I had the Lateralus CD playing at a very low volume while meditating and heard/felt some indescribable things. It wasn't until after I was suddenly jerked out of transe(state of conciousness?) that I realized what song had been playing. Anybody else have any similar experiances under the influence of drugs/hypnosis/meditation?
I admit I'm a neophyte at meditation and the like, but I'm learning.

ya , when i listen to all of lateralus it really puts me in a meditating state and i often think about other possibiltes and more open thoughts in general (ex- when listeing to Faaip de Oiad when it came on after listening to the whole album, instead of turning it off like i usually would i listened to it and took it in an open mind). its like when im high, im in a very open state and unlike alot of ppl i know im not a fucin idiot. meditaing to lateralus would is a very good idea ( try meditaitng stoned...its fucked up and REALLY easy to do like a pro, time flys by.)
Yes, your brain begins to resonate and rest at a cretain window of real frequencies called Theta Frequencies during trance like states of consciousness.
Do some research on that it will help assist in further meditative experiences.

I can second that. Not only is it a lot easier to alter the path of your consciousness when you're high, but I tend to be able to vizualize things a lot more vividly.

ejectawheel and others, what kinds of meditation do you practice? i have been poking around online and all the meditation centered sites I have visited say that in most forms of meditation to keep yourself centered on one specific thought/idea. I have tried to meditate, but have not been successful, maybe i am not doing it right or have found wrong directions? usually when i try i close my eyes but find myself getting sleepy w/o music, while with music i find myself thinking just as if i were awake, no different. And with my eyes open, i find it too easily to be distracted. maygbe you guys could post some useful links that may help me...or just tell me how I'm fucking it up and some tips on how to fix it. Or is there no wrong way to meditate and I'm just retarded? well, come back in a few

I would agree there is really no wrong way but you diffinitely need to be steered in the right dirrection. First off think of meditating as a process of becoming fully sensitive to your body and as well sensitive to your cognitive mind; your thinking mind. Ultimately throught this process of becoming 'aware' or hightening your sensitivity to this dualistic/polar relationship you can utlimately transcend physical sensation and your current position; ie where you are sitting while meditating, what you often think about in your everyday life, distractions ect.
Now with that said you must acknowledge that in order to do this you need to maintain an environment where it is possible for the body to feel intensely and the mind to focus.
I practice a kinda customized Taoist approach to meditation which revolves around breathing techniques. But first off find a place where you can sit down comfortably. Now make sure that all distractions are cut off be it music or tv or whatever because there is nothing more frustrating that trying to meditate when you can hear little things in the background that distract your thoughts. I know that this may be hard at times but try the best you can. And as far as sitting I wouldn't necessarily say there is anyone way to sit all that is important is that its comfortable because the slightest discomfort can also be a distraction.
Next I would come up with a little mantra before you start. And these can very to what ever you think is important at that time in your life. It can be as simple as 'stress impeeds perfection' or 'allow my mind to focus' or whatever but keep it simple. I would suggest that your mantra be sort of a plea to the higher levels of consciousness to show themselves during this meditative session. Some examples that I use, depending where I am in life, are 'pain is only pain unless you believe' which is similar to 'pain is an illusion', 'may I die to my self and be humbled again' and 'render me awaken eternal morning maker'. This all depends on your beliefs and your challenges your experiencing in your life but I encourage you to come up with your own.
Next I would, while repeating your little mantra in your head, take in some very deep breaths until you fill your lungs completely at capacity and hold that breath for about 5-7 seconds or until you feel slightly light headed and then gradualy release that breath steadily. And do this repeatedly for a few minutes until you begin to feel alittle relaxed.
Next I would, while this time repeating quietly your mantra to yourself OUT LOUD, begin to breath deeply, once again, until your lungs are almost at thier capacity and slowly breath out until almost all the air is out of them. While doing this for awhile, and don't set a specific time on it, focus on the physical sensations your body is experiencing. As you begin to become aware of these sensations focus an allowing your body to relax; slouch your shoulders, relax your hands, etc. Also listen to your self repeat your mantra and I mean listen to your own voice intently and allow these words to seep in to your thinking mind. Keep doing this until your pretty relaxed.
Now when you feel pretty relaxed, instead of saying the mantra out loud begin to think upon the mantra not necessarily repeat it but to think of the reasons why this is the mantra you choose today. Now your breathing during this step should transition into a more controled routine. By this I mean try to steadily and consitantly breath in over a certain period of time and breath out for an equal amount of time. Now you don't necessarily need to time this but take a mental ballpark figure like 15 or 20 seconds. So to clarify, attempt to breath in for 15 seconds and at the hight of your inhale exhale for 15 seconds until you completely expell the air from your lungs and then breath in again repeating this controled inhale/exhale process. Continue to repeat this process for awhile. Now while breathing focus on listening to your breathing pattern and when I say this try to listen as closely as you can to the sounds you make when breathing; ie the sound your body and air makes when it passes into and out of your lungs. Focus on that sound and allow it to become a relaxing element to the mind and your body. You may feel like you are further becoming relaxed and please allow that to happen. When breathing like this allow your body to do what ever it wants.
Now at this point, if your body is relaxed, it is easier to clear the mind. So at this point just allow your self to be. Don't think about the mantra anymore. And often times you'll find your self breathing in a stagering perfect rythym because you've focused and conditioned the body to breath in equal amounts of time but at this point don't worry about breathing correctly. You may find your self, and this is contingent upon if you've relaxed the body, breathing at a very shollow level but try not to think of it. Try as hard as you can just to 'be'. Now at this point I have no suggestions what to think of because often times your intuition just kicks in dirrects your thoughts. But I would suggest just trying not to think of anything which is a challenge.
If all this is done correctly you'll find your self in a trance state. The intersting thing about this is that, if practiced consistently, you'll be able to consciously begin to ponder things in this state, more or less controling your thought dirrection. But this does take practice so good luck.
