turning down mids is never a good idea for bass IMO. Turning the treble up is a good place to start for Tool, but not too much. Most of Justin's signature sound comes from the Wal basses. They have an incredibly punchy midrage which is why the bass cuts right through the mix.

The main effects he uses are.
Chorus (and or flanger). Most notably in Sober, 46&2, etc.
Whammy. Near the end of Lateralus, Intro to Eulogy, interlude in Schism.
Delay. The Grudge, Jambi, Rosetta Stoned
Distortion
According to Wiki a few more, but these are the main ones.
He also said in Bass Player that for 10K days he switched his amplified to a Gallien Krueger. I believe he said he was still using the Mesa speakers though.

God I love Justin C. He MAKES TOOL as much as Danny or any of the band members. He doesn't get enough credit for the TOOL sound. I mean when you hear TOOL, the first thing you notice is that bass. Justin is one of a kind. That guy can play. **I know...Fan boy loving ** Sorry**.

Hats off to Justin on this album. He has proved that he is probably the best bassist in rock on this album. Each and every bassline on this album is original, many different from the guitar lines, and they never get boring.
To name a couple of places where he shines:
10,000 days (everything in the song is outstanding.)
Jambi (that really cool bit a minute in)
The pot Bassline kicks my ass

Hats off to Justin no doubt. Adding to your little list I wanted to point another exceptional segment:
Rosetta Stoned@07:06 || Justin and Careys respective performances beautifully merge together in that segment. The bass is just KILLER. And then Jones kicks in with his chanting sound-effectish guitar. It's just so... Tool.

Justin Chancellor is good, but he doesn't slap or pop,its a special pedal that gives him that edge.

Justin is the one who really drives this CD - he is just wailin' the bass on every track. Yeah, Adam is also killin' it, but I think this one belongs to Justin.

It's hard to tell who is driving it. You could make a case for why any of them are driving the album, but face it, you need them all for it to work, so I'd say they all are driving it together.

before the album was release the band kept saying that adam is way more in front on this one and while that is true, he still can't hold anything to justin and danny.

Adam is definitely the driving force, melodically speaking. Justin & Danny do more than justice to their roles as rhythm managers... they obviously excel at it. Excel is an understatement... But still, Adam is the frontman. It's been that delicate balance between Adam's melody management and J&D rhythm management that makes the songs so enjoyable. I don't think it would be as cool if somehow the first sound layer was dominated by Justin or Danny... you know what I mean?

I used someone's Gallien Krueger on my band's gig last week. Fuck it sounded good. This week I had to use my own Trace Elliot -which has a huge sound, but I can't get those sparkling highs that I could out of the Gallien Krueger.

Justin plays a big part in this album. A lot of the time he is the melody maker while Adam holds down the rhythmic groove. In those parts they effectively reverse the traditional roles of guitarist and bassist. It is true that Adam is usually still in the forefront of the sound when he takes on that rhythm section role, but this adds to the power of the role reversal.
