THE ZEN EYE

We have two eyes to see two sides of things
But there must be a third eye
Which will see everything at the same time
And yet not see anything.
That is to understand Zen.
-- D. T. Suzuki (1870 – 1966)

It is as though you have an eye
That sees all forms
But does not see itself.
This is how your mind is.
Its light penetrates everywhere
And engulfs everything,
So why does it not know itself?
-- Foyan (1067 – 1120)

Look directly!
What is this?
Look in this manner
And you won’t be fooled!
-- Bassui Tokusho (1327 – 1387)

+

In the awakened eye
Mountains and rivers
Completely disappear.
The eye of delusion
Looks out upon
Deep fog and clouds
Alone on my zazen mat
I forget the days
As they pass
The wisteria has grow
Thick over the eaves
Of my hut.
-- Muso Soseki (1275 – 1351)

If your ears see,
And eyes hear,
Not a doubt you’ll cherish
How naturally the rain drips
From the eaves!
-- Daito Kokushi (1282 – 1337)

If the eye never sleeps,
All dreams will naturally cease.
If the mind makes no discriminations,
The ten thousand things
Are as they are, of single essence.
To understand the mystery of the One-essence
Is to be released from all entanglements.
When all things are seen equally
The timeless Self-essence is reached.
No comparisons or analogies are possible
In this causeless, relationless state.
-- T’sen T’sang (d.606)

People who study Buddhism
Should seek real, true perception
And understanding for now.
If you attain real, true perception
And understanding,
Birth and death don’t affect you;
You are free to go or stay.
You needn’t seek wonders,
For wonders come of themselves.
-- Linji (d.867)

Do we not cherish the
Infinite brightness
Of the one bright pearl?
Who can surpass
The virtue of this
Brilliant, radiant pearl
That covers the universe?
The essence of causality
Never ceases and
The pearl is always bright.
It is our original face and enlightened eye.
-- Dogen Kigen (1200 – 1253)

Realization makes
Every place a temple,
The absolute endows
All beings with the true eye.
When you come to grasp it,
You find it was ever
Before your eyes.
If you can see clear
What is before your very eyes,
It is what fills the ten directions;
When you see what fills
The ten directions,
You find it is only what is before your eyes.
-- Daikaku Rankei Doryu (1213 – 1279)

The past is already past.
Don’t try to regain it.
The present does not stay.
Don’t try to touch it.
From moment to moment.
The future has not come;
Don’t think about it
Beforehand.
Whatever comes to the eye,
Leave it be.
There are no commandments
To be kept;
There’s no filth to be cleansed.
With empty mind really
Penetrated, the dharmas
Have no life.
When you can be like this,
You’ve completed
The ultimate attainment.
