we're, um. actually. not that cool. in fact, for every character over 280, there is a barely known yet heavily enforced fine. but, it's, uh, it's aggregate, so i'm talking about fractions of a penny here. over time, "not realizing", they add up to a lot.

Feeling old and reminiscent. Anyone remember seeing tool in a club with MJK out front and shirtless?
First show for me Dec. 4, 1996 in the Ritz in Raleigh, NC.

feeling old as well
saw tool many times in the sf bay area with mjk out front
at the Berkeley Square (not there anymore)
and a couple of times at the Hotel Utah
for Prison Sex they brought out a small cage and invited a random fan to sit in it for the entire piece, at the end MJK poured water on the guy in the cage making it look like he was urinating on him ...good times

I guess that’s the price you pay to play the game. Put it in my tab.

Favorite MJK Moment #5
My 2nd Tool show and it's in Tijuana on the roof of the cultural center that seemed to have been a parking garage at one point. If you read my story about the Police confiscating cigarettes and selling them inside, this is the same gig.
The stage was decorated with a huge oak tree that was back and bottom lit, I think it was painted white, it's not clear if the band had brought it or it was supplied by venue.
Prison Sex had just broken big and it was introduced as "a song you're going to hear in elevators soon"
Anyway, it turns out that MJK was pretty frisky that night and after a few songs he talked about just getting back from the UK where he met Morrissey.
It sounded legit at first, being a Smith's fan I was quite intrigued..
But soon the story took a turn.
"So I'm butttfucking Morrissey and I'm slamming him hard, bam bam"
"And then I start rabbit punching him in the back of the head as hard as I fucking can" BAM BAM BAM
Hes pretty demonstrative and acting the story out thrusting his hips and swinging clenched fists as he tagged the imaginary Moz in the head. Both fucking and beating the Pope of Mope at the same time.
The crowd reacted kind of stunned with an uncomfortable sort of laugh.
I was mesmerized standing watching from 30 feet away, having only heard Undertow and parts of Opiate (not gaping lotus, it was cut off my copy) I had no idea these cats were capable of having a sense of humor, albeit a dark and bizzaro one.
I've talked to other folks who heard similar versions of the story from previous dates on the tour so I'm pretty sure it wasn't an hallucination.
I believe the song they broke into was an early version of Stinkfist.
For many years after hearing the Morrissey story, I was certain that MJK was as gay as they come, and had to be convinced he wasn't.

Gone I think. But good looking out.
Man the FV price difference between San Jose and Fresno is laughable.

Yeah its a swing of about $25 +fees difference. I really wanted to hold off to avoid fees and just hit the box offices day of but ended up picking up lower 116's for SJ and jumped on the floors for Fresno. They were such great seat locations it was worth it to me. Going to wait out Vegas and see how it goes.

If San Diego gets 7empest, I'll probably pull the trigger on Fresno, it's only 45 mins further than SJ

The show last night in SD was incredible. The set list wasn’t anything all that new, but we got Descending and it is flat out amazing.
Want to say something to junior- your work on both Pneuma and Descending is other-worldly. I especially love the lights opening up across the arena like the sun during the chorus of Pneuma. Excellent work.
VIP tomorrow. Will post more later. The band sounds great.

Got all my plans in place for Glendale. Does anyone have any pro-tips for Gila River Arena? I guess I’ll be Ubering back and forth from Sky Harbor since the light rail only goes so far, and people in my group are poster hungry.

It should be noted that while the format of ticket allocations appears to have changed (reportedly to help those who've paid a bunch of money, and don't really have the opportunity to line up hours in advance) the reports that the new guy is a prick seem pretty subjective.
My opinion: VIP seating should just be allocated in order of purchase. The idea of lining up hours in advance seems a little absurd to me in the VIP context - that's the exact opposite of what I'd want to do after dropping that much coin. Surely for $500 a ticket someone can be paid to sort that out.

That first SD show was among the best I have ever seen them. Band energy was great and the sound, while not nearly as loud as Staples, was as good as you can make Viejas sound. For some reason the sound of the second show, even though I was more or less in the same position as night 1, sounded murkier/boomier to me. Plus no Descending meant the set list was not as good. But night 1? Hell ya. That VIP post lotus put up nailed it.
For VIP soundcheck night 2 we got Part Of Me (with Maynard), The Patient (with Maynard) and, once inside, The Pot and FI. It was nice hearing The Patient again after all this time.
So far, it seems like they are alternating Descending with a combo of The Pot/Part Of Me. Not a good trade-off, imo. As soon as you hear "Who are you to wave your finger"... it very likely means you won't get Descending.
I enjoyed the VIP experience overall. First dibs on unsigned merch was great, the food was fine and I really enjoyed multiple conversations with fellow fans. But I may skip it going forward because of the ticket distribution policy, even though I had a great seat. Plus the new VIP experience just cannot compare with what Adam used to do for it. When I show new VIPers the old VIP photos, it's just so far from what it was. I dunno... waffling a bit on it. We'll see.
Now bring on AZ! Got an excellent face value seat for that one. Can't wait!

Last time they played Glendale they did The Pot/Intolerance, so let’s hope they remember that and go with Descending this go-round!

Folks, long time no post. Are VIP all consumed for NOLA? I was skimming toolband.com and didn’t see anything. Headed down there later this month for the Saturday show.

So SJ got both The Pot and Descending tonight. No Part Of Me. My days predicting their setlist for this tour are officially over!

Same. That's a pretty good setlist for what they'll actually play. I could really go for 4+ songs off FI.
Still if they could just pop vicarious right off the set and play literally anything else from their catalogue i would be super super happy.

I agree, but that is probably wishful thinking at this point. Maybe the thing that takes it out of the set is when they finally start doing Tempest. But I think they'll pull something else to make room (hopefully something besides a new song).
Overall, I would be super happy if I get that SJ setlist in AZ.

No they opened with fi, Ænemathen, The Patient. So good to hear that an catching another Swamp Song. Overall tonight was a bit better than SJ. A lot more interplay between them and jamming. Also got the extended Stinkfist. Fresyes as Maynard called it.

Yep! Killer show. The Patient was third in The Pots spot. SWAMP SONG!!! Was in place of Descending/POM/Intolerance - plus we got Merkaba abbreviated.
Sweet parking lot bootleg shirts as well. :)

"Yeah Tool is fucking amazing. But there’s a big chunk of their fan base that think they’ve become thought provoking geniuses just from listening to them."

Here and especially on Reddit there is non stop talk about 7empest being played. I don't think it is going to just come out of nowhere.
At the VIP soundcheck they were reported to be playing Swamp Song, then it was played live. There there have been reports of The Patient at soundcheck for the past few weeks, then it was played live.
I don't think there is a big chance of 7empest live until it is properly practiced and goes through the VIP soundcheck routine.
