I think we can all agree that Tool has there own distinctive sound. However, people have to see some similarities.
1. Isis
2. 10 Years
3. Chevelle

How are Tool similar to bands that came after them? Surely it's those bands being similar to Tool?
I think Tool are most similar to King Crimson, Rush and Rage Against The Machine

i wouldnt say led zeppelin of floyd either.
i was thinking as far as the actual sound of the music. not the context of the band. they sound nothing like tool.
you could just say any big prog band, like thr mars volta, primus, dream theater, radiohead, rush etc. none of which have a tool sound.
i think king crimson's the power of belief, has a tool vibe running around in it though.

I don't think KMFDM does... King Crimson, Rush and Pink Floyd but really I don't think anything sounds like Tool.

"How are Tool similar to bands that came after them? Surely it's those bands being similar to Tool?"
Since this is a Tool message board, I'm not going to ask what bands are similar to Chevelle and 10 Years. I'm only saying that their sound is similar (likely because they were inspired by Tool). I definately should have listed Neurosis. Completely forgot about them.

Earshot is a band that is inspired by Tool and definitely mimics their sounds pretty well. Their singer sounds surprisingly like MJK, but they still aren't nearly as good...

discipline (album) - king crimson.
some vocals in floyd's welcome to the machine remind me of the apogee in schism.
close to the edge (first half)- yes, reminds me of the hard part at the end of lateralus
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KNJJPEN-bp0 starting at 3:33,...only reminds me of that part in lateralus, i'm not saying tool sound like yes the band. beware of the video, they some fugly people and the sound quality sux.

Yep. Cog are one of my favorite bands. Their early EP's sound quite Toolish. But The New Normal is generally more commercial sounding.
Anyone who wants to check them out should go to their website, click music, scroll down and listen to "1010011010" and "Stretch". Tell me what you think.

I think that generally speaking the album is less progressive. But then again, Doors and Naming The Elephant and the most progressive tracks Cog have ever made. But My Enemy and Run are far more mainstream sounding.

Tool admires and may have been inspired as we know by bands such as King Crimson, Yes, Rush, etc..
But there is nothing similar between King Crimson and Tool..this is stated but Robert Frip himself

A lot of people think Earshot sounds like tool, but I don't hear it. Their music is nothing alike. The singer has a very melodic, excellent voice in the same vein as maynard's, but the only people who would think they sound alike are the people who think Raine Maida and Billy Corgan sound alike.
the only band doing anything even moderately similar music-wise is mudvayne, and only at times. No one else manages to insinuate polyrhythms in everything they do, play in odd time signatures (and not have it sound contrived), and still run the gambit from soft and pretty to hard and heavy.
as far as influences, you can hear Meshuggah the whole way through 10000 days.

Maybe so, but they don't sound like Tool to me. They have just taken the same texture and combined it with more straight foward, less progressive music. Limp Bizkit and System Of A Down have also listed Tool as a band that infuenced their music. But to me the only thing they have in common with Tool is the texture - the sound of the guitars.

Portal sounds a hell of a lot like Tool - not the Australian black metal Portal. A different noname band. http://cdbaby.com/cd/portal3
One of their songs has a riff that sounds exactly like the one in the slow part of schism.

i dunno....i wouldn't label primus as prog...the closest to a prog album primus made would probably have to be pork soda. the entire album is dark and has the strange feel to it.
Primus music in my opinion can go hand in hand with tool. Both bands are practically brother and sister. Primus being the more humorus one and tool is content with the poker faces. Musically both bands do have times where they can pass off as one another. Two great great bands. I'D BUY THAT FOR A DOLLAR

id like to se maynard pass of as lez... or the other way around
to be honest i personally dont think they are similar at all. well no, there are similarities... but theres also similaritys between tool and system of a down... doesnt mean the bands are too alike.
maybe its because i simply cant see tool doing anything remotely like, oh i dont know, golden boy, or cammel back cinima...

I think Tool are most similar to King Crimson, Rush and Rage Against The Machine

OSI
Indukti
Dead Soul Tribe
eh, I guess those are the most obvious tool knock-offs in prog rock/metal. They have the same tension/release builds and climaxes, odd-time signatures, downtuned guitars, etc. The only one I like somewhat is Indukti, for being largely instrumental and having a violin player.

What about the Deftones? I think they're probably one of my other favorite bands. They don't always sound the same but I think their music structure and rather cryptic subject matter at times brings Tool to mind
