holy dear mother of god this new IEM recording from ToolArchive is fucking amazing. Very drum heavy mix, MJK/AJ are a little low.

I heard that! So dope.
I wonder if it was jacked from DC's ear monitors and that's why he is so high in the mix.

I don't think Danny uses ear monitors, just old-fashioned speakers.
In fact, I think Maynard is the only one using IEMs. The other 3 use monitor wedges.
Ear monitors tend to be of more benefit to vocalists.
It's possible that some of the backline techs use ear monitors, also, to keep track of their particular band member.
I haven't really paid attention to that aspect in a while.

After reading the setlist.fm site for Primus and Tool shows, it looks like Danny and Justin came out and jammed w/Primus on the last night of the tour. That's cool but does Junior (or anybody else) know why this didn't happen more often on the tour? I kind of expected them to cross jam a lot more and wonder why they didn't. Any speculation Toolies?

I was kinda hoping they would do more of that, too.
There wasn't a lot of spare time in the afternoons for them to work on stuff together. That could have been part of it.
Some days there wasn't enough time for Primus to do a sound check, even.
That wasn't a surprise. I believe that was a known scenario going in to the tour.
The clock was a bigger factor this time around. There were some long drives that caused later load-ins. Having 3 bands is somewhat unusual on a Tool tour, also. That required earlier doors, which also shortened the afternoons a little. Primus had their own video screens, which added a little time to setup. They had inflatable mushrooms at the first show, or 2, and they stopped setting those up because of time issues.

Do they really need to practice? I mean DC/TA/JC/LC could probably just jam for an hour and sell those tickets for $100/ea.
Back when they were doing the Lateralus jams in the middle, did they practice those or were those completely improv?

Do they really need to practice? I mean DC/TA/JC/LC could probably just jam for an hour and sell those tickets for $100/ea.
Back when they were doing the Lateralus jams in the middle, did they practice those or were those completely improv?
|
Sometimes they did, often before the first time with someone. If nothing else, to try to get monitor levels figured out so they can hear each other, and the sound crew need to work out how they are going to mic it and get levels out front.
The Lateralus jams were almost always completely improv'd between Danny and the guest, but they did sometimes get the guest to sound check to feel it out. There were definitely times that a little rehearsal wouldn't have hurt.
Danny and Justin did practice with Primus for about 10-15 minutes during their (Primus) sound check in New Orleans.

I really liked those mushrooms. My friend that was visiting from Utah really loves mushrooms and I told him about seeing them the night before but they didn't bust them out the second night. He was tripping on acid but had brought some mushrooms as well. I guess acid would be a better public psychedelic than mushrooms. He really loves Primus and it was only his second Tool show. He had a blast but was kind of sad that nobody was standing up during Primus because he wanted to dance. Hard to sit down when you have groovy music! Tool of course blew his mind and the next day he told me that he will be listening to a lot more Tool.
Thanks Junior for all the hard work. Got to sit behind the soundboard for the first night in San Diego. That was the first time that I had that view and so happy I bought those tickets. No heads in front of me, no cell phones in front of my view, but beautiful screens and great sounding music. Cheers!

So my official vote is no more triple bills. One opening act and 2 hours of Toolishness.
Make it so.

Thanks Junior for the info! That makes sense about the sound guys needing time to figure out the mix and levels. And with the shorter afternoons, they wouldn't get the time to tinker. I didn't think it was an artist/musician issue. Maybe that's why it was done on the last night since they sound checked together for Primus. Probably realized "Holy crap, its the last night and we haven't got to jam together on stage!". Us fans are mostly clueless into how complicated it is and think "Can't they just strap on a guitar and walk out on stage?" They could, but it would sound like shit.
As always Junior, thanks again for your input and insight to some of the inner workings of the tour. We really appreciate you giving some of your time to us toolnavy castoffs ;) Hope to see you again on the next tour.

ah, finally back home. that was a crazy 6 days. met some regulars from this site, and a few new people as well. gonna write up a long-ass detailed review of everything when i get the time and reflect on everything.
anyways, Puscifer tour up next! to those of you who haven't gotten into puscifer yet, or missed their most recent tour... CHECK IT OUT.
Money Shot is by far the best Puscifer album to date (in my opinion), and the new tour concept is incredibly unique.

Crazy to hear the electronic samples so loud, what they actually sound like out of the mix context, particularly 46+2.

They did it in like 1992 or something. I have a bootleg with a 10 minute long spaceship sounding thing happening and it's awesome.
