How can any of you put APC above Undertow???? That is insane! They reek of mediocrity. Our kid's generation will still be listening to Tool the way we do Black Sabbath or Led Zeppelin (it's timeless). But they will listen to APC the way we listen to REO Speedwagon (with great indifference if at all).

3. Salival 9.7/10 ~ Third Eye/Pushit (live) = amazing, No Quarter!, Merkaba!
4. Undertow 9.5/10
5. Mer De Noms 9.3/10
6. 10 000 Days 8.8/10 ~ great music, but the lyrics (not vocals...which are good) are worse than anything above it.
7. Opiate 8.7/10 ~ too short, a few weak songs, opiate the song is amazing tho.
8. 13th Step 8.5/10 ~ not as good as whats above it?
9. eMotive 7.0/10 ~ only because passive is amazing. and imagine is a good cover. all the politics are fucking stupid.

Except for Imagine, People are People, and Freedom of Choice, I think eMotive is acceptable.
The only thing I like on Mer de Noms is The Hollow and a lot of it is completely laughable. I think of it like a lost The Smashing Pumpkins album. Which is a bad thing.
The only thing I like on Opiate is the title track.

these arent separated by much more than mere degrees however.. still really love thirteenth and undertow, and its hard to distinguish between aenima/lateralus/10000 days in terms of which one's better..all have their mind-blowing elements. i imagine 10k days is at the top since thats the one i listened to last. and mer de noms will always be one of my favorite albums.

Undertow/Opiate (I normally throw these in the same bracket.)
Salival (Some useless junk on here, Pushit and No Quarter are breath taking)

The problem I have with 10,000 days is that it reminds me too much of APC. While APC is okay, Tool beats the crap out of them. I want my music either really deep or completely mindless. 10,000 days splits the difference. That's bad. Jack of all trades--master of nothing.

had to swim thru 5 pages of 'hoax' and 'T00L is dead2me' threads for finding this... read this a few days ago... and had to actually sit and think about how i'd rate Maynard's work w. both Tool and APC (ive listened very briefly like 2 Pucifier songs but not enuff to comment) ...

a brief and boring history...I only got into Tool in like 2000 as i was making my transition from listening mainly to Rap ... a lot of my friends spoke of Tool in high regard ... but the 1st thing i really ever remember hearing from MJK was 'Judith' ... the station mentioned it was from the lead singer of Tool w/ his new band since Tool was no longer together ... and i was blown away... "ur such and inspiration for the ways that i will never ever choose to be" was maybe the greatest opening line I'd ever heard to any song... the radio station was equally impressed and replayed the track right away... Ive been hooked on MJK ever since.

I then went out and bought the Tool albums since APC wasnt out yet... i was skeptical at 1st simply b/c i expected like this heavy, screaming, death metal type band.. boy was I wrong. Ænima just hit me right away.... i really didn't pay too much attention to the 'filler' segues... but the songs that were actually there were amazing.... it also took me a long time to truly 'get' the more epic songs like PushIt and 3rd Eye ... but suffice to say that once i did they became 2 of my favorite songs of all time.. PushIt especially and slowly but surely through the next 5 or so yrs Ænima has became my all time fave album ...

I won't ramble too much longer but I must say that Mer De Noms took some time to appreciate as well... I was spoiled by Ænima and wanted Tool instead i got this completely different beast in APC ... but Mer de Noms also contains some of the most beautiful songs ever.. i.e. Orestes and 3 Libras jump right into the forefront... so w/out much further ado... lol... my list:

#1: Ænima - Like I said my fave ever. Doubtful it will ever be topped... but Im keeping my fingers crossed
#2: Mer de Noms - hauntingly beautiful and simple at the same time
#3: Lateralus - 5 yrs later, and i still can't quantify this album completely yet... rememeber this was my 1st T00L album that i was anticipating and had any built in expectations for... tough to say it dissappointed... but i think from my end... lateralus was too complicated for its own good....
#4: 13th Step - missing the classics that MdN had but quite good
#5: Salival - PushIt (live) is maybe my fave song of all time and coupled w/ No Quarter make it worth the price of admission but hard to quantify w/ only 2 or 3 'real' songs
#6: Emotive - forgettable minus the excellent 'Passive' which is great... but its also tough to bash MJK for this, b/c at it's core its simply a politically fueled cover album

*** haven't heard 10,000 Days... im resisting the urge... i've waited 5 yrs... wats another 2 weeks (now 6 days)!!! I like Vicarious a lot and am expectiong 10k days to fall somewhere near Lateralus... i cant see it being better than Ænima but it could surpass Lateralus!!!

^^^^^ hows about I don't forget Undertow & Opiate in my rush to complete that bastard of a post... lol... just snuggle Undertow in there at #4 b/w Lateralus and 13th Step and toss Opiate in after Salival before EMotive. :ashamed:

This is ridiculous, you guys are all rating Lateralus entirely too high, it's NOT THAT GREAT.
here's my list :

Ænima : It's the best, they'll never return to this peak.
10,000 days : This album is probably one of their best.
Undertow : Sober, anyone ? Cries of the Carrots ? Truly great.
Lateralus : Intricate but ultimately not as good as the others.
Mer De Noms : Has some really great songs, but not as good as Tool.
Opiate : It's an EP, and it doesn't have the brilliance of the other stuff.
Thirteenth Step : Better produced than Mer De Noms, but dont' like the direction.
Emotive : Lets just forget about this abortion.

Aenima > 10,000 Days > Lateralus > Undertow > Salival > Opiate
