photos from my trip

Rather than bombing "the photo of the day thread" with a bunch of travel pics, i will make this separate with my thoughts on each place i've visited this past 7 weeks, kinda like a photo blog. It was a no rest, sightseeing trip.
Ill start with China.
China is a mental and emotional roller coaster. A mindfuck. On one hand you'll have very excited chinese folks throwing theirs kids in front of you to get their picture taken with you, people are very very happy to be able to speak with you and are very appreciative of your presence and you can't help but marvel at the charm of China and it's people. On the other hand you hate the goddamn place. I laughed alot in China and cursed alot.

Re: photos from my trip

This is Bifengxia panda breeding reserve, three hours from Chengdu in Panda bamboo country. Not really visited much by foreigners. We paid a "donation" to play with the cubs. It was a pain in the ass getting there, there is virtually no english anywhere but we got by..by drawing pictures of bus's etc on paper, and forget using a english mandarin dictionary, they're useless. Another crazy place with crazy chinese tourists who i swear to god were more excited to see us than the damn pandas.

This is the Army of 8000 human size Terracotta warriors in Xian. Pretty cool thing to see. A farmer was digging for a well and he came across these guys buried. Apparently they were made for a megalomaniac emperor so he would have an army with him In the afterlife. China likes to call it the 8th world wonder, i beg to differ, if you don't have the time to make your way out to xian, than don't feel bad that you've missed it.

Re: photos from my trip

Cambodia was refreshing coming from the pollution and craziness of china, it's a very friendly country, and although the people do hassle you to buy souvenirs and shit it's a little different than other countries in the way that alot of them don't take themselves too seriously and laugh about they're attempts at getting you to buy something. Very friendly, all the kids love waving. It was also the hottest country i've been too, drinking water all day and never pissing cuz you sweat it out is something i've never experienced.
This picture was taken at one of the smaller temples near the huge angkor wat temple and was my favourite, it had an ancient jungle indiana jones feel to it.

Re: photos from my trip

We left the heat of cambodia and headed to the very expensive maldivian islands just under sri lanka. Some people say beach-wise this is the most beautiful place in the world, competing with bora bora in the french polynesian islands. What alot of people aren't aware of though, is the Exuma keys, which i think is up there with maldives, i'm not sure why no one knows much about the exuma keys but it's an alternative to the expensive resorts of the maldives and bora bora. And it's also very close to florida.

A pic of a heron just waiting for some fish. The one thing that the maldives has over the exuma keys and bora bora, is the world class diving and snorkelling. I don't dive but i snorkelled the entire time there and i got up close but not really personal with a big red octopus, giant moray eels, all kinds of fish, big Porcupine fish, titan triggerfish, and spotted eagle rays.

Not much goin on in the maldives, at the fancy restaurant with posh guests, I stuck some green beans up in my gums and cucumbers for eyes and did the ace ventura thing, but you know i really should've done it to the waiter rather than my girlfriend, i regret that now,you only live once.

We originally were gonna head over to india from the maldives but cambodia was a great reference of what to expect in regards to heat, and ain't no way we were gonna go through that. So we opted to see jordan, a country i missed out on a few years ago when i was in egypt, and i've always wanted to see Petra. And here it is...the entrance to The Treasury.

Re: photos from my trip

"Have a break..have a kit kat!"........is what i heard alot from the vendors in jordan, attempting to lure you into their shop....or some jordanian on a poor looking donkey riding up to you asking.." taxi sir?". The men love cat-calling my girlfriend and using cheesy pick-up lines, even a fat 12 year old couldn't hold back his "oooooooh yessssssssss" at the sight of my girlfriend. At first the cat-calling was harmless and cute, like really how could my manhood and pride be threatened by a man on a donkey? but eventually i blew up at a vendor and blew up at a couple guys on some horses. My gf was pissed at me for losing my temper and about an hour later she totally fuckin blew up at some dudes hitting a dog in the face with a stick. Here's a camel.

