Bill hicks sang this on stage, he said when we were kids we knew all this but we forgot it, "row, row, row your boat gently down the stream, merrily, merrily, merrily, merrily, LIFE IS BUT A DREAM!"
This has to be the song Maynard is refering to and as for the Irish book connection, I don't know. I'm Irish and that song is known by everyone, but I'm pretty sure it's like that the world over. I'm sure if you look hard enough you'll find an Isish book with reference to it. And that is proberbly the novel you are suppored to open in the light
