No matter who the song is about,Tool set up a good visual in the music.Picture the day when Jesus died for our sins.
The intro sounds like people hammering the nails in Jesus' hands.
The sound effects of the instruments and Maynard's humming are the followers of Christ crying.
And of couse,Maynard uses the filter effect in the intro to give that "guy at the funeral with the microphone" sound.The guy given the eulogy.As a joke,Maynard did the filtered "er,ers" as a way of the guy checking the mic before he gives the eulogy.

I have wondered what the begining of Eulogy was suppsosed to mean. That is the best (not to mention only) explination I've heard. It really does make a lot of sense now.

l don't know...that's a pretty fast, faded, and light hammering, for having to go through someones arm...And if you've ever actually heard a Eulogy...they do the sound check BEFORE the funeral begins, and it's not usually muffled like that, either.
