"Don't look at me like I am a monster." Monster: An imaginary creature that combines various animal or human forms having a frightening appearance. "Part vampire--part warrior--carnivore--and voyeur." With one face he frowns out to an impersonal and hostile world and with the other stares like a zombie into the T.V.. With no hope in humanity or good-will he is thrilled by the tragedies of others and finds it fun to watch things die, so much that he actually needs to watch things die. But don't look at him like he's a monster! He is not a monster. He experiences life vicariously through death on T.V.. He stares like a junkie and a zombie, vacant and soulless. He's already dead inside, but doesn't know it. Living vicariously is merely a substitute. What life he does have he owes to the T.V.. What if the first line is, "I owe the T.V. 'cause tragedy thrills me?" Actually, he dies while the whole world lives. Let the flamming begin!

Actually "I owe" could work, being that we are so indifferent to violence because of so much television.
Kind of like a "Thanks to the t.v. , I'm now....."
... but it's probably "eye on"

Think of it like this: If there is any possible "I" I think this interpretation is the real one. Because of the "me". It just sounds so much better with an "I". It hasn't got to be that, but in this very case, it just sounds better. And it makes more sense for me. And I hear that. I definately hear an "oh" sound.

I won't do any flamming here. I'll leave that to the practice pad and kit. On an unrelated note, the lyrics actually are: "Aye yawning t.b." which means, in the context of the song, that a sailor is bored with his tuberculosis. Makes as much sense. Alternatively, it may also be "Aye on the t.v." meaning "I say yes to television" (in Australian). He says yes because tragedy thrills him. Even more sense.
Eye on the t.v.

I'm seperated on "Eye on..." and "I own..."
They both fit, but I have more of a liking towards "Eye on..." because it would be stupid in my opinion if Maynard (a guy that we see that is very enlightened) and very much so against television and evils of that nature succumb to it without any second thought and say that he owns it just for some lazy time away from music, the vineyard, and the such. It gives away at the this whole character that he's built over the years of questioning things, and bettering yourself. It kind of negates the feeling and message that Tool's music portrays as well, as if to say in the end even though we've dug deep, and freed ourselves and changed, and enlightened, such a small piece such as the television could overcome all that changing and expanding. It becomes a bit dry in the end if you look at it that way, because that first line sets the path for the entire song, and without it, it still stands but not in the same context.

or Texas Hold 'EM,
Spit in the Ocean,
WHatever it wants,
CUz I can't win....
no matter the odds...
(I can go on...no?...alright..)
Well I don't think those are the lyrics.

eye on is probably right, but i owe completely works... i think because of these resulting small unknowns that promote discussion and interpretation that Tool decides to post lyrics way later than the album release.

I agree with terry on this one. maynard difinatly makes the "w" sound, especially live. also it doesnt make sence saying "eye on the tv 'cuz tragedy thrills me". gramatically the first part of the sentence has to be a complete sentence and "eye on the tv" isnt a complete sentence.

No offense, but you can't invalidate people's ideas as to what Maynard's lyrics are, or anyone else's for that matter, based on whether those lyrics are grammatically correct. The examples are too numerous to cite, but here's a few:
From Vicarious: "Much better you than I" - no verb, "Part vampire, part warrior, carnivore and voyeur" - no explanation necessary
From Jambi: "But, I . . . I would . . . if I could" etc.
Wings/10,000 Days: "Ignorant fibbers in the congregation"
The list goes on.
Anyway, everyone knows it's "Ione the t.v." Maynard named his tv "Ione".

I think it's "High on the T.V..". It makes sense at least.

"I own".
I cropped the section of the song and slowed it down using Audacity and the sound is deffinately an "oh" sound rahter than an "ah" sound (which would be the case of "I on"). It DEFFINATELY isn't I "OWE" the TV because there is a clear and distinct "N" sound, plus the notable pause between OWN and THE. And, "I owe" just doesn't make any sense in the context. The song is speaking sarcastically in the POV of a zombie-like citizen, and he's trying to answer the question, "why do you own the TV?" He responds: "I own the TV, cuz tragedy thrills me".

I agree...I never even considered "I owe"
My question was/is, is it "Eye on" or "I own"....when I'm singing along, I go with "Eye on"...
