Any one hear of any melbourne solo shows aside from the big day out... i really don't want my first live tool experience to be along side bands like wolfmother and the infamous imminent death by big day out crowd.
There's plenty of good bands on the Big Day Out. I've been going to Big Day Outs since 1993 and the whole "the crowd is full of wankers" argument is a pretty lame one imo. Sure, everyone prefers sideshows, but festivals aren't the terrible experiences some people like to make them out to be.
Don't like Wolfmother (neither do I)? Fine, go to another stage and see another band. Problem solved.
I'd be going if it was just Tool and an army of farting monkeys, but it's actually quite reasonable this year:
The Lineup has Tool, Deftones, (dare we dream of "Passanger...?") Nick Cave w/ Grindermen, Iggy & The Stooges, Black Keys... All quality.
Add in the like of Rammstien, Andrew WK, Primal Scream for shits and giggles and reliving high school, and it's non-too-shabby.
More then enough to make me not feel bad about ending my self-imposed BDO retirement.
They have been throwing in Passenger into some of their shows - I saw them play the song in Knoxville - awesome! I wouldn't be too surprised if the Nard decided to drop in.
Nick Cave? Jebus that guy alone makes it worth turning out for whatever show is being put on. I last saw him here in LA, 2008, and We Call Upon the Author ranks as one of the single greatest live moments I have experienced in my many years of attending shows. He also did Tupelo which ripped me back to my childhood in the harshest possible manner. If you're into brooding, chaotic music for adults, Nick Cave simply is the best.
Edit- errr... GO TOOL!

You guys will get some. I remember junior posting way-back-when that when Tool are touring they almost never get more than 2 days off in a row. So you (and when i say "you" I mean somewhere in Australia/New Zealand) could get something prior to Jan. 21, or something between Jan. 31 - Feb. 3 or after Feb. 7. Plenty of room for a few solo shows...
and maybe a stop off in Hawaii. :)
That formula doesn't apply to Australia. The freight logistics sometime require more days off.
Gold Coast tickets sold out. This lineup is actually far, far superior to the 2007 BDO (Tool and no-one else worth listening to if i recall correctly)

sonny, where should I start w/ Nick Cave? I brood sometimes, but am never very adult-ish.
WELCOME BACK, JOONYA!

Dylan- try out Dig!!! Lazarus Dig!!!, Murder Ballads, Boatman's Call, Tender Prey. Most of his records range from solid to great with few exceptions. Live he is not to be missed.
I always thought Nick Cave was some indie hipster guy. Go figure.
Brutal conflict, spiral.
Sonny, will you be at the bowl next Friday?

No LCD for me. I am travelling on business. Small chance I will be back Friday but more likely Saturday.
I pulled out Murder Ballads when I got home after talking about this. A strange but compelling record about violence and serial murder. PJ Harvey sounds great on it.
Guess my first attempt went unanswered what with all the arguing going on recentley
Anyway,i notice that theres something coming to my town in November called "Opiate - The audio and visual expeirience of Tool ". I look up it's MySpace and the video hypes "the spectacular lighting and video show inside the intimate club setting"
It's setup for a Midwest tour starting in October, and it sounds like fun. It wont be the band themselves obviously, but it'll be pretty close...plus it'll be a welcome refresher since they'll never come back to Council Bluffs since "the unholy flip-flop" hit Maynard in the chest and cost us a finale!!
Based on the evidence,is it worth it? Or will it be another "unauthorized" sub-par tribute??

There sure is a lot of Alex Grey on that page. What could the show be about?? I highly doubt Tool licensed out their material to some random southerners, and it's copyright so public performances of any of their material is illegal. So they can't play their music, they can't play their videos, what are they gonna show? Visualizations and lasers while playing some random prog rock?

I watched this videohttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xTzu8...e=mfu_in_order and as far as i can tell, they dont seem that horrible. the visuals seem better than i'd expected, an ok selection of lasers and ok sized video screen playing vauge, "trippy" figures.
they appeared to be playing 46&2, but with the copyright issue i'm not too sure. maybe there playin songs such as My Shadow, spiral out and Arizona Bay.

wow, I gotta say as far as tribute bands go..that aint half bad.
(but if they really wanted to look like the real thing the singer would have his back turned)
"Yeah Tool is fucking amazing. But theres a big chunk of their fan base that think theyve become thought provoking geniuses just from listening to them."

So what is the impact copyright in this instance? It's not like Tool doesn't play other people's music and I'm sure when they were starting out they had to have done some covers..
I realize that's not the same thing as a "tribute" band...but as long as the cover bands don't try to record and sell Tool's music without permission I don't think there is much that can be done.

