That's not the reason I like Tool though, I like them for the way they put music together, I like their song structures, they're out of the normal. I get sick of listening to songs that are verse, chorus, verse, chorus, bridge, chorus etc. It's refreshing to get music that's unexpected.
Tool is creative, not many bands put as much effort and thought into their music as Tool. It may not be that hard to learn their songs, per se, but actually writing those songs and fitting them together, takes a lot of thought and band cooperation. I'm pretty sure most people that have been in a band themselves, know that sometimes it can be frustrating when trying to write a song because of bandmate disagreements and it doesn't always come out the way you might want it. I'm sure Tool has disagreements, but most of their songs feel like they come together pretty damn good.

agreed. It brings to mind a quote from wayne static in a guitar magazine. "I don't play to impress guitar geeks. I play what sounds good." I think anyone who plays specifically to impress with their ability is insanely egotistical, and nullifies any artistic merit. Besides... too much technique totally kills a song... its why I can't listen to Dream Theater (although I acknowledge they are a badass band, and they are badass at playing their instruments... it doesn't appeal to me artistically.)
I can shred like Tom Morello, but it doesn't even show through my music... it may one day when its appropriate... but even Tom tends to be a little too unnecessarily flashy at times.
I hope the day comes where people come to appreciate artistic value in music, rather than something that "Thumps" or "Shreds". But that would starve a lot of leeches in the biz... God forbid that.

Yes indeed. The technique should always serve the song, not vice versa.
This thread has become the guitarskills-version of overanalysing Tool.

Sorry, but fuck you, fuck you, FUCK YOU! What a little self-ego-stroking little twat you are! I've read a lot of your statements that riled me up, props I guess, but this beats all, you are a liar. No one who has NEVER played bass learns the entire Lateralus album in 2 fucking days. Wow, this is the true apex of arrogance and immaturity. You are like the kid everyone knew in junior high always bragging about getting into fights and kicking ass all the time but just never had witnesses.
Is there anyone who knows jack shit about music besides Rivek on this thread?? If so, please explain from a completely technical standpoint how that is the most full-of-shit comment you've ever heard in your life. If by 'playing along' you mean hitting a "d" note and pressing on the 3rd and 5th fret every now and then, just STFU. Anyone can do that. And if you think that is all there is to this Tool song then you truly need to have your ears checked. That or take a test at your local human services department and see if you can get governmental aid for being mentally retarded.
I just can't let ignorant statements like that go unviolated. Especially considering 90% percent of the population has never had college level music courses and just might take you seriously. What next Rivek? Did you learn "Voodoo Child" by Jimi Hendrix within an hour of picking up a fender strat for the first time? :)

Never say never. I have friends who can ear Van Halen, Tool, Alice in Chains, etc. and play near perfect the first time. Tool's music isn't as complex as other bands that exist. I'm not saying their music is bad, but it's not super complicated to play.
Also, I sense some sarcasm in Rivek's post.

Yeah, I can now see what may be sarcasm. I just find it odd how Tool went from being really crazy almost technically impossible to replicate music to run-of-the-mill just plain easy to play music in people's eyes. Sorry for busting on you so hard Riv. It's just not nice to belittle someone's musical ability, especially if you've never heard them play.

By playing along, I mean I played what Justin was playing, near as I could tell. I checked my transcriptions against Tooltabs' transcription the next week and I was about 85% accurate, and where I wasn't completely dead on (disposition being a major bitch, for one) I was enharmonically accurate.
And doing nothing but random D-string fuckery for a whole album is not bass playing; we both know that.
lol. You really are pretty dumb, aren't you?
I think the reason that this pisses you off so much is because you don't have the drive to do such a thing.
Copying other people's music doesn't take talent. All it takes is a sense of pitch and the motivation to figure shit out. You people act like I said I knew how to shred like Vai after five minutes or something. Grow up, use your head, hell, try something like this some time and see how far you get.
