Where you have "Benched along with patience and reason." I hear "Bet your love and patience and reason."

I really really hear benched here now, especialyl with the new clearer leak. And it logically flows. Angels on the sideline ... as in football. On the bench.

Might he be saying "Over lies, over blood, over air."?

"Lies" makes more sense to me, yet I have trouble hearing it in the song.

If it is "over lie", what exactly does that mean?

I do like the "right in two/into" double entendre.

Ive always thought I heard the first line as "Angels on the sideline.... puzzled at our news.... According to the rest of the lyrics it doesnt seem like the Angels are amused at anything at all.... Kind of makes more sense that way to me as well, any thoughts or did i waste my first post looking like a complete and utter fool :)

I agree with the reasoning behind this word choice, but no matter how many times to listen to it, I can't hear anything other than 'amused' I'm afraid.

It means pretty much the same thing, 'over lie' would simply be saying 'over a lie' using the lyricists old trick of omitting a word that is implied. 'Over a lie' or 'over lies' - six of one, half a dozen the other really.

That's my take anyway.

I haven't heard the 'clearer leak' so I guess I can't say much. I just don't know what "benched along" is supposed to mean. I've never heard that phrase before.

I can understand a bench/sideline parallel, however.

I have some slight changes to what I think the lyrics are, like for instance I'm not buying the "Cutting our love right in two". I just don't hear that honestly it doesn't go with the feeling or theme of the song to me nor does it sound like something Maynard would write IMHO. I'm not completely convinced of "Cut it right all, right in two" either, but that's what it sounds like to me, more than the above mentioned anyways. I think its probably something so easy and obvious, but I just can't put my finger on it.

Sorry I can't go along with that. It doesn't sound like that to me, it doesn't make much sense really, it sounds like whoever thought of that was really reaching trying to make a connection between that and sidelines, and again IMHO it doesn't sound like something Maynard would write.

Also, listen closely - I'm almost positive he's saying the word "on" just before "heaven" and that the "t" sound is the end of the previous word. Listen for the "n" sound just before "heaven", that's why I'm almost positive the word before isn't "to", the "n" sound is very prominent.

Well I taKe "lift an eye to heaven" to mean the angels are talking about us "monkeys" not looking up to god, heaven etc (praying, believing in god) even though we know we are mortal (our fleeting time here on earth), our sins (monkey killing monkey etc) will count against us when we die and the angels are credulous at the fact that we've been made aware of this fact yet we still choose to not believe in god, and/or ignore god/heaven while we're here during this short time on earth. Ok you got me all philosophical now.

Of course, he may not be saying lift an eye to heaven at all...but I don't think I hear the "lift a night on heaven" either. And the "n" sound you're hearing could be the "n" sound in the word "an" that I hear in the lyric "lift an eye to heaven".

The "n" sound is immediately before "heaven" - tagged on the end of "to" in your version I quoted.

I disagree. Maynard is saying that patience and reason have been put to the side, much like the angels, in this current world. The angels have been told to wait their turn (what benched basically means) the same way reason and patience must wait their turn. I think it works, and that's what I hear, so I'm gonna put my support behind this interpretation.

Also, in the context of the story, the angels mention that God has given humans reason. It seems strange for the angels to point this out if they, too, have been given reason, which 'Been so long with patience and reason' seems to imply.

But I definitely do think 'Lift an eye to heaven' and completely agree with your interpretation of what that line means.

In the context of physiology and the divine imagery in the song, God would be the one who would make a claw.

I mean, I can hear how one might hear that - I just think logistically it doesn't fit the song.

I don't know, but I bet my pants that it's not "Club". Maybe clue? Does it fit? I don't know², but it's the way that sounds.

I've been listening for the "benched" lyric that stev and DJ07 thinks it is, and since it's the "Be" sound to start out with, it could be Benched or been...but I'm having a tough time figuring it out exactly.

How come these people that have the CD now can't post the damn lyrics and clear up this confusion?? But by the same token, I'm still having fun trying to figure them out.

The whole "lift an eye to heaven conscious..." part wasn't sounding right to me at first...but I do think that is it after further listens...makes sense too....looking to heaven and worshipping and believing in lies as opposed to believing in yourself and living your life while you're here....goes with TOOL's whole deceptively optimistic themes. I think it's "cut it all right in two" but with an echo effect that makes it sound like more syllables in the middle where he's drawing "all" out

But I could hear it both ways, it's a tough call
