It's actually pretty smart on his part. You have to figure that the guys in Tool know that a certain percentage of their shows are going to be in front of obnoxious, piece-of-shit crowds. Maynard also knows that his voice isn't what it used to be, at least consistently (both shows I went to for 10K Days, Maynard belted out EVERY high note...every one). So I think he just kills two birds with one stone. He saves his voice for the shows where people actually get into it and give him extremely positive feedback, and for the shows that are for asshole crowds, he just says "fuck it" and doesn't give the crowd his full attention, because the crowd isn't giving him theirs.
I think Tool will definitely release at least one more album, and I think they'll probably release more. Maynard said in that Spin interview that they'll all play together until one dies, and I believe that. It doesn't mean, though, that they'll still be putting out albums every 5 years. They're getting older, it's only natural.
Besides: do you really want to see Tool wind up like Gilmour's Pink Floyd? No thank you, I'll gladly let them retire and leave me with 4 wonderful albums than go on to become hollow artistic ghosts.

Really well put, I agree.
