For all you guys who record your own music, which drum programs do you use? I have yet to find a really good program with which to create unique beats and be able to save them as mp3 or wav. Does anyone have a suggestion?

you could always use fruity loops...

I'll second the Fruity Loops recommendation. It's the only thing I use for beats, when I'm not playing them. Fruity pretty much kicks piles of ass and is the best value there is in audio software in terms of 'what it does'/price.

BTW, if you're doing audio work, you should never use mp3s. Even if your source is an mp3, you should convert it to a wave file, as the conversion eats up CPU cycles and I can attest to the fact that, at times, every one of those cycles counts when working on particularly demanding project.

i dwnloaded fruity loops and it seems quite sweet, but I have a couple questions for you veteran users. How do I string "patterns" together so I can make complete songs, and also, is it possible to record guitar input through that program?
muchos gracias

Use the song or pattern (I can't remember which) editor. You save individual patterns via that number pad doohicky. Then you pick whichever patterns you want to play and when in the song/pattern editor.

I'm not sure. I'm thinking that the new 'studio' version lets you do this, but I can't say for sure. I have an older version that does everything I need it to do. I do my multitrack mixing/editing/recording in Sonic Foundry's Vegas Video (which is obviously a 'video' app, but it started off as an audio app), which I think has the most intuitive and straightforward interface of any multitrack-oriented audio app. Something similar you could try is Sonic Foundry's Acid, and I think there's a free version with a track count limitation, or something like that.

I found this program called "Hammerhead" I think. It had Hammerhead in the title. I've never used Fruity loops before, but this program is completely free, you can use your own samples, and it's the easiest thing in the world to use, that I've ever seen.

Hammerhead is ok, but it's like 5 years old and is just weak as hell compared to Fruity Loops. The interfaces are somewhat similar though - at least as far as beat construction goes.

Another idea, i've played on one, but don't like it.

If you want a steady beat to play to, the Digitek pedals have a built in drummer. They're nice, but not my thing.

Otherwise, I ... 4th?5th?6th the fruity loops recommendation. Great program.

music generator on playstation...still using this one after all these years...the only good product mtv has its name on (although they didn't have very much at all to do with making the actual program).

I'm going with Reason on this one. You can go listen to the reason drum samples on my songs that I posted on this forum.

Fruity Loops is sort of a techno program with crappy MIDI drum sounds. If you want to get a better quality for free, You may want to consider finding Drum Kit From Hell, and also getting Cubase to run DKFH in. If you don't really mind the relatively stark quality of Fruity Loops, then by all means, go for it. If you're planning on doing some higher-end recording, it would probably be worth your time to try and find both of those programs.

1st post, whoo.

So, you've never used Fruity Loops?

I was just messing with it right now, actually. Sorry for sounding so pompous. I was just trying to say that there are plenty of better drum programs out there. I'd say that Fruity Loops is probably the easiest to obtain, however.

Since Fruity Loops provides support for DX and VST instruments and effects, piano roll, and pattern and song-based editing, I'd say it's better than just about any other drum program. Nobody is forcing you to use the craptacular samples that come with Fruity Loops.

Upload something that you did on Fruity Loops. I'm interested in hearing some top end stuff from the program.

You can just use http://www.yousendit.com if you don't have a soundclick or something. Or just don't even bother uploading at all.

These aren't mine, but these represent some of the better examples of what you can do with Fruity Loops that I've heard: http://homerecording.com/bbs/showthread.php?t=141022

Well, if you got a recording program such as Cubase or others that can use VST instruments then IŽd suggest that you get:

Drumkit From Hell, any version will do.
and then you run it through a program called Battery.

Drumkit From Hell (the latest versions anyway), come with DXi, VSTi, RTAS, and standalone versions.
