The point lol of any TOOL song is that the/y/a/ir/e/ meanings only bound by the lyrics. When writing(righting) a song, the music comes first. They tape the music, then listen to it and think of what it "sounds" like, as in what words that could be inserted and go with the music. Right, so now the song is done, it's time to figure it out. Stinkfist: I don't want to tear you away from this page, I know this has been wired, keep reading. "something has to change... un-deniable dilema" is a good line to start off with. It can also sound like "something has to change our deniable dilema". Such is the way of a lot of TOOL lyrics. They also pull the "finger deep within the borderline"
gag in witch they are hinting at you that the meaning is deep and even has a borderline. So, the song basically encompasses all that can be considered appropriate for what Stinkfist is saying. It could be about a girlfriend or a drug. I'll keep digging till. I feel something. Peace everybody.

Stinkfist.

When I first heard the song It was very inspiring to me. Very catchy and interesting. Didn't quite get it. Didn't bother to investigate yet...But then I saw it live. That changed my perspective.

But once again, I wasn't listening.

I saw the recent 11/24/07 show in SLC, and that's when I really discovered what it meant to me.

A female and I had previously gotten sensual and as we were finishing up, the song popped into my mind. the one line..."I'll keep digging until I feel something." I felt completely numb to what I had to done. Nothing seemed to satisfy.
To me, it's about being numb and like an animal. Using something for a moment's stimulation. And it's not enough, I need more. I don't really want what I'm touching but I need it to feed the monster within.

the whole part about "fisting within the borderline" that can be taken two ways. Though I doubt Maynard is talking about the sexual way. the way I'm thinking is a mental way. You dig and dig, getting further and further until you finally reach past the borderline and then you'll understand what you really need...

love this guy^

i was reading up on the book of thoth last night and was easily able to compare the thoth/crowley deck design and composition (aleister crowley and lady freida harris) to how tool writes all of their songs. like, a qabbalistic skeleton or something... something to slide down ...you know, the more you erase your ego and come to understand "unconditional, without judgment".

I wasn't trying to be mean by the way, i'm just saying that what they were talking about exactly what we've been talking about in here for a very long time now.

And i've seen this deck mentioned before but I have no idea what it is?

aww, thanks.

but how about this...

"a message of hope for those who choose to hear it AND a warning for those who do not"

it's all the same message, the same lyrics ...but it all depends on how the listener takes it in, ya know? from subjective (warnings) ...to objective (absolute truth, hope). nothing new. i know. "slide a mile six inches at a time on maynard's dick" ...and then the puscifer liner notes (captain).

To me, Stinkfist is about how people in general never seem to be satisfied. Give one thing and they enjoy it for a second or for that time but when it is done or used up we want more...we NEED more. You keep on making yorself feel better and better, until eventually you just run out of it. Once there is nothing left to "dig" you have nowhere to go but down.

"Something kinda sad about,
the way that things have come to be.
Desensitized to everything.
What became of subtlety?
How can it mean anything to me,
if I really don't feel a thing at all?"

To me this is the biggest part of this song. It is sad the way the world has become...how we put possesions and certain persons above everything else. We forget that there is a world around us. We have become blinded by this way of life and it just seems as though no one even cares. How can all these possesions make me happy when I am bored of them and use them for only short periods of time. I don't feel much other than when I have these possesions but, this is not true. There just isn't as much gratitude from the little things that used to give so much pleasure...such as a sunrise, or the leaves in autumn. I ALWAYS NEED MORE!

Stinkfist is a great song from Tool, it has a light all it's own.

and is extremely bad ass live... the first time i saw them play this i was completely blown away... moving the opening drum line to the climax towards the end is genius...

To truly start anew you must torch your old self and be reborn from the ashes.

Human Condition:
"Something has to change.
Un-deniable dilemma.
Boredom's not a burden
Anyone should bear."

Comfortable ignorance shattered by a realization:
"Constant over stimu-lation numbs me
and I wouldn't have
It any other way.

It's not enough.
I need more.
Nothing seems to satisfy.
I don't want it.
I just need it.
To feel, to breathe, to know I'm alive."

It hurts to question and go beyond your limits, but to progress you must continue. Yet relax, it wont hurt as much as it used to. Relax:
"Knuckle deep inside the borderline.
This may hurt a little but it's something you'll get used to.
Relax. Slip away."

Searching, searching...searching (nothing is the same any more):
"Something kinda sad about
the way that things have come to be.
Desensitized to everything.
What became of subtlety?

How can it mean anything to me
If I really don't feel anything at all?

I'll keep digging till
I feel something. "

Deeper and deeper, everything is truly okay:
"Elbow deep inside the borderline.
Show me that you love me and that we belong together.
Shoulder deep within the borderline.
Relax. Turn around and take my hand."

and a genius move putting it at the beginning of the album... and not to say that opiate and undertow aren't strong in their own way, but aenima was a huge step forward for tool... it was the first tool album i listened to... i started listening at a young age(14) and that album always stuck with me, way before i knew what it could mean... before i began to think...

same for me, it was my first Tool album as well. at the very begining, even before I started learning English I used to listen to it while falling to sleep and everything felt allright. now I dig deeper and deeper through the whole thing and see a different, new things every time.

That's sort of what I think of when I hear this song. I think about how society keeps pushing things to the limits. We all want our technology to be smaller, faster, flashier. We never really stop to appreciate whats really there. Technology has desensitized us so much that we never appreciate life.

i agree... it falls right in line with vicarious... in the desensitized state that we seem to be in... nationally.. Also I sorta feel that it sets up something to keep in mind when listening to Tool which makes it a perfect opener for the album. "Not everything is what it seems". They use the metaphor for anal fisting to describe the desensitization that we just talked about.

yeah with vicarious it's more in your face... which i think is what we need right now... the time for reading between the lines is running out... the message needs to get out as quick and as much as possible... we're in the shitter and going down the drain... we need to wake up... or in the words of rage against the machine... "WAAAAAAAAAAAKE UUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUP"

Man we need more people like Rage Against the Machine right now.

i heard an interview with tom morello and he said that even though rumors of rage reuniting were false that he believes that at the level of turmoil this world is in, that it needs a revolution and a band like rage could greatly fuel that... that's not verbatim, but something like that... a new rage album would be so bad ass...

People manly accept the theory that this is about a lack of satisfaction or not finding something fullfilling, well how about this.

This song was written on purpose to be frustratingly enigmatic, a puzzle for tool fans, and the overall meaning of the song is its not enough to be a brilliant song, we need to keep digging to find something. You could also extend it to be a motto for the band, as in Jungian theories (I only have a basic knowledge of Jung to tell the truth) you have to keep 'digging' to find something to continue your development.

This could also be the meaning behind Lateralus...
