Listen to the tales and romanticize
How we follow the path of the hero
Boast about the day when the rivers overrun
How we rise to the height of our halo
Listen to the tales as we all rationalize
Our way into the arms of the savior
Feigning all the trials and the tribulations
None of us have actually been there
Not like you
Ignorant fibbers in the congregation
Gather around spewing sympathy
Spare me
None of them can even hold a candle up to you
Blinded by choices hypocrites won't see
But enough about the collective Judas
Who could deny you were the one who illuminated
you're a piece of the divine.
This little light of mine,
the gift you passed on to me.
I''m gonna let it shine to guide you safely on your way.
Your way home
Ohhhh, what are they going to do when the lights go down
Without you to guide them all to Zion?
What are they going to do when the rivers overrun
Other than tremble incessantly
High is the way, but our lives are up on the ground
You are the light and the way, they only read about
I only pray heaven knows when to lift you out
Ten-thousand days as the fire is long enough
You're going home
You're the only one who can hold your head up high
Shake your fist at the gates saying
I have come home now
Fetch me the Spirit, the Son, and the Father
Tell them their pillar of faith has ascended
It's time now, my time now
Give me my, give me my
wings
Give me my
Give me my
Give me my wings
Heeeeey
Ohhhhhh (ohohoho)
You are a (the) light,
a (the) way
that they will only read about
Set as I am in my ways and my arrogance
Burden of proof tossed upon the believers
You were my witness, my eyes, my evidence
Judith Marie, unconditional one
Daylight dims leaving cold fluorescence
Difficult to see you in this light
Please forgive this bold suggestion
Should you see your Maker's face tonight
Look Him in the eye, look Him in the eye, and tell Him
I never lived a lie, never took a life, but surely saved one
Hallelujah, its time for you to bring me home
all contributions weighed. i cant find anything wrong with this. 100% correctitude

My take on it....... I love this song. So touching.

none of them can even hold a candle up to you
blinded by choices hyppocrites wont seek,
but not for the collective judas,
who could deny you were the one who would have made it,
your little piece of the divine,
this little light of mine
it gives your past unto me
i'm going to let it shine
to guide you safely on your way
your way home...
what are they going to do when the lights go down
without you to guide them all to zion?
what are they gonna do when the rivers overrun

high as a wave but ill rise on up off the ground

yes, just like I must be the only one to hear "...Allah knows when to lift you out"
Either that, or nobody around here has any interest in other people's suggestions, and is just posting the complete lyrics that they've worked out, that are exactly the fucking same as everybody else's...

I definitely hear "...Alllah knows when to lift you out," and, while I'd be open to the possibility that it's something else, even when trying my best to hear "God" or "Heaven" there I constantly fail. It sounds nothing like "God" and you'd be stretching to get a v in there, let alone no l's. This has come up a few times in this thread; it's a pretty big thing, I think, and I wonder why so few are addressing it.

It's heaven, not Allah.
Consider the context about wings, gates, coming home from the fire...
Let's get serious here...

Yes, but Allah is a legitimate name of god.. Maynard is likely taking a bit of artistic license, like the way he is with the line "ten thousand days in the fire..." - his mother was unlikely to have been paralysed for precisely 10,000 days, but something approximating it.
Also, don't forget that Islam, Christianity and Judaism are all Abrahamic religions, so technically, they all worship the same god. The name doesn't matter, in the grand scheme of things.

I don't care what Allah means to whom. He said "heaven", so there is no need to discuss Allah.

that's precisely what I'm debating - I'm not hearing 'heaven' - I'm hearing something with an L sound in it.. distinctly not a V sound.
I've tried to hear Heaven and God and Angels, but nothing fits quite like Allah. I'm not saying it as a pro-islamic person, which I'm not, I'm just saying what I hear, and I'm asking people to open their minds and ears a bit, and to discuss the possibility.

Already did. When I read the lyrics along with the song, it immediately jumped out at me, "That doesn't say God... it says heaven."

On my first attempt to transcribe these lyrics (before i discovered these forums yesterday) i heard Allah, there was no heaven to be heard in there until i saw it mentioned here.

So of course I was excited when Vicarious came out, but as soon as I heard this song, it grabbed me in a big way. I've been listening to it to the exclusion of the others that were played on the radio. Anyway, I've been reading people's lyric posts and I agree with all of what praefector assembled except for the following:
What I hear is in (parens), what was originally posted is in [blocks].
1.) Who could deny you were the one who illuminated / (the idle piece) [you're a piece] of the divine.
2.) Ten-thousand days (in) [as] the fire is long enough
3.) You are (a) [the] light / (a) [the] way / that they will only read about
I could easily be wrong, but no more likely so than any of us...

Agreed, this song is one of the best in the "album", it makes we tear up everytime I hear it, this could be their "stairway to heaven", anyone else think so?

You were the light and the way... they'll only read about.
Who could deny you were the one who illuminated my little piece of the divine.
Ten thousand days in the fire is long enough.
These need to be fixed immediately.

First I must say, the lyrics seem to be complete as of LiLponyAddictions last post. Good job everyone :) I've been wondering about a lot of things in this songs.
As far as the allah vs heaven, there is no way he is saying allah because the vowel sounds are completely wrong for him to be saying allah. The V sound is easily lost amongst the symbols Danny is hitting while Maynard is singing this line (due to the v sound being close in signal range to that of a symbol hit) but the vowel sounds he's singing are definitely "eh" and "eh" not "ah" and "ah" so unless Maynard doesn't know how to pronounce "allah" he's saying "heaven"

there's also no final 'en' sound, in what I'm hearing - to get "Heaven" in there, you need to run the two words together, and drop the leading H, leaving something that would sound like "I only pray effer knows.."
Possibly this is a deliberate move on Maynard's part?

