Damn Dallas thread is closed. I thanked ganjalf but also wanted to thank jwb for the updates- thanks guys! Hope you had fun tonight.
Just got back home. That was a long 36 hours, flew out to Dallas Sat. am and back to NC Sunday afternoon.
Glad you liked the updates, it wasn't much trouble at all and actually kind of fun. Might do it again Wednesday in Charlotte.
Are you suggesting that Sonnyboy is brainwashed or feels an obligation to say that he enjoyed the shows that he has been to though he really didn't enjoy them? I would imagine (though I cannot be 100% certain) that Sonnyboy would probably tell us if he didn't like the show, I can see no reason for him to lie about it. You may be suggesting that he is forcing himself to believe he liked the shows because he paid for them but I would imagine that if he didn't like the first show he went to he probably would have sold the tickets to the other shows to someone that wanted to go.
What do you think he should do instead of accepting "whatever they do, regardless of what it is"? Should he run on stage and rip up all of the set lists and give them the one's he wants them to play? Should he have a heart to heart with Maynard in an attempt to show him the "errors of his ways"? Should he try to rally the crowd against the band? Should he protest outside of the arena with a picket sign trying to get people to boycott the shows so the band loses profits? Seriously, what should we the "non true fans" be doing to rebel against them?
You stated that you don't need to see this leg of shows, well ok, don't. If you're not going to then what's the problem? You haven't spent money on tickets to a show you'd hate so you are clearly of a higher intellect than the rest of us. Well done.
Hmmm, well, that may be true but you have seen Tool live before, correct? All four members are from the US and you supported them by buying tickets that lined their pockets so at least you got duped by "idiots" from the US therefore you would be at least an "idiot" as well, though I think "mentally challenged" would be more accurate.
Oh, and finally, you obviously have hard feelings towards the US and particularly towards Tool so why are you wasting your time posting on an American forum for that band? You aren't really accomplishing anything, are you?
Thanks for that level of support Maz. I am certainly not down on or against dissenting views of Tool or their current tour. I just ask that it be backed up and contextualized by experience and thought. Not so much to ask, I don't think.
Honestly, this forum has introduced me to so fine people- you among them. And I am more than willing to bet that if 3poundsoflove and I found ourselves in a room together with a nice bottle of Italian red vino that we'd get along famously.
Statement of what? The only statement I see there is that Maynard thinks he's too cool to just get together and play music with his band. Or that he doesn't practice with the band, which explains why he misses every other note for the first couple shows of every tour.
It gets really loud in that room, both as you can imagine and as evident by the distorted sound in that clip. It's 15'x15' or 20'x20' (at best). No-one speaking or singing would hear themselves in that room.
There is a double-glass window directly behind the guy with the camera. On the other side of that window is another room where Maynard often rehearses from.
I don't know if he was or wasn't there that day, but that is the 'normal' situation.
why does the septogram only come out 1/4 the way, directly behind Justin? i noticed this in Denver and in Dallas. it has really been bugging me, i mean from a sacred geometry perspective. this thing was the centerpiece of the most amazing shows from the Lateralus period. what the hell??? Junior, please help me with this one!!!

