The Structure

It is obvious that the grudge is about letting go

It is letting go and entering oblivion

For what purpose?

It doesn't matter at this point. We can have no true purpose until we let go of the supposed truths that we now think that we know.

We know very, very little about this world. This song points out that the first step in understanding reality/yourself is to let go of what you think you know, otherwise we will get dragged down again into the endless loop of misconceptions and false gods.

Humans communicate through symbols and through shared experiences. Research the symbolic nature of the writer's words, and you will find an answer. Not "the" answer, because that doesn't exist anymore. You will find an answer that is trying to find you. That is clear, from the posts thus far on this forum that everyone has a different answer, based on different research, based on different experiences, based on....Notice a pattern?

The very act of attempting to find meaning within the words of the grudge, is defeating the meaning of the grudge. Granted, one has to attempt to look into the song to figure this out. But the point is just to embrace the ocean of chaos that surrounds us and fall in love with it. It teaches us not to "base" anything, but to "embrace" everything.

ReMember too, that this is the first song on an album that describes certain truths, so this is the opening up song. Let go, let go, let go, let go, let go, let go, let go, let go, let go, let go, let go, let go, let go, let go, let go...

I see the repetition of "Let go" as Tool getting you ready to digest the rest of Lateralus. Obviously, they are telling you to let go of your grudge in the context of the song, but in the context of the album, they are telling you to let go of your old ideas so your mind can be a clean slate, objective and fertile, before you take in the rest of the ideas on Lateralus.
