I didn't see it happen, either. My attention is mostly on Jeff, the drummer, in that one. I watch him for visual cues for the differnt parts of it.
I wonder how many participate in that pre-show bit and figure it out later?
I think it does some good for people to see Maynard's lighter side. The "Blood into Wine" movie does that, too. People get too caught up in the assumed serious side and tend to overlook the humour that has run through all of the Tool stuff, as well.
yea, I enjoy Jeff's drumming. I saw him with Ashes Divide in a tiny club in lancaster, PA a year or so ago.
Tim was directing attendees all over the place to find "their" seat as some people were confused about it being GA with a seat number. Was hilarious to watch them follow him to the front, then to the back of the theater! Then of course Carina wondering around handing out peanuts showing off the goods ;) She loudly pardoned her way across the row in front of us to deliver the guy directly in front of us peanuts. When she made her way back out to the isle and i forcefully removed my eyes from her, I turned around to see my wife giving me "the look". LOL
Unfortunately by the end of the show when Maynard was being more vocal with the audience my wife was ready to bolt. She is a diehard Maynard and TOOL fan, but the two TOOLbags in front of us put a damper on the show. Constantly standing up waving their arms and screaming the next lyrics during a quiet pause in the song. Not to mention their in chair headbanging. I wish some people would have respect for others at shows, especially a theater based show where everyone is seated and there to enjoy the show as a whole. I guess I'm just getting old!
yeah. sorry, i can't NOT dance if i feel the music. and if that causes people behind me to stand up, too bad.
edit: but i certainly don't sing/yell lyrics. i just enjoy the show, smiling like the cheshire cat.
Yes, I have no problem with standing/dancing at a concert because if i choose to sit I know I will ahve my view obstructed, but in this setup it was the equivalent to standing up during a movie.
i know.....what a badass show thats gonna be... too bad they cant both go for one more date in cleveland on the 23rd... then i wouldnt have to spend $250

by setting, you mean an intimate venue with seats?
meh. still, i don't care. saw em in denver, and the first night, as "his" twitter says, we were on our feets. musta be a disco kinda night. the second night for country, no one really stood up til the second set. i imagine it's going to be the same in detroit, but i don't know about chicago, since it's GA. like i said, if i feel it, i move. if not, then ok. i would try to be respectful and move elsewhere to stand up, but that's usually in the aisle, and the ushers usher you back to your seat, so sorry for anyone behind me.
edit: apologies to junior, as i am sure i will be in your way for detroit, but maybe not.

unless that was a joke I failed to get, you Americans have some seriously messed up english. what the fuck is the difference between any of those?
edit: wait - I sort of get it. at least the obama one.
For some reason people in Nevada like to pronounce their state name like a nasally country girl because, I quote, "It's an A, not an O," but only apply that exception to certain things or else they sound, as Rahm Emanuel would say, retarded.
ANYWAYS, back to Tool.
Watching Reflection at Radio City on YouTube right now.
Sigh...I really wish Blink 182 wasn't my music of choice in 2002...

...i was at the radio city show....
to this day, i still say it was the best concert ive ever seen, (and my very 1st time seeing tool, btw!!)
I've actually never been to California. Which is kind of surprising considering it's probably the one state I do WANT to visit, yet I've been to about 20 others.
When you make it to Norther California let me know - I have an extra room and can show you around. San Fran is a world class city and is not to be missed...
"Yeah Tool is fucking amazing. But there’s a big chunk of their fan base that think they’ve become thought provoking geniuses just from listening to them."
In all fairness, I am sympathetic to your complaint.
Though, I also know that its common for many bands (not all, of course) to stick to set lists throughout tours/album releases.
Tool, in particular, tends to cater to fans in individual cities who do not travel to multiple shows: They find a set list that works for them, perfect it, and then they stick with it.
I very much hope that this post doesn't feed the controversy. Not my intention.
yeah he was playing off the absolute MAYHEM around here regarding the 2009 summer set list. I thought the board was going to melt...LOL

Go see puscifer if you have a chance. I've come off a bad month. I went in boston. Truly a great experience maynard is awesome. He looks like he is having lots of fun.

Have you seen the mug shot of the mom in the news who killed her daughter? Tell me she doesn't look A LOT like a certain guitar player we're all very fond of.
wen is tool gonna make new cd and tour? anyone know?
sick of this puscifer shit
i'd rather listen to two dogs having anal sex and smearing cum all over their nut-sacs while a zebra licks it off
I went to 15 tool concerts last summer.
The past 2 puscifer shows in Toronto this week were easily on par with the best shows from the tool tour. Don't bash puscifer if you haven't given it a chance.
Currently enroute to Cleveland for another show tonight. Will post reviews when I make it back to Kanaduh.

are they still doing the Country schtick? I've seen them 4 times and that one was by far my least favorite "theme"....

Out of the curiosity bubbling in my skull... Does anyone here think Maynard will ever return to center stage for Tool shows? I've thought a lot about this and I still am not sure. Part of me emphatically says no. Since the Lateralus and 10,000 Days tours, the 13th Step APC tour, and even the Puscifer shows, Maynard has chosen to be shrouded in shadows, hiding behind a curtain, or poised behind a TV monitor. Yes, I know why he does this. But the part of me that wonders if he may come back to center stage for Tool is if the lyrical material for the next album happens to be something that Maynard isn't personally, emotionally invested in... at least not in some serious way. Say for example there are fewer songs like Reflection, Wings for Marie, The Patient... and more songs like Rosetta Stoned. I suppose I could see him being more of a spectacle for songs like that.
I guess the only reason I am curious is because I think I'd feel slightly bored if the next tour once again featured (from left to right) Adam/Maynard/Danny/Justin in the same general layout they have been for a decade.

No. Apparently Adam, Danny, and Justin have begun writing/jam sessions. Adam has claimed for some time that him and Justin have been writing riffs individually... but nothing major... those ideas will likely get flushed out in these supposed jam sessions. From how I understand it, despite being all over the place for his wine and Puscifer, Maynard has contributed somewhat toward these sessions.

Tool isn't cool? Likely not. Tool has always taken great pride in creating a physical piece of art that you can hold in your hand and interact with.

I haven't heard about this, but it sounds interesting. If it's valid, I wouldn't count on it coming out anytime soon... The first notions of Maynard singing on a new version of King Crimson's 'Twenty-First Century Schizoid Man' surfaced yearrrss ago, and yet it was released late last year. That was just one song.

um. ok. totally different from any other night. i flew vagina air tonight, and it was different than the first night i flew in royal oak. i don't what these guys do, but they are all over it. if you have the pleasure to see puscifer 2+ nights, please do it. they will not let you down.
Random question - does anyone know what the pre-gig music was that Tool picked to be played over the PA from the 2009 shows? (I was at the NY/NJ All Points West festival)
Someone described here it as "lounge tribal jazz" - I kinda dug it.
