I've got a nearly complete setup, but I'm using a shitty jury-rigged preamp I ripped out of my practice amp. I'm running it into a Crown XLR poweramp and then from there into a folded horn 1-15 cabinet.

And I'm wondering if any bassists here use a preamp-poweramp-cabinet setup, and if they do, what they would recommend using for a preamp.

Check out SWR's Interstellar Overdrive preamp

You could try an amp modeler - something like the bass version of the Pod.

I have actually, I like it, I like the flexibility, but I wanna keep my options open.

FYI I play everything from blues to metal, haven't experimented with a lot of effects, own a flange pedal I bought so I could play 46 and 2/screw around with.

Another little tidbit, that just got upgraded to two folded horns

If that's the case, then I think you'd be well served by something like the Pod Bass Pro. Just run that straight into your Crown and you should be set.
