ok I'm a bit older my first concert was Rush on Moving Pictures tour in 1981, a life changing experience and probably set me up to be a Tool fan for life.

My second show was Ozzy with Randy Rhodes, then Asia, Dio and the US Festival (heavy metal day of course!)

ahhhhh those were the days! my US Fest ticket was $25...

Re: General Tool tour questions / discussion

URGENT:

Sorry people but I'm desparate.

I just got to manchester from NYC with friends. been up for 30 hours and i'm exhausted.

New Hampshire is FUCKED. every single hotel in the city is not allowing me to check in because I am not 21. I offerred to put $1000+ down payment but they all refuse because of "liability policy". I checked EVERY hotel in the city and surrounding area - it's a state wide thing. I've been up for almost 2 days with lots of driving (toronto to nyc then nyc to manchester without sleep) and I am seriosuly fucking pissed. this state can go to hell. There is no way I can drive home/to kingston after the show tonight.... way too tired.

If anyone can help me it please let me know.
Either a place to stay or some way we can get me into a fucking hotel. I'm so fucking pissed off right now. New Hampshire can go fuck itself. Every state on this tour and I havent had an issue yet...

I have cash/credit card on me, but nobody is letting me stay here.

Anybody who has options/advice/can help please let me know.
I won't have computer access after this post.
647-271-1400
THANK YOU in advance.

(I hope you choke, New Hampshire)

My first concert was Hootie and the Blowfish w/ Cravin' Melon. Clearly I'm the coolest person here!

On a similar note...holy crap the TOOL APW poster is sick. Wish I had gone to that show so I could display it on my wall.

My first concert was Styx... on the Grand Illusion tour! The opening act? The Cars, who'd just release their debut album. Off my lawn whipper-snappers!

I'm also pretty sure they recorded it for that alleged DVD release they've been talking about for the past 8 years.
Supposedly the final 5 nights of the 2002 tour were filmed for the DVD. At this point I think they will probably release the DVD after they have called it a day. It's one way to keep the money flowing in after the job is over.

As for remembering the Reno show, it was great but not a stand out show. I recall hanging back by the soundboard and Third Eye. The stand out show for me was Colorado Springs. There was a fire that night and that show caught me by surprise. After driving 12+ hours from Orem, UT, I wasn't expecting to witness what I did that night. I would like to hear that Reno show again. The Lateralus tour was an incredible time in Tool history for me (and I've been there since they opened for Henry Rollins in 92). It was a bit like the peak of an acid trip and now we are in the come down stages.

Re: General Tool tour questions / discussion

*New Setlist Theory* (at least i think its new, im new to the forum so tell me if its been brought up.)

So a small summer tour, no new album, no new songs, same exact setlist every night?? now why on earth would Tool do this?? Ok so tool is always looking to expand and reinvent the way people listen to and enjoy music. And as far back as we can remember, they have been against filming and recording live shows..well they just put their music on guitar hero for fucks sake...Now anything is possible with these guys..The same setlist every night provides many opportunities to preform a flawless concert..And a flawless concert it would have to be for them to want to publish some sort of live dvd. They would never showcase less than perfect. After the atlanta show and the technical fuck up on adams solo during jambi, it seemed as if maynard saved his voice the rest of the show...why give 100% and risk vocal damage for a show that is already "less than perfect"?....just my thoughts.

*not sure if this post should be somewhere else. again, im new to the forum and would like any advice there is.
thanks for your time,
Dane

EDIT- my first concert was Kiss and Aerosmith....5 rows from the stage..;)

That's a good theory, and I've thought about that (as I'm sure many others have). However... Junior did already mention that a lot of the "issues" with Maynard's Atlanta performance had to do with him being pissed at the overload of flash photography right up front.

Still praying for that live DVD... although, I'm in the camp that believes they'll never release one until they're "done" touring.

