Try this out... very cool, different-sounding Aenima.
Sorry if old, I accidentally discovered this last night while listening to Aenima.
Put Tool's Aenima into a CD player and start playing it. Adjust the headphones so that the jack is not completely into the CD player's headphone socket, but is not too far out. If you have it right, the music should sound somewhat distant, the guitar and bass should be hard to hear, and the drums should be more present (not on all tracks).
It's hard to explain the sound this creates - basically it's like an unfinished version of Aenima. You can hear the different vocal layers and effects almost individually, and can more easily distinguish everything Danny Carey is doing on the drums. This is really cool, especially on Eulogy, as Maynard's "goodbye" note at the end of the song is much louder and raw. Aenema also has a very cool sound to it, as the "learn to swim" sections sound more like a growl then they did before.
I don't want to spoil everything, but there are definitely some surprises. It is entirely worth it to listen to the entire album in this style, which I am doing right now.

The album is in stereo, what you're doing is playing the left (or right, unsure) channel in mono through the headphones. You're listening to half the record. Certain parts come out more because they are panned to that side.

a while back my headphones got fucked up, and it basically did the same thing, i was able to hear certain things in each song, but the guitar and bass were nearly impossible to hear, my exact thought was that it sounded as if they were in the process of recording the song, a super early demo or something, you could hear the different layers of maynards voice recordings, danny's drumming could also be heard almost as if you were outside the studio listening to him playing, i dont think there is anyway to purposely rig your headphones to hear it, you just kind of have to stumble on it i guess

its true, i found out about this technique on accident actually, i was listening to red hot chili peppers soul to squeeze (different genre but i enjoy it) and the vocals never came into the track! it was like doing a kareoke on accident. but yeah i like doing this sometimes it makes you listen differently

What's happening is that either you are listening to one or the other channel that has jumped the contact inside the jack and is touching both leads on your headphone input, or both channels have done so, and you are listening to both channels through both the left and right headphones at the same time.
