So my friends and I were hotboxing in my room and my friend was sitting below my A Perfect Circle poster. She turned to me and said, "Hey, I was watching MTV and saw that guy. They were doing an interview on the lead singer of A Perfect Circle and Tool."

Quickly interested, I inquired further about it and was surprised when she said he was dressed in expensive, trendy apparel.

"He was wearing--like--a prada jacket, sunglasses...the stuff he wore looked pretty expensive." She further told me.

"So he turned materialistic?"

"yeah," she further claimed, "he said he didn't like that image any more. It was persona his fans liked. He appreciates life more."

I couldn't believe it. And I asked her, "So he sold out?"

"Basically...yeah."

well, she said that he stated that he didnt like the image he had, but his fans did. he is wearign this stuff because that is what APC fans want to see.

you can imagine that when tool's next cd comes out, he wont be wearing that shit anymore. because he will then be doing what tool fans expect.

sure, he may be selling out, but i think of it as he is selling out to his fans. currently APC is on tour and in the spotlight, and tool isnt. right now he is appeasing fans of his current band.

Everybody saying that Maynard has sold out is ignoring what the song means in the first place. He's been quoted as saying that we're all in this commercialist society together, and we have to do what we can to get by. Selling out is more of a complex concept than you understand. It involves more than doing what you can to get your album sold.

Doing commercials for Pepsi is selling out. Performing at any MTV award show is selling out. Wearing a nice jacket because you can afford to? Don't be so ignorant, it's just clothing. More importantly, Hooker with a Penis is not so much about whether or not Tool has sold out, but rather what kind of selling out they have chosen. Ultimately, the lyrics state that they have sold their souls to us, their audience. "I sold my soul to sell a record, dipshit, now you bought one." If the soul was traded for a record, then we can say that from that point in the song, the soul=a record. When later someone buys the record, we can assume that it is simply a stand in for the soul. It is kind of a positive thing. I recommend looking at the post titled hooker with happiness. I think it did a good job of approaching the topic.

And shame on you, radmanics. More Tool is always a good thing.

Let me just give a definition of what i consider "selling out," first of all.
Id hafta disagree with Cyanide, there is a such thing as selling out, in this context anyway. Many people relate it to money though, which is in my personal opinion wrong.
As i see it, it's when youve stopped playing music for the love of it and for the money, the difference between inspiriation and ambition, work and play almost (though i realize in many ways making good music can be a whole lot of work, i mean a mental work, an obligation). Basically when somebody uses their current musical status to allow themselves to just pump out pure shit, shitty record after shitty record of worthless, uninspired "music" though i feel nothing is really music unless its expressive. If not id probably be listening to three blind mice and loving it.

He could walk around with a Nike swoosh tattooed on his forehead, i wouldnt give a fuck. in fact, all the more power to him if that were the case for forcing people to question exactly what selling out is.
