i know i've said this before, and many others here have as well...
but i'm going to try my absolute best NOT to check the setlist before i see them.
it's SO fucking hard, but i think it might be best.
anyone else with me??
not me. I thought about it but that's too hard. Last year I was refreshing several pages on shows I didnt go to so i could see the set lists as they came in. This year I am spending a month without listening to any live tool at all. Only studio recordings until I see them in denver. not enough self control to avoid the setlists and concert reviews, especially after that RS article.
I'm thinking that if they happen to play anything new that resembles a full song, I'm not going to listen to any bootlegs of it. I'm not going to any of the shows this summer, so I think I would rather wait until the upcoming album is released before I hear any new material. I don't think anything new will be played anyway...
I can’t imagine Tool would allow the potential for shitty internet recordings of a new song before the new album is even released…
Danny Carey agrees with this. On page 18 of the special Tool addition of Revolver magazine he says:
"We had been playing those songs live for a year, which is a luxury we don't have anymore. Now we have to keep everything secret, because we don't want to have people hearing our songs on bootlegs all over the Internet. I wish we could still go out and play our songs live before we track them, but those days are gone."

Personally I have looked at sets and I have not looked at sets for shows and not looking at sets is definitely the way to go... Try to avoid those late night drunk internet surf sessions though... Those will have you looking at sets in 3 minutes...
me: Im just going to check my email and look at espn.com
my brain: just go to the home page of toolband/toolshed and see if there is any news.
me: i shouldnt do that.
my brain: we wont look at the setlists.
me: ok
Next thing i know : Jambi, Stinkfist, 46 & 2, etc.
Flying into a tool show blind is the best. It makes for an interesting experience especially on psychedelics.
these guys are all talented enough to do a jam session on stage i think. I know it's not really their style, but that sure would be cool as hell. Even if it was just a 30 second jam that they'd rehearsed before. Hell at this point, i think all of us that went to more than a couple shows last year just crave anything different, but anything is better than nothing still.
It kind of pisses me off that the band is so anal about not having new-material leaked via live bootleg. Its their music so they can do what they choose of course, I just think that it wouldnt be the end of the world if they played new songs and internet bootlegs leaked. Would anyone here seriously not buy the next album? I dont think anything would happen except people would be a lot more excited and the hype would be enormous.
Radiohead - a band that is at least as obsessed with the subtlety of their own sound as tool - has done this before and I think its awesome. All it did was add the the mystique of the unreleased tracks.

at least you guys can care about the setlists. im still foolishly hoping they go outside the country and then return to the east coast. boston, NH, NY? ill endure the swamps of jersey again.
Tool will not play anything new on this tour. If you think they're going to, you're an idiot. It will be a miracle if they even change the fucking setlist.
There will be one new song, only because it's been 4 years. TOOL is not a jamband. It is impossible to "jam" with one person playing 5/8 time, another playing 7/8 time, only to end syncopated at 12/8 time, or 9/8 time, and have it sound good. Someone is bound to fall off the time sig wagon.

Eh, I think they can do it. When we say "jam" we think improvisation, what I am imagining would be more rehearsed. More like a drawn-out, instrumental break-down. We have heard the band do this kind of thing before.

i have it on good authority that they will indeed be recording shows for an upcoming live dvd
Yes, They should record these shows. Then they can put it on the shelf next to the Perfect Circle and Lateralus Recordings they did. But never released
"Yeah Tool is fucking amazing. But there’s a big chunk of their fan base that think they’ve become thought provoking geniuses just from listening to them."