Re: General Tool tour questions / discussion

Thanks.
Man so much to say about past 2 nights. I'll post actual reviews tomorrow when I get to a real computer but some main points:
-sorry sonnyboy, but my bloody valentine at apw was ridiculously awful.
-I can tell junior and techs had a difficult time at apw
-festivals suck ass.
-new awesome visual for rosetta stoned today. Astroids atari!
-tool was over an hour late getting on today. Weird.
-the Manchester poster is awesome. Best one yet IMO.
-tweak bird and Ashton keep getting better every day
-been up since morning before new York show with 700ish miles of driving in between.
-today was a fiasco in NH trying to get a place to stay. Ridiculous doesn't begin to describe it.

Good night

Re: General Tool tour questions / discussion

Everyone keeps talking about the live sound on this tour and how it's different (i.e. vocals too low, bass drowning out vocals and such...). Tool hates for their shows to be recorded, via audio and video. Maybe this is one of he reasons for the new "sound" balance. I know a lot of people used their phones and such to record some of the shows, as did I. If you listen to the recordings, some of them you can barley tell what song they are playing. It's like bass overdrive on a recording device but you can still hear the music pretty well with your ears live. Maybe once you get home and try to upload some shit to youtube (which i haven't done, but many have), it's kinda like Tool's way of saying "HA! fuck you! You can't understand shit!" lmao. I recorded other shows on previous tours for my personal remembrance and the audio is WAY more clear. Just a thought...

The only way to stop cameras is to search with metal detectors. Cell phones dont have strong enough flash give May May a headache (IMHO)

just sayin.....

Re: General Tool tour questions / discussion

Honestly, i jumped in a car with a bunch of people i barely knew back in 2000, drove with them 200 miles to a pantera gig on the Reinventing the steel tour, had no money, nowhere to stay, it was pissing down with rain, didnt have a cell-phone, surely no internet access. Just a ticket & a keeness to see the band. Lost my kinda friends at the gate, loved the show, slept on a park bench by the sea, hitched back a day & a half later, best experience ever. Now when i go to a gig out of town I have it all planned beforehand but it's never as good as that was.

Wow, epic show! Sucks not to be able to remember that one. Sadly, I was not only old enough to remember my first show, but I was the one who asked my mom if I could go. So she took me and my younger brother. She took me to my second ever show, Kiss, about 6 months later. .38 Special opened for them. I think it wasn't until my third show and first ever festival w/ Santana/Sammy Hagar/Eddie Money/Montrose, that she let me go alone. I even got Montrose' drummer's drum stick when he threw it into the crowd. :)

So does nobody remember that "electronic" sounding vamp before vicarious started in Fairfax, VA? They all went into a strange musical movement during which DC was laying down some crazy techno-ish sounding stuff. Its sounded like it was planned out, and not just improvised. I've listened to boots from the SA and NC show, but they both lack this section that was performed in Fairfax, VA. It makes me wonder if this was a glimpse of the "new direction" they may be taking their next album.

I wonder if anyone got a recording of the show, seeing how the goose stepping security had everything on lock down.

I also recall most of the songs being played at full speed...especially rosetta.... - although lateralus seemed slowed down.

Re: General Tool tour questions / discussion

Since others are doing it...

My first show:

Def Leppard when I was 11 at the Capital Center in Landover, MD when I was in 7th grade. My buddy won tickets on the radio and his mom took us.

I'll always remember it (not so much for the show) because it was election night, when Slick-Willy got elected and at some point the lead singer came out and was like "Well looks like you all got a new president tonight."

To which my buddies mom, standing next to me, goes "Oh shit!" in a very disappointed tone.

So funny.

We were getting a new president, regardless who would have won that election. But yes, Oh shit indeed.

First show was the Scorpions around 84. Bon Jovi opened. Ended up seeing Bon Jovi more times while I was in high school than I care to admit, both headlining and opening. Scary (and good) how my tastes have changed since those days.