Agreed, but personally I think it would be 'the one who illuminated, my little piece of the divine' (ie Judith did not illuminate MJK's piece of the divine, but rather she generally illuminated and was also his little piece of the divine)
And as far as 'heaven' goes, the 'en' from heaven blends into the n from 'knows', I think that's why you're not hearing it.

There's very definately another hard 'B' or 'D' sound before "the collective" - so I'm going to have to go back to the earlier "but enough about the collective Judas"
I'm also dubious about the "..you were the one who would have made it" but the only thing I can think of to fit what I hear there is "..the one who would only made it" - which is largely nonsensical, and I'm just thowing that out there for further discussion.
"your little piece of the divine" could almost be "you'll have a piece of the divine" - or even, "you'll eat a piece of the divine" - again, nonsensical, discussion point only.

I'm about 99% certain that this is "High is the way, but our lives are upon the ground"
I've already been over the Heaven/Allah bit before... "10000 days.." should really be written long-hand though :P

"Set as I am, in my ways and my arrogance, burden of proof tossed upon the believers" is what I think it is.
Why burden of proof?
Well, I think Maynard is talking about the logical fallacy, wherin you believe that something does something because it cannot be proven that it does not.
Think of that Simpons Episode where Lisa offers Homer an "anti-tiger rock" - Homer asks if it works or not, to which Lisa replies along the lines of "do you see any tigers around here?" - naturally, Homer stupidly offers to buy the rock from Lisa.
Maynard is continually "tossing" the burden of proof onto the followers of christianity - the "believers". He is asking them to prove that god exists, and when they can only say that it can't be proven that he/she/it doesn't exist, therin lies the 'burden of proof'

Sorry, this one's a grammatical issue, largely.
"Maker's" - Singular, possessive.
"look em in the eye" - 'em' short for them. Plural.
That really needs to be "look him in the eye.." to make even the slightest bit of sense.

I agree on this part.
Lots of good work here, but some bits were bugging me so I took a crack at it (while also fixing the structure/punctuation/capitalization, so it doesn't grate on my "that's-bad-English" nerve...)

Listen to the tales as we all rationalize
Our way into the arms of the Savior
Feigning all the trials and the tribulations
None of us have actually been there
Not like you
Ignorant fibbers in the congregation
Gather around spewing sympathy
Spare me
None of them can even hold a candle up to you
Blinded by choice
These hypocrites won't see
But nothing - Not the collective Judas
Who could deny?
You were the one who illuminated
Your little piece of the divine
This little light of mine
The gift you passed onto me
I'm going to let it shine
To guide you safely on your way
Your way home...
What are they going to do when the lights go down
Without you to guide them all to Zion?
What are they gonna do when the rivers overrun
Other than tremble incessantly ?
High is the way
But our eyes are upon the ground
You were the Light and the Way
That they'll only read about
I only pray Heaven knows
When to lift you out
10,000 days in the fire is long enough
You're going home
You're the only one who can hold your head up high
Shake your fist at the gates sayin'
"I have come home now
Fetch me the spirit, the son and the father
Tell them their pillar of faith has ascended
It's time now, my time now, give me my, give me my wings!"
Give me my
Give me my
Give me my
Give me my
Give me my wings....
You are the Light, the Way
That they will only read about
Set as I am in my ways and my arrogance
Burning all through, tossed upon the believers
You were my witness, my eyes, my evidence
Judith Marie, unconditional one
Daylight dims, leaving cold flouresence
Difficult to see you in this light
Please forgive this, bold suggestion
Should you see your Maker's face tonight
Look 'im in the eye
Look 'im in the eye
And tell Him
I never lived a lie
Never took a life
But surely saved one
Hallelujah
It's time for you to bring me home

I know some of that is different than what anyone else here has posted. I'm confident this version, while not perfect, is closer to what's there both in matching the syllables and in following the story of an unbeliever coming to understand how someone can have faith and realizing that even if he doesn't agree with her that most others who profess to have such faith fall so far short of the mark that he decides to take some of her faith upon himself to ensure she gets to Heaven.
When you look at it that way, it makes a whole lot of sense that the song condemning hypocrites comes right after it, now doesn't it?

Unless I missed something I added, the corrections are in bold.
It is illuminated for the simple reason of the sound and logical cohesion to the next paragraph discussing light. The little piece of the divine she passed onto him is what he's giving back to guide her through...
And it's FEIGNING not failing. Feigning as in faking trials and tribulations, just as the context talks of rationalizing our way into the arms of the Savior. It's the same shit.
And to whoever suggested that this song is about Lucifer...
That's clearly the stupidest thing to cross my line of sight.
Father? Son? Spirit? Divine? Heaven? Hallelujah? Wings? High is the way? Not lying? Saving lives? Your Maker? Pillar of faith ascending? Leaving the fire 10,000 days later? Going to the arms of our Savior?
Cmon, man... I know some of you like to portray Tool or Maynard as a Satanic and religion hater.
Watch, now it'll be considered cool around here to be religious.

I disagree. Listen to it again. For it to be "choices" he has to be saying "choy-sieze" with a long "e" sound.
Either way the context is pretty much the same. However, the long "e" sound is very clear to me there.

Absolutely. Can't believe I missed that one.
But he's not saying "my piece" he's saying her faith is what made her divine. HER light showed HER the way to God. Or, more accurately, show her the way to be good and pure no matter if there is a God or not.
I added your corrections to my post above.

Absolutely. I thought I had chaged that.

You know... I listened to it a second ago, and it could also very easily (and probably more so) be "my idle peice of the divine..." where my and idle blend together as one word.
It sounds more legitimate based on the enunciation alone.
It fits perhaps better in context too...
