They probably wouldn't spend a lot of time recording new stuff for that reason. The more likely scenario is that the songs were lying around wholly or mostly finished. Bands TYPICALLY have a bunch of stuff like that lying around. For example, System of a Down released a whole album of left over stuff; Metallica had about a whole CD of stuff of completely different stuff that was being traded before St. Anger came out.
