Re: General Tool tour questions / discussion

I'm truly shocked they added a Sac town date. It would be a crime if they didnt also at least play Lost Angels...

So I can only hit one show at RR. I always try to go to the last night of consecutive shows...

but I wonder if the first night might be the way to go...

This reminds me of a situation I had when I was the PM at a show in Arena, Pula (Croatia) in 2008. We had a very popular European act coming in one of the most beautiful venues in this part of Europe - a Roman amphitheater in a vivid Adriatic town.

The only way to get the gear inside the venue was to use several small trucks. Moreover, all the people working on site had to be extra careful because the venue is a UNESCO heritage site, and a part of it is, in fact, an anthropological museum.

Working there, I've encountered many issues which an ordinary PM probably wouldn't come across in his/her career. The rental company had to load-in very early, as the load-in was very time consuming. However, a film festival had been taking place there a day before, thus there was extremely little time to put things up. And since the amphitheater is located in a rather busy part of the town, the authorities had to block access to it, and reroute the traffic. And the best part was that the artist got stuck in Romania and barely made in time for load-in. It was a great way to build my logistics chops up.

However, the show went great. It sold out and we had nice weather (which is always an important factor at outdoor shows).

@ Junior: It was the same rental company that you worked with when Tool was in Zagreb in 2007. If I remember correctly, they provided you with the staging, P.A., and part of the lighting, right?

And do you happen to know what gear is already set up there, at Red Rocks? I'm guessing the roof and trussing are in-house.

Of course a "same old concert" in terms of Tool is still better than 99% of the stuff out there..

Re: General Tool tour questions / discussion

As disappointed as I was last year with the set list (it was identical to most of the 2007 set minus Wings/10,000 Days) I would pay to hear the same songs again at Red Rocks. I've seen Tool once at The Gorge and the setting made it that much more special. It's almost a must to see them at Red Rocks as well. Boise to Denver is 800+ miles... Do I really want to drive 1600 miles round trip?? DO I REALLY??? At least I have til Saturday to decide.

I'm driving 700 miles to a generic arena venue in New Orleans. I think you can muster the energy for an extra 100 miles for a Red Rocks show, hah.

I hope they play Red Rocks again in a couple years, and I get to go. I've never been to the venue, but it obviously looks amazing. There's just no way I can make that one work this time around. Hell New Orleans is probably a bad idea too, but fuck it....it's TOOL!

The only thing that makes me worry is that they will play the same show I drove 600 miles (round trip) for last year. If that were to happen, I would probably walk out of there with a bad taste in my mouth. Not because I spent the money, time and miles to see the same set yet again for the 3rd time in a row, but to see that they have lost their once major "cojones." I just hope for the sake of knowning they are still the bold, original and classy guys they once were, they play some different songs this time around...

I couldn't fault you there. I'd say buy the ticket Saturday so you don't have to get raped by Ebay just a few days after ticketmaster did the deed. Then you can check out the setlist and make a last minute decision. Just plan as if you're going and if the setlist ends up deflating your buzz those tickets will be very easy to sell on Craigslist (just make sure you ask for paypal transfer so you don't get burned).

Not only will you be doing your lungs a favor but those around you probably won't have a clue what you are doing. Perfect concert buddy. Just trying to help a fellow Tool fan out.

do you reckon it would still set off a metal detector?

the description on the website says it has stainless steel and copper, so i'd assume it will. i would think it'd be really hard to find a vape with no metal.

yea that was a dumbass question.

Re: General Tool tour questions / discussion

Actually from my experience I would say 9/10 concerts do NOT use metal detectors. You can expect some form of a "pat down", but metal detectors are never the norm.

It's pretty random acually. Last summer it would vary from complete insane patdown with metal detectors, to just walking in unasked without any form of security or even showing a ticket (remember bojangles, jwb?)

Put the battery in a separate pocket (just make sure it's not the same pocket you have keys or coins in). It's pretty small and with the battery and stem removed it looks like a tiny wood box. I can't imagine security giving it a second thought, at a Tool show they are usually more focued on finding cameras and recording equipment.

i guess it depends on who security is working for. if it's the state (most of the time it is) do they hand over paraphernalia over to tool?

Security for events is almost always run by private security companies hired by the venue to work the entrances/searching. The guards in no way work for the state/government, and only report to their private security company.

The police you see are also hired by the venue to stay specifically for the event. The venue will typically pay $75 per hour to the police force, and in return they provide officers to stay on the property to help out security/do whatever they want.

As far as confiscated items are concerned - you can bet that a good portion of the time the security guard does pocket the goods for themselves. Or they put it in a "bin" which the supervisors/management then keeps. Or the police get it, in which case in theory it gets "destroyed", but in reality you can bet at least sometimes it still goes into the pockets of the authorities.

