An even bigger 'who cares'.

I don't see as to why a link to a Youtube clip of their performance is going to do any harm--and it's not like it's illegal to do so. I don't see the point of this rule, but I guess I'll respect it.

Maynard has said in chat "that's fine" in regards to recordings distributed among fans for free. So if it's against forum rules, that's cool, but nobody blame Maynard for this one.

It's definitely not the band that is responsible for this rule. There are multiple reputable ROIO sites that don't allow bootlegs at band requests, that have multiple Tool boots on them.

Sorry to be a bother, and maybe I'm far too tired right now (probably), but I actually don't quite understand what you're saying here. Are you saying that the band has NOT disallowed bootlegs on any such ROIO sites, but/and that some other force has requested the ban of the discussion of such bootlegs on this site?

I may not concur or will on the following falsehood: Would it be untrue if you deny that you do not under any circumstances allow the possibility of not recording a Tool bootleg, or would that not be a misstatement? Why or why not?

Try to not explain your opinion with examples, please. Only theoretical situations that could have happened in flatly fictional situations need be discussed.

Sorry to disappoint, that's the way the cookie crumbles. I found multiple boots from the last tour elsewhere. If I could make rules here, I would have a section inside the Live forum just for trading boots, but alas I don't.

can someone cite an example of the band being ok with bootlegs?

i have mjk saying 'bootleg cds are bad.'

http://toolshed.down.net/articles/in...h_Maynard.html

but i'm not sure of their opinion on trading mp3's for free. frankly i'm willing to reconsider the rule about it, if given appropriate sources.

^ wow, that was 12 years ago. So many things have changed since then. One important one is the role of the internet in bootleg trading. In the mid 90's, there were people who taped Tool shows to trade, but a lot of them made their way out to the black market. I have the feeling that's who MJK was talking about.

Kabir, why don't you just email someone in the band (or Blair or whoever) and just ask them how they feel about it?

Might be better to leave well enough alone. I'd hate for a someone to start sending out takedown notices to various ROIO sites because it was brought to their attention.

it's things like this that cause people like maynard to have a negative opinion about bootlegs. it's sad really, as bootlegs serve as a good way to promote a band (and i don't give a crap how big your band is, it always needs promotion. turning new people on to the music is always a good thing, especially when it's this good), and also serves as a memento for those who were actually at the show. capturing something as intense and memorable as a tool show to take home with you shouldn't be frowned upon. it's our nature to want to preserve a good experience that we had, rather than be teased by the band that a live DVD might be released one year. we got salival, and i'm quite grateful for that, but there's several tours that I can only get via bootleg, and unless tool is going to start releasing shows from every tour on CD, i'm going to keep getting them that way.

just because there are assholes that will try to profit doesn't mean it shouldn't be done. just because there are scalpers doesn't mean tool should stop playing live shows. there's always going to be "that guy", but you shouldn't let them ruin it for everyone.

Good thing Tool fans are not up to speed with the Hippies. Streaming the show live and being on couch tour is where it's at.

Actually this rule is 100% because of the band. Tool doesn't want you making bootlegs, as evidenced by their no photos/audio/video recording devices rule, and we don't want to piss them off.

At least that was the rationale back when we started this forum...

Edit: Oops, Kabir already posted. Two years ago.

For the record, anyone who tries to make money off an artist without their permission is the lowest form of scum. I only deal with music lovers that appreciate and CONTRIBUTE to the artist. I have bought every Tool album, tickets to 12 shows, t-shirts, and great word of mouth.

Lower than a rapist?

Very similar, both take against a persons will for their own gain.

Do I want a trophy?

Nope, I just want to be a contributor to worthwhile art.

Re: Bootleggers please read

Here's a wild suggestion to combat bootleggers.

How about you do a tour that hits 3-5 major US markets, take up residency, and perform each album from start to finish. Then release a DVD/Album of EVERY Tool song live. I would much rather watch/listen to something straight out of the soundboard than watch some shaky BS.

Re: Bootleggers please read

I read some interview they were saying they didn't want to put out a video recording of their performances because then people wouldn't be taken by surprise at the show. With swooping camera angles, zoom, and all the cinematography they do, one might have certain expectations that actually GOING to a live show can't satisfy… and on the converse, they didn't want people to buy a DVD and miss out on the ACTUAL CONNECTION TO THE MUSIC. You have to be AT the show and FEEL it. They also went on to explain that with their experience with record labels and producers, they didn't trust the executives to let it be about the music. They figured they'd be snatching close ups and throwing their face on the screen hyping the band members causing people to miss the message. All in all, i respect what i have heard from the band. They got roped into a contract that included a "DVD with live material", and thats what we got: A DVD with some live material; Salival.

Re: Bootleggers please read

I'd prefer a live dvd from 2001-2002 rather then a new tour dvd. the energy and the setlist those two years was amazing. They'll never be able to top the Lateralus era in my opinion. Hope they prove me wrong though, which they haven't done this year. Though i've got to say the visuals for this tour is outstanding junior, top notch work. If I could i'd buy you a beer sometime.

I totally agree with the idea of being AT the show so you can really feel it. At the same time, I live in Patagonia, a place where the band will never play (Nor even near) So I guess bootlegs are the only way to have a minimal clue of what they do when performing. The poor quality of audio & video from the band fans is dissapointing, so an official live DVD would be great for me. Anyway, the band's spirit is respectable and perhaps a DVD would tear a lot of things down for them (and us).
