Descending should certainly be in these setlists. That's baffling.
I'll add that Aenima, Stinkfist, Schism, 46 & 2 all need extended rests and I would have expected the kickoff album release tour was the time to do it.
I don't know; maybe this is them playing it a little safe for a tighter performance to kick off the new album tours.
I'd prefer tool stop playing it safe, these days.
edit part deux: I've been thinking and will hope that Lotus' prediction re: setlist variety is true. Again, stop playing it so safe tewl.

@junior - can i pick your brain for a few visual related inquiries?
How much prep-time do you guys need to be ready for new or rarely played songs?
Is their any limit to how many songs you guys can be ready for a given night?
Is there any room for "last minute"(ish) decisions to play a song that you guys were not prepared for at the start of a tour?
Let's say in some reality they might give you word that they want to play Flood tomorrow night (which to my recollection hasn't been play since like, '11 ish? idk) - Where would response to that lie on a scale of 0 - 10; Zero being - not gonna happen, play it in the dark. to 10 being - I was hoping you'd say that.

Vicarious legit needs to fuck off. God that song is boring. What's more frustrating about that damn song is it uses a variation of the H. riff and just reminds of a better song they're not playing.
Stinkfist, Aenima, Parabola, Schism, and Vicarious are on the setlist because of the "music videos". If those songs didnt have music videos they probably wouldn't be played. They're kind of iconic visual pieces of the band's history and I don't think theyre ever not going to be played anytime soon.

They can play anything they want. The level of production may be slightly weak until we get time to make something better for it, but it wouldn't be non-existent.
I've got a "generic" lighting page where I can just play along, if needed, as long as I can remember how it goes.
They'd be unlikely to jump into something random mid-show with no warning, as they'd at least want to run through it for themselves at a soundcheck first, so it'd be hard for us to get completely blindsided.
Also, we have some songs ready to go, or at least close to it, that aren't in the current setlist. Stuff they had considered playing and told us about. Always a chance those could eventually find their way in.

It might’ve had something to do with having better seats tonight, but they sounded much more comfortable than last night. Highlights for me were Danny’s gong solo opening for CCtrip. I was mesmerized by the variety of tones he’s able to coax outa that thing. Also, I’m pretty sure the surround-sound is new, right? I heard notes and beats coming from all directions.
Posters seem to be in VERY limited supply, so if you’re gunning for one, have a game-plan. Doors were at 6:30, signed posters were done by 6:40, and ALL were gone before 7... except for the booth on the 3rd level that had no line and posters well after 7:15 (pro-tip: fewer people go up to the top level, so check there).
Also, on the topic of posters, Robbie Travino’s (10/16) event-graphic made think of Invincible right out the gate. So, I was wondering if last Allen Williams ghostly graphic (10/15) might be inspired by a song. Later, while they were playing Pneuma, I could’ve sworn I saw Junior using it in his kaleidoscope-visuals. I also noticed what I thought was RT’s graphic used when they played Invincible. That would’ve made the Aftershock poster based on Fear In... just a theory. Have a look and see what you think. Maybe Junior can chime in? Maybe he’s sworn to secrecy.
Overall, absolutely wonderful couple of nights in Denver. New songs sound great, and The performance is absolutely beautiful.

Dunno if you can answer this or not but..
I always wondered how setlists come to be. Do they basically decide before the tour even starts what theyre gonna play and then does Maynards decide the day of what he feels like playing from the handful of songs they rehearsed before hand? Or does the band agree as a whole the day of or a day before?

It's cool alright, I didn't get up for that shit I can go over with your chair.
He's mad alright. I don't hang around putting soup on your annoying, fake, or whatever.
Sounds like he's trippin. Not trippin' on anything. Ok.
Worried, don't let me worry you. Sounds like a mess and that's about what we get out of most tv.
What, he's alright. Yeah. I'm not your stalkers.
Hi. I'm not in any bad or good reports they claim.
Who. Too much, then get back at me and I can break it down for you.

Or does the band agree as a whole the day of or a day before?

There was a rough list about a month ago. Then that order changed. And changed again. etc.
I'm sure vocal stress is one of the factors, but I don't know the whole formula.
It likely gets weighed against some other concerns.
If they get time to work on other songs during the tour (traditionally), it's possible they might change some out.
I don't really know, for sure.
We just try to stay ready.

Thanks for the insight Junior, you guys do such a crazy amazing job. I follow fourtheye as well and the speaker thing sounds awesome too! Can't wait to see this tour, I'll say hi at the Az. show if I can, somehow managed to get a spot left side of the mix station a bit on the outside though. I'll be at both L.A. too if life permits me, going through a rough spot in life taking care of dad, so I am really looking forward to this outlet and emotional healing.

Sorry. For some reason I thought you ran everything (sound/lighting) back there. Do you handle all the mixing and such, then?

Maybe they have been holding back one more new song for the hometown shows.

I kinda feel like selling my ticket. I really thought they'd showcase more of the new album than this.
I don't mean to be a downer, but easily half of the setlist could go imo. Toss Aenima, Schism, Vicarious, Jambi, 46 & 2, and Stinkfist out.
IDK... this just isn't exciting me.

I feel.ya. I was all gung ho about both nights in LA now I'm going night 2. Hopefully we'll get Intolerance..
After such a long wait for the new album and the positive response to it I was hoping for 50% new material.
When I saw the dates for this first leg my first thought was "they dont have enough time to rehearse the new stuff" it turns out that might have been correct.
I'm certainly half as excited as I was.

And it sounds like the VIP experience has been a bit of a letdown too. Maybe worth it to get front row at Staples and first crack at posters

Yeah I just want to see new material at this point. All the old stuff I want to see they'll prolly never play again. It's pretty lame they dont have at least descending in the line up.
I'm losing hype too. Driving 5 hours to see a greatest hits setlist is bumming me out.

This!
But it's especially confounding that Descending has been played for years now in one form or another.
Why drop it ON THE ACTUAL TOUR FOR THE ALBUM ITS ON.
