I was just listening to Tool's live cover of 'Demon Cleaner" by Kyuss, and noticed something. The final verse usually goes like this:

Maynard, being the little rascal that he is, amended the final line to be 'Satan is the way."

Not all that unusual, considering Maynard's ongoing joke of making the band look Satanic (see Die Eier Von Satan, The Gaping Lotus Experience for further evidence) or his tendency to change the lyrics of songs he covers, either for serious reasons (see Tool's alternate lyrics for "No Quarter") or comical (APC fans will not Maynard frequently used to randomly substitute in the word "Josh"--referring to Josh Freese--when the band did their cover of The Cure's "Lovesong"). It's also very much in Maynard's flavor of humor.

Probably not new. I'm just starting to get into Kyuss, and having decided to check out Tool's cover again (makes sense why they'd cover it; Maynard and John Garcia's voices sound remarkably similar on that song), I noticed that little gem.

So, what's your question? :) Kyuss was a fantastic band if you ask me, so good thing you're starting to listen to them. Blues for the red sun my personal favorite, kind of concept album I guess (music-wise). Just a useless post.

I just got into them and got 3 of their albums, Blues for the red sun, Sky valley, and circus leaves town, which were all three very good. blues is very good, but my first one was asn the circus leaves town and that one kinda grew on me. Very good albums. along with anything else any combination of those band members have since made.

I don't recall asking a question anywhere; it was just an observation.

I don't think it has ever been a joke. I've seen a pentagram (JUST a pentagram) above Dannys kit in a picture from the studio in the Undertow days. I believe at one time they were Satanic (or Humanist), although sadly many don't know what that actually means. I'm sure they've evolved to a larger philosophy since though.

Well, a pentagram doesn't mean satanism. As a matter fact, the pentagram's origins aren't even of an evil influence, it has along the years somehow became a symbol for it when that was never originally intended.

Satanism does not equal evil. The pentagram has NEVER symbolised evil, and anyone who thinks that is a complete fucking moron and needs to crack a book before swallowing far fetched urban myths. The right side up Pentagram (Pentacle) is weaved through many Pagan theologies, as well as the occult... but the upside down pentagram is more exclusively Satanism. Pick up the satanic bible some time and read it... its actually a very good philosophy.

I'm familiar with the Pentagram's non-Satanic nature and its connection to Aphrodite. I didn't feel the need to comment on something I already know while I'm being blasted for seemingly no reason.

That pentagram on Danny's kit is a reference to sacred geometry, I believe.
As their music does tend toward and revolve around "sacred geometry" concepts. The shapes, the patterns, fibonacci sequences, the golden ratio etc. The pentagram being an inseparable symbol of that school of mathematics.

As a few of you have pointed out, the satanic thing is totally relative at this point. Although the only serious ties there with the band are with Crowley.

But yes, definitely mostly it's just a humerous notion that the band has incorporated into their music. And goes along with their theme of thinking outside the box, creating deeper metaphores, double/triple meanings, and not taking things at first glance.

More or less those examples given are references to "heavy metal" bands, or any musical act associated with a heavier sound, not singing purely sappy major scale melodic love songs, and using the occasional profanity, and darker lyrics, being "Satanic", and an extension of the devil himself!

Such as playing Rolling Stones and Beatles albums backwards and hearing horrific "Satanic" messages, causing the kids to go out and commit mass murder like Charles Manson.
The Gaping Lotus Experience, Die Eir Von Satan (my aunt who is 55 actually really deveolped a taste for the band after hearing this one and GETTING THE JOKE), and then there are the backwards lyrics on Intension that actually say something like, "listen to your parents, stay in school".

It's just a clever joke. And a metaphore for encouraging one to "think for themself and question authority". In my humble opinion.

By the by - best I can tell, yes, it's all a joke, a crack at heavy metal music and their incessant use of Satan and how it's overdone. After all, they are about "think for yourself," etc.

Also fun to note - a pentagram is also an orthographic projection of a pentachoron, the simplest of 4-polytopes (polychorons, 4D figures, whatever you want to call them), which has five tetrahedral cells. There is a pentagram behind Danny careys kit, I THOUGHT it was satanic, but the symbols on each point seem to be different... maybe it falls in line with what Schema was saying.

But Satanism is all about thinking for yourself. Its about accepting your inner desires and human nature rather than rejecting it.

On an unrelated note (regarding that studio video of the creation of Undertow), I'm of the opinion that they should have kept Henry Rollins Screaming "Deead inside"... I thought it sounded cool.
