Junior...I know you can't really ever give too much away... but is this epicenter festival the one (and only) CA show? or can i spare my ears of hearing linkin park and hold out for a solo show?

Hasn't Junior said a bunch of times that there is only a one-off show in SoCal in late august left? And already shot down (pretty much) all other venues? That, along with the post from Blair about being only one off the beaten "track" SoCal show and their being a racetrack at this venue, 2 + 2 = 4?
I'm all for a stand-alone show at a better venue, don't get me wrong, but I'm not taking chances. Also, if you buy your ticket using the presale code, you get them out the door for just over $80, so even if there is the off chance that they somehow magically get a stand-alone date elsewhere, you shouldn't have a problem recooping your cost, since after saturday they'll go up to more like $90+ after fees on ticketmaster. That's my plan anyway. Looking forward to seeing AIC and Tom Morello as well.

Also, with so many bands TBA, this could be a really incredible lineup. Tool and AIC are a goddamn solid foundation for a festival, but I think the little bands really make or break a lineup, and since this is being marketed as a "rock" festival, there could be a pretty amazing array of bands.

A new festival, dubbed Epicenter, will debut this August in Pamona, CA. The fest will be held Saturday, August 22 at Fairplex in Pomona with Tool, Linkin Park, Alice In Chains, Wolfmother, Atmosphere, Hollywood Undead, Atreyu, Street Sweeper Social Club, Aesop Rock, Sonny and others TBA.
The music festival will feature 12 acts throughout the day on multiple stages, with music set to kick off at 12 noon.
Hats-off to organizers for hosting a hard-rock concert during the peak-heat of summer in inland California. Temperatures should be ridiculously hot, good thinking guys!

No wonder they switched to playing small venues for the latest dates.
They are probably releasing tickets as time passes. Happens all the time. I got 4th row for one show two weeks before. Relax- Tool are still popular as ever. Shiat doesn't matter of course. In fact, I've never really completely understood their massive popularity. Murky, plodding grooves. Lyrics that are dark, slightly pretentious and overly personal. Odd time signatures and visuals. Extremely unconventional shows and off-kilter performances by the band members themselves (Adam just stands there and stares, Maynard stands at the back with no spotlight, for example). Don't get me wrong, I don't think of myself as some "uber" fan. And this really is not directed at the folks here. But Tool's massive popularity at this point is a tad unusual.
I guess I am waiting for Ian Faith's explanation to start applying to my fave musical group, "The band's appeal is becoming more selective"

On a side note- my company hired Jerry Cantrell's side project, Camp Freddy, to play at our annual Christmas party a few years back. Terri Nunn from Berlin sang Man In The Box with Jerry filling in for Layne's part during the verses and Terri nailing the chorus. I was pretty much in heaven between the music, free booze, and dynamite looking girls, including Carmen Electra roaming around in some tight, nuthin outfit. :)
Holy smokes what a party! Billy Duffy was in Camp Freddie or just Navarro?
I've seen the "new" AIC three times. One was "ok" one was "good" and one slayed me to the bone (a 2.5 hour show with an acoustic set.)
I'm a huge Layne fan and I really like Cantrell, not sure they should call it Alice in Chains though...
"Yeah Tool is fucking amazing. But there’s a big chunk of their fan base that think they’ve become thought provoking geniuses just from listening to them."

Billy wasn't there, but Dave was (hence the Carmen Elektra sighting). He really is a very good player. Steve Jones from the Sex Pistols showed up and they did Anarchy For The UK (my own band in another life had ex-Steve Jones band members so I had met Jonesy a few times). Whathisface from Sugar Ray came out to sing that one. I had heard my company thought they were selling to someone so they pulled out all the stops thinking this was the last big party ever. Didn't happen and we're bigger than ever now. That was a great party. It was about 400 people total. I also remember a farking rocking sushi bar built on ice blocks with first rate sushi chefs. Oh, and I remember the bartender knew exactly how to make a proper "dirty" martini. :)

I'll be the first to ask, Sonny, who the FUCK do you work for? :)
Re: General Tool tour questions / discussion (merged)
Not to rile as I'm content with a Pomona barge, but Blair didn't specifically say these are the LAST dates of the tour, but we all know what's been going down here for the past two months so I wouldn't expect anything else people.
Re: General Tool tour questions / discussion (merged)
I wonder if they had to agree to hold out on a stand alone LA show to ensure people actually buy tickets to this Pomona what-have-you? Pomona, heat, Linkin Park fans, Pomona people...jesus. I have, however, been listening to a shit ton of AIC lately...Facelift kills it, but I'm guessing they will use the slot to play new shit with this Duvall dude. Hmmmmm.