The backdrop that Adam designed was meant for the star to hang in that position. You'd have to ask him.
Oh Junior,
are you still doing the 'red' approach towards Jambi? 'Cause I think Jambi had the best atmosphere with its added light effects and such (2006).
'Jambi' is still red and orange, primarily.
As with most Tool songs, I tend to keep the same colours for the life of the song. For example, 'Stinkfist' still has the same colour palette as I used in 1996. Often, a song's exact colours won't get used for any other songs, and not even for other other bands I've done. There have been exceptions, but not many. It's usually because I've changed my mind about a song, or it needs a new approach to fit in with the other songs. Sometimes the colours shift around a bit when a song is new, but eventually they settle in.
GRAND PRAIRIE – Sound and vision make an intensely powerful pair, especially when talking about progressive metal band Tool. Maynard James Keenan, Danny Carey, Adam Jones and Justin Chancellor take that artistic merger to arguably the loftiest level of any current hard rocking group. There's a deep, metaphorical reason for every beat, riff and chord progression and its accompanying video image.
Tool's frontman, Maynard James Keenan, stayed out of the spotlight but was impossible to ignore.Nowhere was that more pronounced than in concert Saturday night before a sold-out crowd at Nokia Theatre in Grand Prairie. For nearly two hours, Tool used screen pictures, strobe and laser lights to not merely augment, but to interpret its brand of metal. That's no small accomplishment. Tool is all about precision. Nothing is sloppy; it's all methodically well-executed.
Drummer Carey, dressed in his signature basketball shorts and tank top, pounded with perfection, all the while making sure that the rhythm section was tight, piercing and profound. Tool's songs rattle your core, for sure, but they aren't noise. They represent the intricate, ambitious talents of four men who are as enigmatic as they are professional.
During "Lateralus," one of two encore tunes, we got dual drumming from Carey and Ashton Bird (of opening outfit Tweak Bird) that was tribal and rock-fortified. For "Vicarious," Keenan, the "anti-frontman" who never had a spotlight on him, stripped down to just boxer briefs and used an amplified bullhorn as his microphone. It's as if he was trying to give the audience, well, a vicarious thrill.
Keenan is a case study on the effectiveness of a non-frontman. He refused to be the focus, letting his bandmates get the glow while he remained in the dark, so to speak. Brilliant move. It made him all the more transfixing.
That is, when you weren't too busy staring at the video screens, one on either side of the stage and two that took up the entire back wall of the platform. It's hard to describe what was seen: shapes and colors, patterns, recognizable and abstract images. Those sand people on display during "Stinkfist" were as compelling as the crunchy, beat-heavy song.
A Tool concert is sensory overload. It's a show by four men who are serious about the all-emcompassing presentation and performance of music.
Tweakbird came on about 7:35 played for about a half hour and I had no problem getting a poster @ either show that I went to,the mile high posters weren't numbered, but the rio rancho ones were .I got #332/350,and I waited until after the show to buy one since i was on the rail and didn't want to fuck up a poster I spent 25$ on.
Interesting, does the band have a say in what colours they like most for a certain song or do they leave it up to you?
I don't have a good answer for that question.
It's somewhere in the middle.
Since it touches too much on the creative process, I'll have to leave it at that.
It sounds kinda phoney-baloney, but I don't think the band are comfortable anyone revealing too much about the creative side.
Chunga, you really love to search the web for negative reviews aren't you? Read the reviews in the threads. Enough positive ones if my English doesn't let me down. Please stop being negative for being negative (as that is what you are doing for a while now).

Exactly, thats why so many of us have come to find Tool to be almost mystical in a sense. They understand the sanctity of being true artists. In a world where art in music is becoming rare, Tool has managed to be true to keeping their art sacred. They have upheld that understanding for their entire life as a band. Since you have worked with the band for over a decade, you for one know this better than most of us. I, as well as many others here, are truely grateful that you come here and fill us in on details otherwise unknown. I also am grateful you respect their boundaries.
Keep up the good work man, you are an insanely vital part of Tool's live essence and I must once again thank you for the outstanding fuckin work over the years. Your colaboration with the band is perfection.

Here's another thing you can try (though it's a bit late for that now with the tour in full swing. Might work for some of you who have a few weeks till the show though).
Make a mix/iPod playlist/whatever of all the Tool songs they WON'T be playing (minues any that you really just don't care to hear live anymore, i.e. Sober, etc.), and listen to that non-fucking stop. Listen to it until you're so fucking sick of those songs that you can't stand it, and ALL you want to hear is...
so, arrived at this random hotel somewhat close to the venue.
why must tool always play in venues that are far away from the cities they are associated with? seriously, like 75% of the tour so far has been at venues in the middle of absolutely nowhere.
in other news, i saw justin riding his bike outside the venue an hour or so ago!

Interesting to know. Fantastic job in San Antonio by the way.

Shit, I would ran my ass over there and gave him props on being the raddest bass player ever. Seriously, Justin is the most under appreciated element in Tool by fans for the most part, and it saddens my little heart :(

i fully concur.
justin is by far my favourite. when i'm in the pit i always park myself against the rail on his side. his little chicken dance thing during lateralus in dallas was hilarious.
btw: assuming my phone/3G works, i will post live setlist updates in this thread.
Oh... haven't seen anyone post it here yet so here you go:
do we get that "cover" song tonight?
"ODE TO GWINNETT"
What'll ya have, what'll ya have?
Frosted orange or Coke with lime?
Walk a heavy dog with a bag of rags
And we'll get ya to Duluth on time!
What'll ya have, what'll ya have?
Wrinkled strings my dog-eatin' brother?
C'mon, we'll get ya to that Tool show
But I don't know nothing about a cover!
What'll ya have, what'll ya have?
Trouser-chili or a yellow dog?
Ring one while there's still some sun
And we'll thrown in a toasted bun!
(Knowing that you're on the run)
What'll ya have, what'll ya have!
All the way for you and your lover?
A Varsity orange with two straws,
Blame God if there ain't no cover!
Alright I'm heading out now.
I apologize if I spam this thread later for the setlist as i'm going to just make a post for every song. it's the fasest/easiest way for me, plus i hate using internet on my phone. but i'm sure you guys will forgive me:p
and if you don't hear from me.... well then it didn't work and you impatient bastards are going to have to wait!
yea what is with that newsletter? and anyone using twitter tonight?
