yepp...its kinda hard to say that but there were indeed some scenes which did not seem as well worked out as some others (i am not a specialist on 3d-stuff, its just an impression)
i think it is a great video- very experimental and i don`t know what to make of it...
if this counts as a video-review: i really love the cover-artwork and the video-stills!!!!
all in all: if you want to support some great artists (and there were pretty much of hem involved) buy it...if your expectations are not too far out i promise you won`t regret it!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: Review the 'Vicarious' Official Music Video Here

the video, minus the alex grey shite, was very good. reassuring, in a really great way.
the alex grey-related shite is shit.
tool need to get the fuck away from that aesthetic.
it worked amazingly well for lateralus; now move on.
the beginning of the video, which seems a bit more reflective of adam jones mind/work, was really amazing. much better quality than i expected, and totally convinces me tool should do a longform animated music video.

now i've got a lot of confidence in 3d's abilities to represent the more visceral nature of tool's aesthetic.

Agreed. The wheels fell off that wagon once he found the "net of being." Didn't work very well. Other than that, I thought it was very well done. Can't wait to see it on a flat screen with 5.1.

I agree with that. But I still think I wanted to see one more video with alex grey artwork. They have explored the Net of being in 3D, it looked good I thought. I guess I hope that after this one they move away from that aesthetic.

What about the three tentacled thingo... what was that?

Re: Review the 'Vicarious' Official Music Video Here

I'm a fan of tool since just before AEnima. I've liked everything they've done. even 10,000 days. I loved this video. I like the Alex Grey stuff, and the darker stuff in the first half. I love the net of being, and seeing it in this 3d portrayal is exactly what I've wanted to see since I saw the large mural version.

I wouldn't say this is my favorite Tool video, but it's up there. like the OP said..not the worst, not the best.

cool! i have to try it....after all: i like alex grey alot.....and i like the visuals...it only appeared to me that for some sequences they hadn`t enough time or something...
and i`d like to see a whole long tool-movie...but with that perfectionism of adam it seems almost impossible ;)

I think it's great and done with a lot of care. I don't like ranking best or worst. One thing though, this cost a good amount to produce so I hope enough people buy it to justify making more full length stuff in the future.

Re: Review the 'Vicarious' Official Music Video Here

Guess I'll be the oddball out and get flamed. I thought it sucked, personally. This is probably my least favorite Tool music video after Hush and Sober. Things took way, way too long to happen, and the whole transcendent ending thing was done before with Parabola. The only part I enjoyed was the animation of the Alex Grey work.

Is it just me, or could that scene be modified to loop and make a really kickass screensaver?

Re: Review the 'Vicarious' Official Music Video Here

i liked it apart from a pretty major gripe

the main dude. the humanoid. looked bad. i realize its the figure in the lateralus booklet. i prefer the adam jones inspired imagery more than the alex grey stuff.

i do see a little bit why the video took so long to make and get released. it still looks kind of unfinished actually.

other than that i really think theres a strong message in the video, which i like, but digging through the symbolism might just get too boring for the payoff.

im not expecting for my opinions to change when i get to see it on dvd, but id really love to see it in a true HD format.

in summation, dear adam

stop motion > crappy CG. other than that, good job.

It's a good thing it's so easy to do. Not like you need a number of ripping, editing, and encoding programs to do it or anything...

Re: Review the 'Vicarious' Official Music Video Here

I like it, although not enthusiastically so.

I can't think of too many pure CGI music videos that aren't awful, so props to them for creating one that's quite decent, both artistically and technically. Some of the dust/fog/particle "special effects" are a bit lame though and the Alex Grey imagery is indeed totally overused by now. But so it was with the album art, so that's at least coherent.

As a slight change in formula, the video does succeed in my mind. But I really hope Adam would take some time to do a proper stop-motion video again once.

P.S. Video game feeling? That "Net of Being" fly-through part makes me want to dust up those good ole Star Fox games.

i thought it was their best, seriously intense video, more than i expected from them even after this kind of waiting, alex and adam did a full on collaboration rather than adam having one half and alex with the other like in parabola

i wonder if alex will be involved in the clay animation of The Pot?

I loved it. I still think Parabola is my favorite... but definetly not bad. I watched it on youtube... but I'm pretty sure it will look much better on DVD.

The underlying theme I got from it was, we are all one. From the guys reflection multiplying, to the eye of the world...

It seemed to me that they tried to incorporate a little stop motion feel to the CGI... I thought it looked good... But I'm hoping for much better in the future.

For all of you dissing "that alex grey shite" :
See in the pic how you can see through the dudes skin? How the person has several layers?

Just like in Alex Grey's art?

Alex Grey was a mortician. He dissected several dead bodies to learn how to paint people's insides.

Also, he once shut himself inside a freezer that contained 20 dead bodies to attempt to contact the spirits of said bodies, but yielded only a "cold, empty feeling"

Don't believe me? Download the Alex Grey - Visionary Artist audio book.