You can also safely bet that none of the confiscated items end up going to Tool.

I work in the security/special events industry...so this is from my experience. At least in Canada.

I've been to a lot of nice venues, and I don't think I've ever been wanded. At least not that I can recall. Then again, America's frizzled-hair, scaredy-cat syndrome of everything even thought of as being "bad" is trickling down like Glenn Beck's ratings!

Ba-dum-dum pssh.

That was pretty funny, I wish I used the $70 I spent on the ticket to purchase a couple buckets of that delicious chicken!

It's funny you say that. I have to vehemently disagree about seeing APC over Tool, though. At the last APC show that I saw (my buddy and I had seats in a venue in Cincinnati that made it completely impossible to smoke anything), he had a splitting headache the entire show, and I remember after the show was over, both of us saying that we now realize the difference between the two bands. APC made a LOT of mistakes that night. Maybe it was because we were sober, but they were not nearly as tight a band as Tool is every time I' ve seen them live.

He was using the word "gay" in a context that corresponds most to item number 8. Calling ppl out for using the word "gay" makes u seem like a fossil - everyone knows what he meant. Its one thing if ur offended by the word, its another thing if ur just trying to be a nit picker, which is totally gay.

Let me counts the ways that, that is a silly thing to say (being nice here)

There may have been some ill feelings towards LA LA land and it's many issues, BUT It is still the birthplace of the band and where several of them make their home.

Two other points:

If MJK wrote those lyrics (and we'll assume he did) he may hate LA, but he's only 1/4 of the band.

They have played LA several times since that song was written so there is no history of ill will towards So Cal. (other than a single, rather tongue-in-cheek song.)

I would go easy on the literal interpretation of Tool lyrics. Is Stinkfist really about fistfucking?

I have a not so funny camera APC moment.

On the first tour me and my GF drove up from Naples to Orlando Florida for the show at Hard Rock Live. We went to the Islands of Adventure theme park all day and had a blast. Not wanting to go all the way back to the hotel, we went straight to the show.

I hid my little cardboard camera down my pants (I was taking pics of us on vacation - not caring about pics of APC) BUT after many rum and cokes, I decided to whip it out and get a snap from about four rows back, dead center in front of May May.

I didn't realize that while it was in my pocket the button for flash was pushed in. In my buzzed state, I didn't realize the flash was on...

Well needless to say, when Captain Cranky Pants saw my flash go off, he freaked. He stopped singing - I think it was the David Bowie cover - and stopped the band. He pointed right at me and said "I hope you got some good pictures guy" or something like that.

He was pissed, and sang the rest of the song with his back turned.

Security waded into the pit and tried to grab me and drag me out for a search.

Not wanting to lose my vaction pics (and some we took at the hotel :) ) I handed the camera to a total stranger, and said I'll be right back - with a beer.

When I was pulled free by security they couldn't find the camera and I told them I had dropped it when Maynard started yelling at me. No camera so they didn't kick me out.

I went back with a beer and got my camera back

but WHAT A BUZZKILL!

Re: General Tool tour questions / discussion

Anybody know why they would have seating on the floor for this show? Ill be at winnipeg but was wondering this cause I have one of these supposed "floor seats" sent an email to the persons in charge of the venue and got a canned response back about how its up to the artist and their camp as to how to set the place up. Winnipeg floor tix were 15 bucks more than the other canadian shows and they're all general admission floor. Something seems fishy about it.

Only 2 shows at the mts center I've seen that had the chairs on the floor were doors of the 21st century and ozzy/rob zombie. Zombie made fun of us for it

I'll have to go with 2.

Those are some bright n' gay lighters!

I debated using the word, and I know I shouldn't. But, it seemed too...perfect.

On the gay side, irony is still alive and well.

Think that's No. 1 ;)

Don't think its that cause I've seen bands like lamb of god slayer megadeth there and they never put seats out. Assigned seats pretty much kill the social aspect of having an open floor to roam and meet/see people before and in between sets. Like I wanna be searching for seat 22 in the dark right before they're about to go on.

I'm fairly sure anybody with an "S" and an "F" in their screen name has a pretty good idea about the many meanings to the word "gay".

Burnnnnnnnnnnn.

I think he is referring to the fact that San Francisco is where Stonewall happened. And presumably a lot of gay people live there. Tough razz...

But back to Tool, I want to pose a general question: Has Tool ever gone on a Tour BEFORE the imminent release of a new album, as is the case in this instance.

Also does anyone (OGTs presumably) remember Tool EVER debuting new material before releasing an album.