Scorps are still cool though! :)

But yea, there are few bands I have not "outgrown" over time. And not because I think they're not still good bands, I just don't connect with them anymore. Rush is a good example. I loved them as a kid and saw them twice (Signals tour). But then one year while listening to Grace Under Pressure I decided to pop in a cassette called Never Mind The Bullocks. Things changed for me after that.

I do have to say that besides my fascination with Tool, there is really only one other popular act that I have been listening to for this long and still love- Peter Gabriel. I NEVER get tired of Peter Gabriel. I don't listen to him all day like I used to, but I still get around to it from time to time and jump at any chance to see him.

The major base of this argument is hear-say that isn't even true.
The comment wasn't as stated above, and it wasn't before 'Lateralus'.
The correct word was, "drum-sterbation", and was in the middle of 'Lateralus' just prior to the 'drum duo' between Danny and (Tweak Bird) Ashton. That section of the show can easily be seen as a bit self-indulgent, thus 'drumsterbation'. He's harmlessly poking fun at Danny and Ashton, and actually being a bit light-hearted.

I don't necessarily back all of Maynards idiosyncracies, but another arguement I hear a lot is that he is the "Frontman" of Tool and should have a dialogue with the crowd. Where is it written in stone that being the singer of a band automatically makes them a "Frontman"? Tool has always been unconventional in every aspect of being a band. Why does there have to be a frontman?
Very few "frontmen" actually say anything genuine anyway. There are exceptions, I don't need to see a list of amazing frontmen. So many of the ones who "connect" with the crowd are bullshitting, and those are the ones who should be evaluated. How many "best crowds ever!" can there be? Every town on the tour can't really be their favourite.
This band doesn't have, and perhaps doesn't need, a frontman.
This is pretty much what I have been trying to explain to people who are complete morons on this forum for years, gave up awhile ago because its pointless, I am glad to see someone who actully is part of the "live band" (in my eyes) explain this, though, I doubt it will matter much, as many tool fans are fuckin turds and think Tool exists just to make their life complete and should comply to everything they imagine the band should... you should quit while you are ahead junior (explaining these things that is)... people just dont get it

It's all true. Like and Dislike are cheap. They'll do what they will.

Most of the cookie cutter tool fans dont ever use the music as a creative spark or an inspiration like the band intends. Instead they dwell in an endless whirlpool of distorted views....I know people that saw em at 'palozzzza in 1993 - they cant fucking stand the lateralus album...for them tool is only opiate and undertow - then there are the people I know who hooked on during lateralus and cant stand 10KD....and then there are the noobs who prefer 10KD to the older stuff......like I said.....- Like and Dislike are cheap.

Junior: In Fairfax VA I noticed a strange musical interlude before vicarious - it was kind of an "electronica" sound (although the meter was all over the place...just how danny likes it) - I describe it a few posts up from this one:

I've listened to a few bootlegs from this short tour and its not on any of those recordings. Have you noticed (I know your kinda busy during the show!) this kind of interlude at any of the other shows?

At the end of the 10KD album the song intension kind of goes into a similar style. I am anticipating some more of that kind of stuff on their next album which will REALLY piss all these tool turds off!

BTW Junior, the Fairfax show was EXCELLENT an production despite what any jaded fan says. I was getting worried about all the negitive feedback this tour was recieving, but you guys restored my faith!!

Re: General Tool tour questions / discussion

Okay so I'm absolutely certain the answer to this has been posted but I really don't think I can read through 30+ pages just to find it. I apologize for my laziness.

But I have a question about the posters on the tour. What exactly is for sale? I've gathered there is specific ones for each show, so how much are these? Are there signed and unsigned ones or just signed ones? Basically what's the deal with the posters?

25 for unsigned, 100 for signed. There are approximately 350 signed posters at the previous shows (or so I have read). So get one early.

This is a great link.

I don't get why there are so many complaints about how maynard chooses to present himself on stage. Just from the videos in the above link you can clearly see that he is enjoying himself. I think that his choice not to be front and center is a great one, and I enjoy being able to see his silhouette infront of the screens. For me, this adds way more than could ever be taken away.

