Is this similar to a "soundboard" recording. i.e. a patch taken directly from the soundboard mix and not recorded from the audience?

similar, but not identical. what the musicians hear in their monitors will generally be different from the mix the crowd is hearing. Danny wants to hear himself and Justin, not so much Maynard, Maynard only wants to hear himself, etc.

From what I read on here, I've pieced together the theory that it belonged to a drum tech or something. Pretty sure Junior said that Maynard is the only member of the band to use an IEM, and in my mind, it doesn't make sense for Maynard's mix to be drum/bass heavy. Who knows.

That wasn't a surprise. I believe that was a known scenario going in to the tour.
The clock was a bigger factor this time around. There were some long drives that caused later load-ins. Having 3 bands is somewhat unusual on a Tool tour, also. That required earlier doors, which also shortened the afternoons a little. Primus had their own video screens, which added a little time to setup. They had inflatable mushrooms at the first show, or 2, and they stopped setting those up because of time issues.

hey junior, was this (at least in your opinion or presumption) a driving factor of the lack of setlist variety? i am not complaining and was very happy with the set (if i went to 5 shows maybe I would have a slightly different view). just moreso curious as to how time and planning may play into the setlist variety (or lack thereof). I was a bit surprised with the only swap out being sweat/vicarious. i know from earlier commentary that the tour came together very quickly, and wasn't something that had been planned for a while, that may impact it as well (less rehearsal time). back in 14 and 12 there was a little more variability. felt like 09 again, late 07 ;)

You'd have to ask Maynard, but I don't think that was a factor.
As far as I can tell, they get a list that they like and stick with it (more or less) on these short tours. I think if it was a longer (regular) tour, they would probably get restless and switch it up more. It's really hard to say since they haven't done a "regular" length tour in about 8-9 years.

Two puscifer tours (one in us, one in Europe) between now and maynards harvest suggest songwriting is not near enough to completion to hit the studio and do all the necessary steps that involve the release of an album before the year is out.

BAHAHAHAHA!!! Everyone's freaking out about this album and TOOL be like:
"How about we sell out a 2 month tour, but not the chilly states and we don't want to deal with customs. Maybe we'll show some love to the die-hards and do a VIP thing for an extra chunk of change. Well, then we'll need a while for vacation, and then my schedule is a tad busy for a while. But, then, MAYBE THEN we'll start to continue to begin finishing some of the concept recording processes and writing… calculation… phenomena. Maybe movie? Who knows… should be an exciting year though."
Thats entertainment, folks! I wonder if people would've let Tool fade away after 10,000 Days to do what they do, if they wouldn't have had something sooner.

is the Puscifer festival thing a one-off? or more euro shows coming?
I also don't think they will do any non-festival shows. it's probably too expensive to bring their stage approach/stuff over the pond.

I guess the assumption is there will be more europe shows announced. Seems reasonable to me, anyway.

doubt they'd fly over there for just one gig. in one of the many articles/interviews the mention of doing an overseas tour was purely limited by funds given how puscifer is marketed, homegrown, and without major label cashola. probably helps tossing in VIP passes to state-side shows to fill the coffers enough to head across the pond.
regarding moving their stage show overseas, it can't really be that bad in terms of shipping gear over. really, even with the wrestling ring it's not like they've got a complex gear setup to ship. i'm not in the roadie biz so maybe that's an incorrect assumption but it seems like the puscifer equipment load is really pretty light weight, all things considered.

If we're going to start a setlist discussion again around here, then I gotta posit the one song they should add next time out is Right In Two. Sure, I want to see Prison Sex, Jimmy, and Eulogy as much as anyone. But it's probably not happening. Right In Two though? Why not?

yes, please. I'm pretty sure that is the one song I have not seen performed live.

considering they've brought back Hooker, Ticks, Grudge and No Quarter, i don't think Eulogy is out of the question.

hello guys. i'm sorry to bring a negative note to this thread for a little while, but this forum in a sense is almost like a second family to me.
last sunday my father died. he had been gone for a few days and i found his body. words are pretty incomprehensible to describe how the past week has been for me.
making things more challenging is that i haven't spoken to him since christmas. not a phone call. not a visit. i was always "too busy". he had no friends or communication, and there's no doubt he was thinking about me in his final days.
it's going to be 4-6 months before we know what happened. they did an autopsy. i highly doubt it was medical related. he was depressed and had addiction issues.
i'm sitting here, absolutely balling my eyes out, with the new song Descending playing on repeat. what i wouldn't give to take back those pensacola and NOLA shows and trip to instead visit or even just call my dad.
sorry. some of the people i respect the most are on these forums and I just had to get this out. the funeral is tomorrow and I am trying to write a eulogy. all of my friends and family are amazed at how "strong" and "mature" i've been dealing with this. i've put up a nice facade this week,, but tonight it's all crashing down. this fucking sucks.
i know things will get better. but jesus fucking christ - this is going to haunt me for years.
sorry again. i will probably delete this eventually. just had to get this off my chest to somewhere that might let me feel just a little bit better.

I'm very sorry to hear that Kanaduh. I lost my father 4 years ago. I hadn't heard from my dad in a few days and I kept calling him and leaving messages for him. I couldn't walk at the time because I had just had a back fusion surgery and sent my friend to check on him. My friend found my dad dead on the floor in the kitchen where I'm standing right now.
RIP

Sorry to hear about your dad, Kanaduh. I can only imagine how hard it must be. All I can offer is, as much as you can; celebrate life. Past, future and present.