Whoops. The point I was trying to make is, Alex Grey contributed to the WHOLE VIDEO.
In fact, he CO-DIRECTED IT.

i think it's a very tragic video (as in the story's tragic)... and the storyline can be paralleled to that of Parabol/Parabola: one dude, a situation, a breaking point, and finally spiraling out.

thanx :)
it`s really impressive...you cannot escape the massive meaning of grey`s work- only if you`re most ignorant...its too confrontative and goes very well with the message of the song`s lyrics...basically like: we are one...

Re: Review the 'Vicarious' Official Music Video Here

I agree that the transition from the skull fetus into the net of being didn't really work. We go from this awesome dark world into alex grey's paintings. Granted, the 3d version of net of being looks great and is bang on for his paintings but for this video it seems tacked on. The aesthetic doesn't flow. They should have used the model but kept the aesthetic (ie see through)

The eye looking out from the planet is also an Alex Grey painting from years ago. I think its called Earth Consciousness.

I didn't particularly like the bug going crazy. It was kinda a nice touch/look but also a kind of cop out too. A bit cliche.

Agreed also the animation in some parts was a bit choppy. Shame really, mainly in the net of being sequence as the perspective changes.

One concept i really liked was the eclipse/eye thing. If you've ever stood right under a total solar eclipse thats exactly what it looks like: a massive black hole fireball in the sky. It was interesting at the end where we're looking at the planet yet the eclipse is actually on the planet facing outwards, as the planets eye itself.

Otherwise the clip has some nice moments. The intro and outro are sweet, the floaty snake sperm heads. See through stuff, the glass blocks, all nice. But yeah i feel the net of being segment probably stopped this video from finding something unique and original.

As a 3rd Dimensionalizer of Alex Grey's paintings, Jones is doing a great job. And as Tool's first 3D clip, its a great effort and starting point for future 3D work.

However compromise makes this clip fall short. There seems to be a push and shove between two completely different aethetics, which, if considered, may have been better suited each to their own DVD single, either one being used for The Pot.

7/10

agreed, they did fucking amazing job on everything else, but i think on the net of being part they could have gone the extra mile (even though that was the part i was waiting for the whole time i was watching it) and made it look a little better like they did the rest of the video, im still very happy with the outcome of the video though, its incredible

The first thing I thought when it showed the fly-through the Net of Being is "they're soooo gonna have that on the screen and just loop it during their shows".

So yeah, I liked the video. I've only seen it twice, but I'm kinda not getting the feeling that the video doesn't have a lot to do with the song. Yes, I know that none of them really relate a lot, but they do on some level... yes, even Hush. This video seems more like it should've been "Intension". Maybe I just need to see it again a couple more times and read into some opinions that others made.

FYI: The video clocks in at 8:47 and Right in Two is 8:57. Checking out that combination right now... doesn't really fit, but I really like the beginning of the song w/ the beginning of the video. It's pretty neat, actually... do it if you're feeling bored.

Incredible video. It's not fair to say this isn't their best video because it's entirely different from the rest. I thought it was a satisfying new spin. It was most definitely visually appealing and conveyed a nicely symbolized meaning. The packaging is also fun. I enjoyed it, I think it was worth the wait!

after seeing it last night once.
my first impression is that it is mostly just to slow for me
the reaction of the character seems jarring and dull.
the last 20 or so seconds was done really well. i didn't like the net of being sequence because it seemed to be a whole other entity.
the art direction was great but i think maybe the CGI direction failed.
the beginning is good...you can see that this video took less time creatively.
less emotional than anything i have seen from them in the past.
parabol/a will be always a pinnacle.

i think the colors in those tool-ads from the net of being (2d)-painting-flythrough were nicer and more realistic than those in the actual video...
all in all what i think is that this video is one of the greatest pieces of art in the last centuries...finally showing that our society is able to produce something else than just "jackass" or "pimp my ride"...and i think -although it probably is one of the best musicvideos- it won`t win any stupid mtv-vma-price or something...

After watching the documentary they close with the 2d animation you desire:) nice to see how much effort the team put into it all and nice to hear alex greys take on it. Would have been nice to hear adam speak but when alls said and done it is a very worthwhile dvd to own..and my 2nd favourite tool video after "stinkfist"

Re: Review the 'Vicarious' Official Music Video Here

The 2nd Cross commentary made me laugh... not so much the first one. I loved the interviews with all the guys from hydraulx, alex grey, kevin willis, chet zar.... everyone but Tool or Adam Jones. It really shed some light on Tool videos for me. For the longest time i wasn't sure if Tool videos were entirely made of metaphors and layered meanings or if it was just random cool stuff... well they confirmed that every little detail has meaning to Adam and Alex... so this should be a fun video.

Re: Review the 'Vicarious' Official Music Video Here

For me, it is quite simply the greatest music video I have ever seen. Adam, and the band, are always pushing the boundaries, and as one of the guys said who was interviewed.....they are always doing something new and different. Highly original, and the final part makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. Cant wait for the next one, which is The Pot, right.........
