Whoa, easy there, tiger. No need for the vitriol. You're right, I admit it-- just did an image search of rotary phones, and all the gaps are on the right-- sometimes lower right, sometimes upper right, but always the right. What threw me is the stop bar... I thought it as at the top, not the bottom. But I'm wrong.
Sorry for the confusion. But in my defense.... I'm overeager.

OK...... I GOT IT
1) In the first picture, the closeup of the skull, cards, and knives---- it is in Danny's picture from a different angle: on his desk.
2) In the picture of the bird, it is a closeup of the HAND in ADAM's picture, in the hand on Adam's desk with a bird on it.
3) Maynard's picture has nothing in it that is in any other picture.
4) In the picture of the grisly head with a tube hooked up to it and the oxygen tank in the background--- that is in Adam's picture--- look to the left of him behind him. Same stuff - the oxygen tank, the head and all the other stuff, just taken at a different angle.
I don't know what it exactly means, or what kind of puzzle it is, but maybe you guys can go from here........... Sorry if somebody had already brought this up.

you guys better follow up on this--- on reading what everybody else has put down, I think my idea may have more clues than focusing on the whole clock thing, that was probably just when the pictures were taken, which is what I read somewhere else.....

I'm sure that in every photograph there is a tube.
In Adam's it looks like it's coming out of his head and down, then there's the head in a jar on with the tube in there. I'll either post later where I think the other tubes are as I don't have the case with me but I seem to remember that they all go down the page, from top to bottom (or bottom to top).
Anyone else see them?

I think it takes both the lyrics and the artwork to solve the puzzle...
I mightn't be up to date but are all the lyrics already available?
Another thought that appeared to me is the possibility of hidden pictures in the spectogram of 10.000 days... ( example: http://www.bastwood.com/aphex.php ) did anybody check this yet?

The spectrogram is the result of calculating the frequency spectrum of windowed frames of a compound signal. It is a three-dimensional plot of the energy of the frequency content of a signal as it changes over time.

i couldn't find it either but everyone is saying about the magic numbers 11, 13, 1133, 1234, 1122, etc..
so now the theory falls.. or maybe then 1312 or 1213 means something as well?
i have no idea...
don't get me wrong i kinda believe in the magic of numbers, for example my number is 4 ;)
just pointed this out to see what others are thinking after all the rants and chants. TOOL woulnd't make such a mistake while on the photoshoot, they would carefully count the candles if it was about to hold any message or whatever.

the pictures are prepared this way so that you could experience the stereoscopic (3d) effect of them.

I don't think that's another candle behind the biggest candle on the right. To me it just looks like the wax going over the side of the big candle.

There must be a reason the band are wearing suits....maybe since the album addresses Judith Marie's passing, the band members can be acting as a group of 4 "pallbearers" of some sort. Also, MJK is offering truth in the form of wine (related to his mother's beliefs? or just his favorite vintage?) to us, as fans. I think there is a barely noticeable eye in the middle of the glass.

Not sure if this theory has been presented somewhere else or not. but here's what i'd found after researching the net.
On 5/5, the following message was posted on the TOOL website:
"the four individual photos (of the band members) can be used as the pieces of a kind of puzzle, but the puzzle and the meaning of the puzzle will just be another nut to crack. And the time on the clocks is either 1:17 or 11:07"
After some staring & staring at the photos, I did a bit of research on the internet. Here's the short & skinny of what I came up with:
The 3 songs are:
Track #3 - Wings for Marie (pt 1) 6:11
Track #4 - 10,000 Days (Wings pt 2) 11:13
Track #11 - Viginti Tres 5:02
1st, Tool is all about numerology. For our purposes, we focus on #'s 7, 11 & 23, as well as 5, 2, & 6 (see time lengths above).
23 is the number for synchronicity. It is also the title of the last track (in Latin) 'Viginti Tres'. The duration of the last track is 5:02. The duration for track #3 'Wings For Marie" is 6:11. If you add those times 2gether, it equals 11:13, the exact duration of Track #4 "10,000 Days".
The structure of the three songs allows you to create a new one ("Viginti Wings"?) by joining the first two (in the order above) and mixing them with the third one. If you do it well, the final strophe of the both parts of Wings (Daylight dims leaving cold fluorescence. / Difficult to see you in this light.) should sound at the same time.
Signifcance of the numbers??? 5, 2, & 6?? The album's release date is 5/2/06. 7 & 11?? You combine tracks 3,4 (3+4=7) & 11 into 1 new song.
And, remember that whole thing about 23 being synchronicity?? In the remix of all 3 songs playing, at exactly 9:14 (9+14=23), the heavy parts of both tracks #3 & #4 synch perfectly for 11 seconds....
Abracadabra!!!!. I have the track as my background music on MySpace page..look for "/illustrated_man"
The album cover is 3 faces that create 1 head. You're combining 3 songs to make 1 new song. Nutty, huh??
I've also heard theories that the #'s 11, 13, & 23 keep popping up in the photos. 2 phones on Maynards desk, 3 glasses w/ wine poured in them...the 11/13 candle setup in Justin's photo....
Anyways, hope this helps....

Jebus man... what an awful lot of concentration on your theory. This is gonna have to sink in for a while.

Track #11 - Viginti Tres 5:02

i wish it was wax but it's not. you can clearly see the light coming from inside of that candle. it is a 12th candle. the whole theory with 11/13 on Justin photo is not true.

