Re: General Tool tour questions / discussion
Apologies for being 'off topic' but, Musicman, have you any plans to check out either (or both) of Les' NYE shows? It's a bit of a jaunt for me, and I'm starting a new job soon, but I'm hoping oh-so-badly to make it out that way. CANNOT get enough of Les (or Tool). Can't get enough of the music by some of the dudes he often tours with as well. It's cool that the Dead Kenny G's are gonna be there too. Skerik and Dillon are amaaaazing.

man, Sleeping Beauty is great. I love the long, quiet intro on the vinyl version, and then Maynard says "yeaaaah bitch" and then the heavy part kicks in. Good stuff.

I've been thinking of going, but in all honesty I probably won't. Maybe because it's in Oakland? I don't know. I saw his NYE shows in 2001, 2002, and 2005 and they were all amazing.
If you're interested in going, just go, the shows are gonna be awesome. If I wasn't in such a monetary pit and I had someone to go with, I'd definitely hit up both nights.

Re: General Tool tour questions / discussion
Looks like a neat venue. Yeah, I'd love to be able to make it out there, but it's a long trek for me. Talkin' of long treks, here's my wishlist for Bonnaroo next year:
Radiohead
Tool
Les Claypool (at least one show/band)
For staters anyhow.

fairly off topic, but i just found out that the mars volta and modest mouse are gonna be playin a halloween festival right in my area next year. i know it's a loong ways away but i'm already pretty excited, i love modest mouse and the mars volta are pretty nice, too.
I would love to be a fly on the wall in the loft where the magic is being formed. It would be nice to eventually see some initial brainstorming/jamming or studio footage during the production of recent albums. Perhaps after they retire we'll get some type of dvd with live content and behind the scenes footage...

You know, I've been meaning to go for years, but no one else wanted to go with me. They all wanted to get drunk downtown and watch shit blow up (Which, if aliens invaded at that very moment, what would they think of us?). It's in Oakland this year, eh? Guess he wanted to switch it up, but the Fox is real nice-like. Although, walking onto the Oakland streets afterwards on NYE might be fairly interesting haha
If he's playing with the saxophonist, it's a great show, definitely try to make it out. Avante-garde in the strictest definition.
I am as well in a money pit (Recent college graduatism can be so fun), but I'd love to get there by some miracle. APC too, but, you know, the economy, socialism, Kenya, yadda yadda... :)

Very much agreed with everything you said, musicman. Except that I've only ever spent a total of three days in the Bay Area (Outside Lands '08), so I can't speak for Oakland. Well, technically I did drive through it on the Saturday night of that weekend, following some psilocybin, following Primus and Petty, when heading northward. Aaaanyway. I've read your blog a couple of times dude, and it's good!
I get the feeling that there's a lot of sweet (or at least semi-sweet) Tool jams that we may never hear, them being the perfectionists that they are. So that in sense, I can kind of concur with the "fly on the wall" sentiment.

1) Did you see Radiohead? I heard the sound cut out twice, but still, it's Radiohead. Beck was also there that year, correct? If so, that's a helluva line up.
2) Link to blog please, musicman. I love getting bitter about possibly never hearing my favorite songs again =)

Thank you kindly for the words. Haven't had a chance to write anything on it in awhile. Been busy pulling grad school apps together (More writing)!
Driving through Oakland on shrooms is definitely the way to get down with the O-Town.

Yeah, the sound did cut out a few times if I remember correctly. Much more satisfying when it happened to Linkin' Park at Epicenter. Would have been rad for a Tool show with the lasers in the fog, subtly screaming in over the park. Eat your heart out, Jerry Garcia.
I gots a link in my signaturez! Or did you mean, to link, as in write about any of this?

Re: General Tool tour questions / discussion
Yeah, and the sound cut out the following night during Petty's set as well. They took a five minute break. I guess the organizers underestimated the power requirements. It was also kind of poorly run how the second last band of the night finished maybe five minutes before the headliner, a good half mile away from the main stage. Not nearly epicly run as Bonnaroo. Such a cool setting though.
Radiohead in Auburn, WA at the White River Ampitheater that week was soooo epic. I'd love to see Tool there.

