It was stated that it would be heavier than the pervious album.
Vicarious, Jambi, and Rosetta Stoned are heavier than most of the songs in Lateralus.

Plenty of songs on Lateralus are heavy in the same way that those songs are. If I were to listen to the albums side-by-side, I wouldn't think "wow, 10,000 Days is defintely heavier than Lateralus."

It's heavy, it has heavy songs. It's as heavy as any other Tool album. I don't care about a Tool album being heavy. No point debating that since it's irrelevant.

Go back to the movie Back to the Future when Micheal J Fox said, "Man this is heavy." And Doc. Brown responeded, "What, is there something wrong with the Earth's gravinaltational pull in the future." Heavy might have a different meaning than what you would think.

And what about Danny being "busier than ever" on drums? His drumming on the previous two albums was much more prominent. Bottom line: don't believe previews.

The heavier comment came from one of the band members (Adam?) didn't it? I'll have to go dig through the threads to find the quote again.

maybe they meant some of the subjects are heavier...like wings/10,000 days.
but I dont really believe that either. Maybe they just lied...
as far as the drums being busier...what absolute bullshit.

Hmm, I don't know. Lateralus had it's fair share of heaviness. I think this one was way too hyped in terms of heaviness, not that it matters. It's an awesome album.

nah, the heaviness wouldn't really matter to me. But, if it's being started that its heavier then I don't see it. Like someone else said, I wouldn't listen to lateralus and then to 10000days and say this is heavier...
but it doesn't matter.

It's a different kind of heavy. The lyrics are a lot more direct, as is the majority of the music. The album as a whole puts me in mind of Undertow, tonally at least. Adam's guitar-playing is a mix of Undertow and Aenima, and Danny is over-playing less, whilst Justin seems to be hammering the bass a lot more than usual.
Maynard's overall performance is awesome, IMO - dynamic, emotive and melodic as hell.

Maybe they meant the term more literally, like along the lines of "the subject material on this album is far weightier than that of Lateralus"
Let's face it, Lateralus was pretty much all airy-fairy stuff about transcendance and spirituality. Not that that's a bad thing by far; Lateralus is probably my favorite song ever, but the subject material on 10,000 Days is largely Media, war, death and fear...

Its quite heavy, the guitar is extremely loud, the drums in songs like Vicarious and Jambi are very Meshuggah like.most of the other songs sound quite heavy.
In conclusion. Heavy

I don't care either way, either. Music doesn't have to be "heavy" to be good. Go listen to Mahler 6, 7 and 9 to hear some awesome music that isn't what most people would consider 'heavy'.
All I care is that the music is good, and that it is.
