as annoying as all the new threads either lauding vicarious as the best song of the year or condemning it as a monumental step backwards, i went back and read our good friend Kabir's review.
i found this snippet to be entirely appropriate:
(about half-way through the album)
"To this point, I had noticed many little sprinkles from previous albums, callbacks to other themes and other progressions, perhaps tying these new tracks sonically and thematically to their older siblings. I continued to notice them throughout the record. Allusions to various songs kept appearing, though I rapidly lost track of where they all were. It will be fun to go through again and hear them, before you stop thinking of them as allusions to old songs and start thinking of them as parts of new ones. "
the point?... our reactions, good or bad....our comparisons, just or unjust are extremely premature. we dont even have the entire album yet and some have already decided tool are losing their edge...that maynard is "too old" and "losing his tool voice" and a whole other helping of horseshit...
and we all wonder why the band is so reluctant to release information and music to us as soon as we want it.

as a producer of Drum n bass, dub, and breakbeats... I can personally tell you, sampling old breaks, etc work like a charm.

is there a chance you could PM the Kabir review? That would help alot. As far as youre post goes. I entirely agree with you. People who rant on how Nard is losing his Symbiotically dark voice have no ground to stand on when judging what they (tool) is going to throw at us with the album (in it's entirety).

honestly, if you havent learned in life yet...reviews [ read or not] will not change your opinion of the final outcome.
that is unless you are sheepish.

I still want to read a good review. I liked this song... but you never know, I have the ability to shift perspective and see things from another point of view, and still maintain my own... but sometimes it changes it.

I wouldn't mind seeing what Kabir had to say about the album, either. If anyone can PM me a link, that'd be great.