Re: photos from my trip

Alright, so my opinion on jordan is this:

It's sad what religion has done to people. You don't feel the full effect of what religion does to the human mind untill you've visited a country dominated by it. It's in their blood, it's kept them emotionally and mentally out of the 21st century. My ex-gf's mother is a full blown christian but this is a different animal. This is dangerous. You hear and see on the news about people blowing themselves up, but it just seems so far away, like in a movie. The air of the effect of religion creeped me out, it boggled my mind, there is something truly insane about it. But what boggled my mind the most was that it still exists in these times. I will never go to a islam-dominated country again, it's too fucked up. As nice as the people may seem, there's a reason they have problems and it's religion, the whole aenima booklet quote " beliefs are dangerous, beliefs allow the mind to stop functioning" took on a whole new meaning when i visited this country. And this country is the most stable of them.

I sat down one evening to do some zen meditation and i heard some loud pops within the yells of what seemed like a confrontation. I wondered if they were gunshots. I went outside on the balcony and there was a jordanian dude also on the balcony having a smoke wondering what was going on.I looked downhill and seen a crowd of people outside a hotel at the bottom of the hill, a man walked out and sprayed the side of the building with a machine gun. Everyone in the crowd fleed. The jordanian dude grabbed me and pushed me inside our hotel for safety. It turns out it was tribal warfare between different tribes of the desert, kinda like gang activity. The police didn't interfere and let them work their shit out. For a couple of hours it went on, a full day later i was still a bit jumpy at hearing any kind of bangs. How people(americans, canadians)go and fight in a war is beyond me, i would never ever be wired for that shit. When your in a third world country you naturally feel vulnerable, everyone does, especially if your not in a tour group, your far far from home and home is where the heart is. So add some gunshots to that equation and everything you love at home, you love a whole lot more. Cliche' but it's true. The next day i looked at my girlfriend and said "fuck this place, let's go to japan"

Re: photos from my trip

And 24 hours after leaving gunshots in jordan, we were lost in Tokyo. We walked straight into a japanese style gay parade that was just getting started. 24 hours before i witnessed extremely homophobic jordanians trying to kill each other, and now i was witnessing gay transgender and bi-sexuals laughing and hugging each other, holding up signs of "Peace". It was one of the best days of my life.

Re: photos from my trip

I read a thread on here recommending countries and one guy(stupidcunt i believe)simply said "nothing in europe holds a candle to Japan, best country ever". In the ten days i spent in japan, it was all pretty much in Tokyo. I just felt no reason to leave tokyo, there is so much to explore in tokyo itself. So it's hard to say if it's the best country since i've spent it only in Tokyo. But Japan IS fuckin awesome. The most respectful people i've ever met, cashiers at mcdonalds bow to you in greeting and bow to you in thankfulness. I actually seen a foreigner hippy dude asking some police officers where he can get some bud, he was trying to convince them of the benefits of marijuana...i didn't see how the rest went. The coolest city i've been to. One goth store in tokyo has more variety in products than all of canada. But that's not what makes tokyo cool, it is the people. Like this guy:

Re: photos from my trip

Last but not least...a japanese restaurant we attended where the waiters are trained monkeys. By japan law they are only allowed to work 2 hours a day. I told my gf i was taking her to a very fancy restaurant and that it would be romantic. hee....hee...hee...little does she know. fuck anyways it turned out to be a very weird night. There was some australians there and they came to the same conclusion. Just weird. It was a small joint, pretty much just a house...family run, and not many people.....and for the most part alot of people had a "wtf" face on throughout it. I mean...the monkey dresses up at one point as the owners wife in a mask, wig and dress and knows how to do an obscene pussy slapping dance under "red light district" type lights. Where the fuck am i? Everyone felt the same way.

Thanks, I have a Canon 7D right now. Which I like but I'm gonna be trying to upgrade to something that has better ISO performance soon. Not a fan of the noise. But it's decent enough for the wildlife stuff.

You've got a lot of really nice compositions going on here.

Most likely flying into Hong Kong, spending a week wandering around S China (girlfriend's parents live in Zhuhai), then heading up to Beijing for another week or so.

Cool. The Hutongs in beijing is the oldest part of beijing. We stayed here. It made me truly feel like i was in what id imagine china to be. So if u happen to visit, please keep an eye open for Mr.Yang...a 200 year old chinese cat......ask him for advice on any area of your life and he'll tell u, as long as your respectful.