Just found out I'll be seeing Shpongle live twice within a fortnight of seeing Tool either 3 (or hopefully 4) times.
Good lord, what a few weeks that will be.
Confirmed, Brisbane at the Entertainment Center on the 24th, and Melbourne at the Myer Bowl on the 2nd.
Looks like I'll do Brisbane, then.
Sigh. I guess the fact that there are now two BDO gigs in Sydney ruled out the chance of a side show there. So we bought 4 tickets to the 27 Jan gig. I was really disappointed that Tool weren't doing a side show but now I am getting excited about the BDO line-up. We are pretty keen to see deftones, Iggy Pop and Birds of Tokyo, not to mention Tool!
Do you think that there might be any chance of Maynard linking up with deftones and singing the passenger?
Looks like it's further debt for me then, if they decide to play in Melbourne or anywhere else.
I know they have ruled out syd sideshow but if BDO syd 2 gets closer to selling out the may do one in syd? ..............they better :) If they dont I will be absolutely shattered, hate the BDO!!! Sideshows only :)

thats awesome, is the shpongle live, or a dj set tho?
I could be wrong, but I remember reading somewhere that Maynard and Chino don't get on any more...
Massive shame if true.
A friend was at one of the Euro summer festivals in 07 that had both Tool and Deftones on the bill and was massively disappointed when they didn't play it.
On the other hand, Deftones have been playing it again recently, another friend just got back from the US, and saw them over there, and Chino did it onstage with Tim from Rise Against...
Certainly, Maynard seems to be open to these sort of things on the BDO. They got Serj from SOAD onstage on the Auckland BDO date in 2007 to do Sober.
Anyway, here's hoping...

Big Day Out promoters have conclusively stated there will be no more Tool headline shows in 2 seperate press releases now.
Don't get your hopes up.

I'll be going to Melbourne. Being in Adelaide i don't think lining up is really an option, so I'll be trying via phone and online. Don't have high hopes though, link in 2007 I reckon this will see out in minutes, and there's even more pressure on ticket sales now that Sydney ain't happening.
I think paying a scalper in Ebay is probably in my future....

Yeah, for the 2007 shows, my partner and I queued up from about 7pm the night before. We were 3rd and 4th in line, I got our Sydney tickets, she got our Melbourne tickets.
No reason why you can't queue up in front of a ticketmaster in Adelaide, though?
(I'm just glad the BEC goes through Ticketek... So much better then Ticketmaster, and a lot more outlets in Sydney)
I'd recommend it. As you probably know, the Myer Bowl has a small seated area at the front, and the vast bulk of the tickets are standing at the rear.
Sitting in the front would be probably the best possible and most intimate Tool experience you could have in Australia, but unless you were front of a queue, I'd say those 2000 or so tickets would be gone in seconds and you'd have to watch from the standing area.
(Still awesome from back there, that where I was in 07, but couldn't help but be envious of those in front of me all show)
Also, to get prime positions in the standing area, you have to arrive at the venue very early (We got there at lunchtime to ensure being right on the barricade) whereas with the sitting, rock up half an hour before. Guess thats the trade-off, queuing now or on show day!

...And a full world tour behind it one would expect.
:)
To be honest, I'm still not sure what the logic behind Tool coming to Australia this summer is, but I'm not complaining!
(I actually heard from a guy who is usually a very good source about Tool 2 weeks before the BDO announcement, but laughed at him and said "no chance, sounds like APC's going to take up Maynard's time until the next album...")
And of course Tool is embarking on a 2012 world tour. Who's going to be at the December 21st show?

Never been happier to be wrong in my life.
Dude you're crazy tool is tour AU in the winter.
But on a serious note major bummer on the next album being a full year away. I'm sure it'll be sick though.