At the Charlotte show, I was even with the stage on Justin's side, so I couldn't see Maynard very well (Danny's drums are massive). I guess you could say that I didn't get the full effect of what he is doing this tour, but I did have an amazing view of what he does when he goes behind danny.

Re: General Tool tour questions / discussion

Here are my thoughts on Tool’s direction recently, and some other notes (it’s a little long-winded, so forgive me)-

A little background on myself - I’m a lurker on these forums, but I always visit here the most around tour times, and have caught every show Tool has played since 2001 in my area (Toronto). I’ve loved Tool since ’98 when I got into Aenema and remember being blown away by their Coachella ’99 bootleg I got soon after they played that show. I had never heard a band play so tight and a vocalist who had so much energy throughout the show. The scream near the end of ‘Jerk-Off’, at the end of an hour and a half long set, was absolutely unreal (do yourself a favour and watch http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6TgxaqR-QUQ). I’ve been hooked ever since and have loved everything they’ve produced, live or on record.

Vocally, in my opinion, Maynard’s prime was that ’99 Coachella concert and the first couple shows of the 2001 Lateralus tour. If you can, get a hold of the May 15th 2001 bootleg from Atlanta and listen to how strong his voice is. Then compare that to any live recording since then - huge, huge difference. It’s like something popped and within a few shows he just couldn’t handle the intense screams any more. And I haven’t heard it since. As Adam, Danny, and Justin have become more and more impressive musically, Maynard’s voice and enthusiasm has faded. I couldn't care less that he's at the back of the stage either, or even seen at all for that matter - you can just hear it in his voice.

But you know what? I’m 100% cool with that. Performers get older, and they can’t physically yell their head off night after night. They can’t sing certain songs like they used to, or not at all. They stick with what works - I understand.

However - I’m seeing them this coming Wednesday in Toronto, and from the looks of it the setlist will be near identical to the last 2-3 times I’ve seen them. For the record, I love every song on there and can’t wait to hear it. But for a tour that isn’t supporting an album I was expecting them to pull out a couple surprises. Throw in ‘The Patient’, ‘Pushit’, or ‘The Grudge’. Instead of ‘Schism’, throw in ‘H’, or ‘Swamp Song’. Since Maynard apparently picks the setlists, I’m not expecting him to choose to belt out ‘Hooker with a Penis’ or ‘Intolerance’, but the untapped potential that the band has to keep fans on their toes by playing more of their material always leaves me a little bewildered.

Will the show be awesome? Every show has been great up to this point, so I have no reason to believe otherwise. I always look forward to getting a little out of my mind and zoning out to the amazing sounds that always come from the stage and the visual that are ALWAYS mind-blowing. But I’d also have to say that Maynard is past his prime performing live with Tool and doesn’t seem as inspired as he once was. Although I hope I'm wrong.

Just my $0.02. Peace.

Couldn't agree more. These videos are amazing and it certainly looks like MJK is having fun. His dancing during Jambi is great.

Can't wait for my two shows, Toronto and Cinci.

On top of the limited edition Adam designed custom posters for each show ($25 and $100) there are also 2 other general tour posters with all dates that only come unsigned.

Re: General Tool tour questions / discussion

Junior:

Does the band primarily focus on their own "good time"/enjoyment and the visceral reaction at the shows in order to gauge their "relevance?"

Basically what I'm getting at is... tell me that they don't pay any attention to the chorus of online "whiners" who seem to only be content with their own personalized performances?

They're quite smart, so I assume they understand that large/arena-sized bands have always spurred this sort of reaction (especially the greats), it's just that the internet has now given a loud voice to these sorts?

Also, have you ever given any thought to going back to doing a "strobe effect" during the "breakdown" in Stinkfist. During the 2006 mini-tour, you were doing this in conjunction with that part of the video (with all the white strobes/mirrors) and I personally thought it was a fascinating effect.
