Which?

Which one of the two messages is the best:

Message to Harry Manback
Message to Harry Manback II

I think the first has more impact, but maybe thats only because that one is the firtst i have heard.

First, definitely

In fact, i'd say the 2nd is my least-favorite track on any Tool album =/

I like the original off of Aenima. It is more clear, original, and has that goofy love-poem music in the background.

Well considering that MTHM 1 has a meaning...

The second one is B.S....
What on Earth were they thinking when they put that on Salival? CDs can hold 80 minutes worht of music... and the cd now only has about 74 minutes on it.. they could have taken off MTHM 2, gotten themselves another 2 minutes or so, and put a live version of AEnema or Flood or something...

Thats the only dumb move that I know of that Tool has ever made. Thats their worst effort of all time.

I enjoyed listening to the violin and piano music of both of them. I thought it was pleasent, something i'd like to say about more music these days.

harsh words, considering

to say that Salival is the worst Tool offering is perposterous. it was not meant or implied to be something new. instead, it was a live effort thats purpose was to capture the band as whole, in that corner of time in the world. they will grow into better muscians, and produce more comprehensive live outings, and when all is said an done, this boxed set will serve as the foundation. "third eye" is to tool as "darkstar" is to the greatful dead and "pushit" is equivalant to "stairway." already the band has shown signs of growing genuis with dispo/flect/iad. it is only a matter of time before tool writes something that changes the ENTIRE face of music forever.

I think lateralus will change the entire face of music forever, true genius takes a while to be recognized. But, their next album will be better than lateralus.

I know 1 was off an answering machine, but i thought 2 was just done in a studio or something. Correct me if I'm wrong.

I think 1 is better, though it's not that great. It's great to play to all my 'normal' friends, they don't get it, they think I'm scary.

Well the first one has the piano, which sounds better than the violin on the second one.

However, the second one has the line "I couldn't sleep last night because I was thinking of your fucking ugly face." Hehe that's hilarious

If the first one is a real message off an answering machine, could it be that the second one is real too, that this italian guy called again? Both messages were recorded almost at the same time, though.

Still, the first one is original and better.

Hotsy Menshot from Green Jelly (a joke-metal band in which Maynard debuted as one of the Three Little Pigs explains:
“The voice on Message to Harry Manback is my old friend Francesco, (from Rome, Italy) who would come and live with me and my old roommate Jerry, off and on. I kicked him out after he stole some possessions from Jerry, and he called that night on the answering machine because he was afraid of me, and couldn’t threaten me to my face. He was 6’2” but only weighed 130 lbs and looked like Ichabod Crane from Sleepy Hollow. I could’ve broken him like a twig.
He called back again the next morning, and that message was finally heard on Message to Harry Manback II on Salival. Anway, everyone used to imitate it from my impression, even though they have never heard it.
Years later, I found the tape and played it for Maynard, who by this point, was my roommate. Next thing I knew, a few edits, some piano ... viola! ... “Harry Manback” is a joke name from the famous comedian, Bill Hicks (deceased)”

+

I like them both.
If you ignore the words to number II its like the peaceful aftermath of a violent storm (following Pushit). If you take only the musical feeling to heart its almost like a peaceful eulogy, the closing chapter before the character in Pushit can build a new life.

That right there is why I love and accept them both. I figure, if it's on an album by TOOL, it's there for some sort of reason, and not just a "filler." While I don't listen to the two regularly, they're still fun when I come across them.

Re: Which?

You mean whatever floats your boat? Sorry, that just kinda confused me...but if you don't "believe" we're analyzing it...then why even post a thread?

I think its funny. Kinda shows how people can be dicks sometimes and how people can't let go of something. Gotta agree with the "Y... you suck" thing ;)

I think it's really funny when he (the italian) says: your fucking ugly face.... I laugh my ass off whenever I hear him say this, but I think "I want your balls smashed" is the winner...

Re: Which?

these songs have a lot of value when you're lying in bed late at night, lights off, eyes closed, headphones in, volume reasonabley loud, not thinking.....not fuckin' analyzing anything. it's a trip and these songs fit well. and they're funny.

Re: Which?

I personally think both are hilarious. The first one is great because it's longer and it has some hilarious lines ("You wanna know something? FUCK you! I want your balls SMASHED! Eat SHIT! BASTARD!" and the translation "Die, bastard, and go suck dicks on a plane!") and also how he keeps going on about how he's going to "die outta cancer, I promise!". But the second one is also funny because the Italian guy's insults are so pathetic (When he says "You...you SUCK!!" because he can't think of anything to say), and I always laugh when he says "Have you ever been trying to take a nap? My heart beats too fast because I'm thinking of your fucking ugly face!) and "Ugggh...you really hurted me Ohhh you really hurt me!" And of course the background music that makes it sound like a love song and the birds singing just makes it even funnier.

Nah jus fink it would be lame if ur prankin sum1 with it cos in the background there is piano n stuff so they would jus know it was a CD.
