Wwwwwwwwhaaaaat? Philosopher stone it's about converting something into gold, and others were seeking the immortality. Alchemyst were into that stuff, but no one did it till now (today some guys can create gold, but is more expensive than real gold).
I doubt so philosopher stone have a metaphysical meaning, but still could have it. Personally, I don't read Wikipedia too much
