I’d take it as a sign of Maynard enjoying the tour enough to have some fun and be a bit goofy.
I don’t think anyone in the band saw it as disrespectful.

hey junior, just wondering how TOOL has kept other bands from covers? I know about the Aaron Lewis ‘Sober’ cover, but I was reading about the Vibrators ‘Nothing Else Matters’ cover and there was no mention of getting permission from Metallica.

Not sure, but I don't think bands have to give any special permission. The band doing the cover probably has to pay ASCAP or BMI fees. I don't know if that just pertains to recorded versions, or not.
The band opening for Tool at the moment (Brass Against) does 3 Tool covers each night.

Has the crowd enjoyed them as an opener? I always like their videos and covers, but it's kinda weird to me having a band playing several of the songs of the band they are opening for.

They seem to get a good reception. I only watched them the first night, though.

Most concert attendees are pretty casual music fans. i'd dare say the majority of the audience would tolerate a covers band more than something as abrasive as Author & Punisher.

I’ve heard this, but they do use cameras to project images onto the screens... maybe that’s what they’re seeing and assuming? Like during Danny’s solo they have live video of him through a kaleidoscope filter. I think the cameras are there just for the production, and maybe so these musical athletes can “review film” and work on it.

Don’t hold your breath for live blue ray.