There is still a gap from Lolla (Aug 8) to Ponoma (Aug 22) Which leaves the possibility for something in between ...Geographically and chronologically ....Kansas City ? Tulsa ? Saturday August 15 sounds pretty good. COME ON!!!!!

Based on what we know, I'd say that we now have the entire tour finalized.
Don't expect any more shows from what has already been announced.
Re: General Tool tour questions / discussion (merged)
This has been one of the weirdest tours that I can remember - from planning to announcements to venues - for a major band like Tool. Standing on a race track in Pomona in August is going to be hell on earth. The venue in New England left a lot of people who wanted to see them play out of luck. Kingston, Ontario? Toronto has a booking at a major ampitheater, but no other city? 2 shows in Ontario? A 4K seater in Cincy? Salt Lake City was booked in a larger venue than the Dallas and New England areas?
The festival dates obviously pay the most, but what was the reasoning behind some of these other bookings? Are these venues cheaper? Did they not want to oversaturate the bigger markets? If that is true, then are they planning on returning soon?

Has there been any discussion about FNM opening for Tool? Other than pure conjecture based on the recent artwork that Adam has done for an overseas FNM tour poster?

Actually those rumors started before that artwork showed up. Seeing the Isis artwork Adam did and knowing they've played together as well probably added to that. BTW, anyone SFers catch Isis @ the Great American a few nights back?
If they did play together, do you really think FNM would open though? They could be considered a bigger band simply by scale (current draw + record sales) and the fact they haven't played in forever, not how much we all love TOOL and think they should headline. I'm thinking (please excuse this terrible example) of how Metallica jumped onto the SF Rolling Stones show date only because they live here and simply wanted to be a part of it. I seriously feel like they fucking PAID to open for the Stones so they could associate themselves with them. Anyway...We know there's a Patton connection, plus the FNM bassist played with Adam on stage in Biafra 5-0 for Jello's 50th birthday. The connections are definitely there....

I don't know, at this point.
We are working out the logistics of how much of the production can/will be our own stuff on the festivals this week. We're hoping for the best (much like Bonnaroo was in 2007).
Set lengths will hopefully be similar to standalone shows, but I don't have that info.

To each their own, of course.
They've always been good at the high energy/involve the crowd style of show, and there's nothing wrong with that.
As for being technically sound and translating well into a live setting, I would suggest that the (roughly) 16 tracks of ProTools playback help with that quite a bit. At least that's how it was 5 years ago.

This is possibly going to be one of the best shows/venues/intimate setting of the entire tour.
I think the original plan was to do a Montreal (or at least Quebec) show, but it didn't work out for a few reasons.
My guess is that Kingston was chosen partially because it is pretty far east in Ontario, which puts it closer to Quebec.

As far as I know, this is the only California show, and the only West Coast show.

I'm pretty sure Junior already said that it was definitely NOT FNM. As much as I would love it. To the other point, I don't think that in 2009 FNM would be anywhere near the popularity of Tool. Anyone else agree?

Odd choices.
Yeah almost everything about this tour is "unorthodox" Tool style, at least from Lateralus on anyway. For them to do a tour this large after 2 years of HEAVY touring after 10,000 days release is a nice treat. So take what you can get. Ill be driving 5 hours from Boise to SLC to see them and it will be worth every penny in gas. Got great seats head on with the stage. Woulda went with floor, but the last 3 times Ive seen them was on the floor, so I really wanted to just sit back extremely stoned and enjoy the show.
Junior: I know you've been asked this a bunch, but will the visuals be similar compared to those used towards the end of the 10,000 Days tour? If you cant disclose that info, its all good. Im just curious because the visuals at the December 2007 Idaho Center show were top fuckin' notch and Im kinda sad I didnt get to see them from a far. But it was nice being right under the laser "clouds" during Wings. That was a very nice touch :)

Haha, you make a good point. Admittedly, I have very limited knowledge of acoustics and sonic engineering. I guess to my untrained ear I was surprised at how well they sounded. But, I did see them a year ago, so maybe things have changed in terms of their overall sound quality improving.

Playback as in playing to a recording through the monitors ala metronome, samples like NIN, or actually being part of the music coming out of the house speakers? I can't say I've ever listened closely to Linking Park to notice layering. (Disclosure: What the hell is a Linkin' Park?) FUCK! I need to go buy Dream Theater's new album! Paired with Mark Sanford, DT lyrics could really make this a high-larious day!
Re: General Tool tour questions / discussion (merged)
re: epicenter. it says 12 bands on 2 stages. they already announced 10, so only 2 are TBA. and hopefully Linkin Park will be playing on the other stage at the same time as Tool. one can dream...