So they're just a cover band with visuals? yawn. There are tons of Tool cover bands. I remember seeing a video for one that used Milkdrop2 as their visualization!
Cover bands belong in the garage, not making money by ripping off famous artists.

it doesn't matter if you're a tribute band, cover band, hits band, old school band, not-your-own-songs-band, or whatever, if you don't play your own music you shouldn't be performing in public.
Cover songs are a crowd favorite, but if that's all you play, you suck.
and I don't know about y'all (please chime in with your response), but I have zero interest in going to see a Tool cover band with mediocre visuals. I'd rather sit at home and watch a shaky fan-shot bootleg of a real Tool show.

I have mixed feelings. I would never want to see a Tool cover band, ever. What about bands at casinos though? They pretty much play classic dance tunes and I think that's fine. I enjoy it as I'm walking by or playing nearby. While I don't think they should be raking (which they're not) I do think they should get compensated for entertaining.
As far as covering one band specifically, a local casino here in AZ has Beatlemania every year and the casino is packed for a week straight. A nostalgia thing, sure, but I understand. Maybe it'll be different for us 30 years from now when it's been 20 years since we've seen Tool and would just love to hear the sound replicated live.
As far as covering one band specifically while that band is intact and still producing top notch music? Silly, stupid and a cry for attention, imho. Nobody big into music can have THAT much respect for them outside of their immediate circle friends which they had before the band formed in the first place.
/my two cents

Bands at casinos? That's background entertainment for old and/or easily amused drunk people. I don't see anything wrong with anything they play, they "just" have to please a large group of people with varied interests.
The Beatles are a very notable exception; first of all, they never played any live shows during the peak of their career, and the shows they did play were half-assed (especially towards the end of their touring career, they basically made a game out of seeing how quickly they could play their songs and get off stage). Second, they're dead, well half the band anyway, and none of them have made anything good in over 30 years. Third, they're probably the most important/influential popular music group of all time, making the covering of their songs a no-brainer if you're aiming for pop sensibilities.
However, both those examples are "party music". In other words, you want to hear hit songs at your party/event, but instead of just playing them off a CD you have an actual band. That is the point of cover bands, IMO.
But Tool cover bands (and there are a bunch of them!!) aren't birthday-party-specials. They actually host events in real clubs and purport to put on a real show. As you say, that's just silly. Especially since Tool's shows are like watching da Vinci paint, which makes a bunch of yokels playing in front of Milkdrop like watching an autistic 4 year old doodling with crayons.

Lusk and Feersum Enjinn? They aren't too bad, but I haven't really gotten into them. Funny thing is, one of my friends has been bugging me recently to give them another shot.

Here in Australia there are always cover bands gigging around in pubs.
Not my thing, but I can understand why there is a market. Take a band like U2 for example. They come down here once every 4 years and charge $200 to play a stadium where most puntrs can;t even see them.
Or you can see a cover band playing the same songs down your local pub for $10 whilst having a few drinks and a good feed.
Its all shits and giggles and half serious of course. A few mates have gigged in those cover bands, the money's not bad apparently also.
So, are there even talks of side shows in Sydney or Melbourne at least?
The only skerrick of a hint thus far is this, from Toolband.com:
Quote:
With the 2011 BIG DAY OUT dates now confirmed (and fans hoping for some Tool solo shows to be added),...
Every day I feverishly check every relevant site hoping for some info. Started to get very worried about it...
The way I see it, the most feasible option would be a Sydney sideshow on the 25th (Meaning one day off between the Gold Coast Show and it) then the 3 nights in Sydney, then 3 days off, (Probably for Maynard to get up the Hunter again like he does every time he's in NSW)... Then the BDO in Melbourne on the 30th, then a Melbourne sideshow on the 31st, then 3 days off again before Adelaide.

Agreed. Cover acts of classic defunct groups for nostalgia purposes, I guess I can see some value in that. The Beatles are a big one that comes to mind. But when musicians just put their time and resources toward dedicating themselves to doing nothing but performing another contemporary band's songs, even down to mimicking their stage setups and clothing... it just seems like a waste of talent. You can just go on Youtube and look up millions of shitty bar performances by ''A PERFECT PUSCIFER TOOL'' or whatever. Its cringeworthy.
Anyway, hope the BDO crowd gets some sideshows. I can't gush enough about what a great set the summer minitour was.
Lusk and Feersum Enjinn? They aren't too bad, but I haven't really gotten into them. Funny thing is, one of my friends has been bugging me recently to give them another shot.
Does anybody remember the camera policy/enforcement for APC? Is it as Nazi-esque as Tool or no? I think I could get some pretty good pics due to the intimacy of the venue but damn sure don't want to get kicked out.
