For all the things Tool makes a decent coin on... and a Live DVD/Blu-Ray being an obvious project they wouldn't take lightly and clearly are in no rush to pursue....
Why, for pure fuck, haven't they just gone back to some of their best shows over the years... picked.... 4 of them, done proper mixing and mastering of them and release them?
Take a band like Umphreys McGee... totally different band, I get that... they have made their ENTIRE live catalog available to fans. They even record and burn them to CD at mass to sell to fans at the end of their shows. A token to help remember their experience.
Tool could easily just pick a few cream-of-the-crop performances from each album tour and push those out at $20 a pop (maybe more, but hopefully still reasonable).
Not sore that this hasn't happened... just confused. Seems like a logical and reasonably approachable project.

Grateful Dead, Phish and Pearl Jam all have their concerts available online. The catalog for live Grateful Dead and Phish on Spotify is months long of music to listen to.
All we want is one live Tool DVD. One day we'll have it. But not anytime soon.

maybe they don't have the individual tracks recorded? they might not have been recording anything at the mixing table, and the mix that comes through the speakers on stage is too convoluted to use in any real mixing and mastering process beyond a simple EQ tweak.

i've never heard of Umphreys McGee, but i gotta respect them for that. that actually requires a shit load of work if they're mixing it too. the acoustics of the venue would require a different balance than in the studio, so they'd either have to tweak it in a quiet room behind stage or not tweak it at all. and a lot of live mixes are a little more bass heavy in order to push all the energy throughout the stadium, so the raw sound from the booth might not sound so good on headphones, in your car, or on TV.
i've been to shows where it took a couple days to release a live CD from that night, but i've never seen em at the booth right after the show.

now this i don't have anything to respond with. other than a repeat of above that they might not have the individual tracks (drums. cymbals. guitar. bass. vocals. ambient noise. extras.) recorded.
another idea i had was that maybe they don't want to seem like they're selling out or something... but then again, with some of the stuff seen passing through toolarmy....................

I'd be shocked if they didn't a stockpile of quality soundboard recordings (everything mic'd individually) in their vault. And I'm not saying Tool should release everything, but a handful properly celebrating their live shows over the years I don't think would break their business model of quality not quantity.
Umphreys pulls off those those post show CDs in 20 to 40 min after the show, and they are excellent quality. But again, not saying Tool should do that. Logistics are different for one.

Too have said before that they value the live experience pretty highly, and I don't imagine that's changed lately. Some live stuff would be nice, and it's great to see some band releasing every live show, but for me personally one good quality show from each era is more than enough. The returns diminish greatly after that.

I guess so, but I got the impression Maynard wasn't the one behind the no live album thing. I suspect there will be a proper live album or DVD at some point, but I imagine that will coincide with the demise/retirement of the band.

Here's my breakdown:
* The curveball is close to being ready (though they've been saying this for as long as I can remember)
* The curveball might be some kind of movie (I could be reading too much into the newsletter though)
* Danny seems to be happy to preview some stuff from the new album to friends, which I guess suggests there's been some progress (but none really worth reporting)
* A few hints to suggest that Tool might be playing in the summer festival period, presumably next year. If true would suggest they expect the new album to be ready by then.
In non-newsletter related new Maynard has had a hip replacement.

Just came across this shirt, which I'd never seen before. Wondering if anyone here has seen it before or can confirm it's authenticity?

I would say this:
Fuzzy/blurry graphics usually equals bootleg. Seemed to happen a lot in the mid 90s.
Scattered tour dates listed (11 out of the actual 40 or so). Interestingly, they all seem to be from November.
Mixture of Aenima graphics with a wrench thrown in seems suspect, too.

Which do you suppose happens first: the new Tool album or book 6 of Song of Ice and Fire?

Well it's been 9 years for one and 4 years for the other and at this point seems like both should be no more than a year away.

Early in their existence, the Columbus Blue Jackets played "The Grudge" whenever there was a fight on the ice. Made me love the fights that much more!

I've heard vicarious played at The Comiskullar and Soldier field for white sox and bears games. Someone responsible for music at chicago sporting events likes Tool.

At the Blackhawks games I've been hearing "Jambi", "The Pot", "Viacarious", and "Lateralus" quite regularly for a few years. The person in charge of that also seems to like Rage Against the Machine.
Edit: "Stinkfist", too.
