Even if lachrymology was a joke (which it almost surely was), the idea of it remains, because we are discussing it at this moment. Thusly it cleary has some definition to us, and can't be "fake" per say, because we are using a set of charecters together to form a word which expresses an idea that we can all understand. I think it may be just a case of giving a word to a concept which we all know, but can't agree on what to define as. Thusly hoax or not, it's idea, it's context is still usful to us.