..Also, to add to my theory above regarding the synchronization of the songs.
The artwork is 2 photos, one slightly different than the other, but they both 'synch' to make 1 image.
When you combine Tracks #3 & #11, along w/ track #4, you essentially have 2 songs that are the same but slightly different....(just like the artwork)
Now, these 2 tracks synch up to make 1 new song, just how the 2 separate (& slightly different) images synch up to make 1 complete image
Or, a simple answer: The 3D effect on pictures works because you're seeing 2 different images, one for your left eye & 1 for the right. The synchronized puzzle song is like hearing 2 diffferent songs, one for your left ear & 1 for the right.
Just check out the mixed version on MySpace (/illustrated_man) and listen at the 9:14 moment then tell me it's just a coincidence.
Enjoy!

well, those two songs simply contain the same pattern played for the same amount of time (at the same tempo). not surprising having that those two songs are actually part I and part II of a bigger piece.
the rest is pretty much out of sync.
note that the ending verses (just after the part that syncs) are shifted in time a bit. they could make it sync, though, coulnd't they?
personally i don't buy this..
but it's just my opinion.

I've noticed that the 'hidden song' theory has been posted on the 10,000 Days Wikipedia site as well.
IMHO, I don't think it's coincidence that the 2 sections of 'Wings' synch up perfectly at 9:14 and plays for 11 seconds. 9+14=23. 23 being the title of track #11. The numerology fits. I think it was done intentional, but I've yet to find any definitive answers regarding the photos of the band members that would validate the song finding other than the '2 becoming 1' theory.
I agree above about the latter parts being out of synch & whatnot. I listened to the mixed version in headphones and heard how the last part was off by a split second. I didn't create the .mp3, someone else cut & pasted it & I grabbed it from another forum. It's possible that if it's edited right that the last verses in the 2 songs would synch up perfectly, as if you're hearing Wings pt1 from the left side & pt2 from the right.
And the whole idea of playing 2 tracks at once to make a new 3-D type of song would coincide with the artwork theme of 2 photos that are the same but slightly different to combine the 3-D illusion.
BTW, I'm not proclaiming my theory to be the official answer, just passing along info.

That's awesome, somebody's gotta try that with the Tool Albums and see if they can get anything out of it.

I will tell you why I thought that this was the answer to the puzzle.
I was at songmeanings.net and was reading what Tool fans thought the songs on 10,000 Days were about and one of them mentioned that Viginti Tres means 23. They also meantioned that there are 24 tracks total on Lateralus and 10,000 Days, which isn't 23 but still close. They also said that they believe 10,000 Days is disc 2 of Lateralus. Then I heard about the puzzle. So I started looking at the pictures and in Justin's picture I noticed on the left side of his desk there are 13 candles. There also happens to be 13 tracks on Lateralus. On the right side are 11 candles. 10,000 Days has 11 tracks. I also saw on Danny's card there's a colorful cross. Those colors I thought were the same colors mentioned in the song Lateralus. That's when I was pretty sure that both CDs can be listened to at the same time. The title of the song Right in Two reminded me of the 2 images that make a 3D image when the lenses are used. I also noticed similar lenses on Adam's desk as if it were a hint, and on Maynard's desk he has 2 phones, and sound comes from phones obviously. Also, I noticed that Lateralus and 10,000 Days are about the exact same length if you take away Faaip de Oiad. So that would mean that 23 of the songs play at the same time, but Faaip de Oiad doesn't, which would explain Viginti Tres (23).
After I tried listening to both CDs at the same time and it didn't seem to work, I thought of the commentary on the Parabola DVD. So I hooked 2 headphones up to 2 CD players using one part of one of the headphone sets on one CD player, and one from the other set on the other CD player. But one of the headphones is crap so it didn't seem to work. I emailed [email protected] about this but it wouldn't send so I emailed [email protected] and asked if I was right or not. What does everyone think? Am I right or am I right?

I don't know if anyone has seen this before, maybe, but look at justin's photo through the lenses... BUT UPSIDE DOWN. Is it just me, or do i see the reflection of a skull on the table staring back at you with the top row of teeth just at the edge of the table. Could this be something we haven't seen yet?

I was under the impression that the 'hidden track' wasn't actually all three songs played simultaneously but was the result of playing Viginti Tres followed immediately by Wings for Marie with 10,000 days playing overtop of them in that order.
I'll admit that being Part 1 and 2, it makes sense that they have similar parts, but I don't think it's a coincidence that their times (after you add VT to Wings) are exactly the same. Otherwise it would have made sense for Viginti Tres to have an extra second more or less of apparant nothingness.
And I'm not sure if anyone has mentioned this, (it's impossible to keep track of everything) but when I was looking for some of the lyrics online, I found lyrics for Viginti Tres. Not people ranting about Francisco and shit, but supposed coherent words!
http://www.metrolyrics.com/lyrics/21...l/Viginti_Tres
You can check them out there. They're in Latin I'm assuming, but I'm certain that nothing like that can be heard by just listening to the song. That's why I thought there was something to overlapping songs, thinking that maybe you'd be able to hear it if you matched it with the right song, but so far I've got nothing.
Maybe when matched to the right song....
Maybe if it's condensed to the right amount of time and not flipped and cut and expanded and divided by 19 for no reason.
