Having the screens behind the band was interesting at first. It wasn't
so great if you actually wanted to see what was on them. The lasers and
smoke were okay, but they seemed way too pedestrian for Tool. I mean,
these guys had giant, spinning blastospheres the last time I saw them.
How do you go from that to lasers? Frankly, the 2002 Lateralus tour's
overall presentation was much better. There was something different
about that entire show, and I haven't been able to put my finger on it.
I remember walking out of the United Center in a daze, feeling like I'd
just had my ass kicked by Shaolin monks or something. I thought about
it for weeks afterward. This time, it was just a concert. A superb
concert, but just a concert. I don't like to admit it, but I was
disappointed.
