"Supposed" should be replaced with "assumed".
Although some people interpreted the original newsletter to say that, it did not actually announce such a thing.
Something I've been pondering is that since that newsletter took place in some kind of alternate universe, January 17 and December 14 are both 17 days from the turn of the year.
